Happy Monday

Greetings and happy Monday!

I hope you all had a restful weekend with your families.

Prior to the break we were working on the Deserted Island STEM Challenge and we missed the last one! Does Sir Harley Houndstooth III make it off the island? Gathering the materials that “Penguin Pete” aka your parents/guardians allow you to use, see if you can complete the last challenge!

The Story: (Read in your most dramatic voice possible)

Day 12: I am beginning to lose hope of ever getting home. At least if I am stuck here, I now have a safe shelter to sleep in, food to eat, and a way to fight off the pirates. I have done all of this with my bare hands and only the resources of this island! My family would be surprised and proud. Oh, my dear family. I miss them so! I am determined to find a way back. There is nothing left of the ship that brought me here; but perhaps I can build my own. Yes, a raft made of the very wood on this island will get me home!

For this challenge, you will plan, design, and build a raft with a mast that floats and holds weight.

You are suggested to use the following materials. Remember to try and not use too much of each supply – make it more challenging for yourself! If needed, I’m sure you can arrange for Penguin Pete to bring you more supplies! (Use whatever you have at your house! Preferably supplies that would otherwise be recycled or put in the garbage! Substitute for something similar if you don’t have one of the recommended supplies!)

  • foil
  • popsicle (craft) sticks
  • rubber bands
  • paper
  • cardboard
  • yarn or string
  • masking or duct tape
  • bottle caps
  • small Dixie cups
  • ruler
  • glue or hot glue
  • pennies for weights
  • tub of water to test in

Design Requirements: Completed rafts must have a mast and a base no larger than 400 square cm

Performance Requirements: To be considered successful, the raft must be able to float while holding at least one penny.

Test each raft by placing it in the tub of water. After demonstrating the ability to float, teams will place one penny on the raft, adding more slowly to see how many the raft can hold while staying afloat.

Don’t forget to follow our STEM Planning steps!

  1. Describe the problem. What do you want to happen?
  2. Brainstorm your ideas
  3. List the materials you will need
  4. Draw and label your designs
  5. Write down the steps to your plan
  6. Test your design. Describe how you tested it and what happened
  7. Record your results
    • How large is the base of your raft in square cm? (Remember we calculate area by multiplying the length X width)
    • Does the raft float?
    • How many pennies or coins did your raft hold before flipping or sinking?
  8. What worked and what would you differently next time?

Make sure you email me and let me know if you give the challenge a try and how it turned out for you!

Take care!

Ms. Yee

Fri-yay!

Hi Kiddos,

I was so excited and happy to hear so many of your voices yesterday!!! I miss you all so much! I look forward to speaking to those families I wasn’t able to connect with yesterday!

So many of you are continuing your learning at home which is fantastic. I’ve heard some of you have started new inquiry projects, some have been working on math and playing math games, some of been writing in journals, I even heard that someone has started their own book club with a friend from another city! Some of you have been going for hikes, playing games, and spending time with family, that’s wonderful too!! During this difficult time finding something to keep you occupied, happy, and connected is important. Keep up the awesome work Div. 5!

Today’s Boredom Busters…

  • Lately we’ve been hearing a lot about how to keep ourselves safe. Did you ever wonder how exactly does hand sanitizer work? You can check out this mystery science video and activity to find out. You can watch the video, check out the bacteria and virus images from the microscope and then design your own “little alien robot” germ. Give your little germ a name and you can write a story or a comic all about your germ!
  • You can try and play the following math games, you’ll need a deck of cards and for most of the games another human. 🙂
  • I’ve also heard that some of you have been practicing your French on Duolingo! Another great activity to help you continue your learning!
  • Don’t forget to keep reading!!! Have you checked out Tumblebooks or  Audible yet?

Take care and be safe!

<3,

Ms. Yee

Stay Motivated!

Hi Goobers,

I hope you’re staying safe and entertained, and not driving your families too crazy!! 🙂

  • Not in to dancing? Try some Yoga! You can click here, or you can click here for a Pokemon inspired yoga session.
  • Did you finish your perspective art yet? One point or 4 perspective? You can always try drawing the style you haven’t done yet!
  • You can also try one of these fun videos to create a folding surprise art piece. Click here for a folding surprise puppy stack, click here for folding surprise shark, click here for surprise poke ball
    • Or explore the YouTube videos on the side of those links for different folding surprise art pieces!
    • You can take pictures of your art and email them to me! I would love to see them
  • Yesterday was April Fool’s Day and I’m sure some of you goobers had plans of sneaky prankster tricks to pull on your lovely unsuspecting teacher or classmates. You can write about what hilarious (safe and kind) tricks you were planning to play.
    • You can also check out this Mystery Science Video all about April Fool’s Day by clicking here.
  • Don’t forget to read each day! 30 minutes is ideal! I’ve heard that some of you have been reading up a storm and that makes me SO happy! I finally finished the Unwanteds series, books 6 and 7. They were fantastic and I highly recommend checking them out if you haven’t already!
    • Don’t have anything left to read at home? Try Tumblebooks on the school’s library webpage!
    • Look under reading and writing, it’s the last bullet point.

Take care and be safe. Miss you all!!!

Hello Division 5!

Hi Division 5 Goobers and Families,

I hope you are doing well in this stressful and uncertain time. I miss you all very much and I know you’re missing my terrible jokes too. Myself and the other members of the UHE school community have been in constant contact (digitally of course) and we’re on our way to figure out what online learning will look like for you in these upcoming weeks. Until that is launched please see below for some activities you could be doing to help you continue your learning journey.

A great thing to start with is to think about what your daily routine or “Shape of the Day” will look like.

  • What time will you wake up each school day?
  • Can you choose a special “work space”?
  • Which activities will you do today?
  • Will you have access to technology (ipad or laptop) at a certain time during the day for school work?

Activities

Here are some activities you can choose to do today! These are just suggestions, not requirements. There are many ways we can learn at home!

  • Science
  • Math
    • Play some math games to practice your fluency of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts
    • Check out these math websites to help you practice your fluency!
  • Reading
    • Read a book! Or two! Email me what you’re reading and your thoughts so far!
    • Listen to a story from Audible (free collection available)
  • Writing
    • Create a visual journal about spring break – pictures and words about what you did
    • Write and draw about your favourite things about school! You can also include some things you would like to do during our distance learning!
  • Daily Physical Activity
    • Ideas: walking, hiking, yoga, dancing!
    • Remember to take lots of physical activity breaks throughout the day
  • Art
    • Spring is here! Find something to draw outside your window that shows spring is here!

Take care and be safe,

Ms. Yee  🙂

Mapping our stories and experiences across Canada

Hello Div 5,

Over the weekend you are asked to explore the stories and experiences you and your family have across Canada. On your map you can include any significant place that hold a story like:

  • Where you live now
  • Where you used to live (if this was in Canada)
  • Where you were born (if you were born in Canada)
  • Places you have visited
  • Places your family have visited
  • Places where other family or friends may live or have lived before
  • Places that are part of a journey (ex: the flight path of Ms. Yee’s Oma and Opa)

Feel free to include any other places in Canada that hold stories and significance to you and your family.

On the back of you map include a LEGEND that explain what the symbols/colours/dashes mean.

Please make sure you have the provinces and territories labelled and at least 3 places included on your map by Monday.

Happy mapping & have a wonderful weekend!!!

~Ms. Yee
