Tuesday April 14th

Good morning, Division 5,

I hope you had a lovely weekend with your families.

We are already in our third week back from spring break. Thank you for your bravery, patience, kindness, and love. Already, you have connected with your classroom, school, and neighbourhood communities in so many ways. Some days this is easy, but some days it is hard…but please know that we are in this together, and remember that your teachers, classmates and communities care about you very much.

Now, more than ever, we are exploring how we are all connected around the world.

Today, we are starting a new inquiry project. We will be extending our cultural inquiry project to explore different countries around the world! Over the coming weeks, we will be exploring culture and place through stories, art, languages, history, architecture, landscapes, animals, biomes, and much more!

Our first activity to start exploring is a National Geographic scavenger hunt of different countries around the world. Please go to your Microsoft Teams assignments to find the activity and links.

Additionally check out your grade specific math channel for an intro activity!

If you have any trouble finding these, or completing the activities, please let me know!

Happy Long Weekend

Howdy Div. 5,

Today, you will be either starting or continuing your Microsoft Teams scavenger hunt and first assignment! Please let me know if you need any support with this. Please continue to be good digital citizens online! 🙂

As we approach the long weekend, I want to thank you for all the images and messages of hope that you have shared with your class. I hope your family has a restful, relaxing time. These last few weeks have been a big adjustment and we will continue to figure this out together.  I hope you can connect with your family, friends and community in a safe way.

A few ideas for today and the long weekend:

  • You could do this Covid Time Capsule activity with your family – thank you, Emma and Tamara for sending this great idea!
  • Check out these music sites (thank you, Mr. Douglas!):
  • Today’s Mystery Science lesson is: Why do snakes shed their skin?
  • A weekly or daily gratitude journal
    • What are you grateful for? Who are you grateful for? While you are writing or drawing, notice how you feel.
  • Continue our kindness activities throughout the weekend to connect with family and community
  • If you haven’t completed the STEM challenge, that’s another great activity you could do! Here’s another example of a great build from a Div 5 student!
  • Multiplication Game
    • Split a deck of cards between two players (use cards A-10, but for a challenge you can use J [11], Q [12], and/or K [13 or some other value]).
    • Players do not look at their cards.
    • Each player draws their top card and slaps it down at the same time.
    • The player who says the product first wins that round and collects the cards – ex, Player A draws 5, and Player B draws 6. Player A says, “30,” first and collects both cards.
    • Whomever has the most cards at the end of the game, wins!

Make sure you check Teams on Tuesday for another assignment! 🙂

Happy Long Weekend!

2.       Find the Communication Channel

    • Post a comment on the Communication Channel answering the question– If you could turn into any animal which would you turn in to?
      • In the communication channel you’re able to chat with your teacher and peers. Make sure that what you’re posting is appropriate and kind!

3.       Find the Music Channel

    • Mr. Douglas would like to know if you have your recorder at home, if you left it at school, or if it is currently lost and you need to replace it or borrow from the school. (He will be arranging times for families to come in and pick up if left at school or if you need to borrow one)
    • Post your answer on the music channel
      • Example: Ms. Yee: I left my recorder at school, I will need to come and pick it up.

International Day of Pink and Teams Launch

Good morning Div 5.

Today is International Day of Pink! Who is wearing pink today (or your favourite colour)? Thanks for taking part in so many celebration activities! Can you choose another activity from yesterday’s list for this morning?

Did anyone else see the full moon last night? It was also a Super Moon! It is pretty neat to think about how we can all look at the moon from all the different places we live. Does it remind you of the stories and science experiments we did to understand how the moon phases change in Term 1?

As you keep creating and exploring, here is another Mystery Science: How are Toys Invented?  Like the inventor in this mystery, what is a time you thought, “what is a new thing I could do from what I learned”?

This afternoon…

This afternoon, you will be receiving access to your Microsoft Teams account. It is very important to remember the expectations of being a digital citizen. Please make sure that what you are posting is appropriate and kind. Thank you in advance for being your kind, thoughtful selves online.

**Before exploring Teams please watch this video that explains how to log on to Teams and use some of its features.**

Your first challenge will be a scavenger hunt of the Teams platform! You can start the scavenger hunt this afternoon or tomorrow! Stay tuned for an email coming this afternoon with more details.

Spreading Kindness

Good morning, Division 4 and 5,

This is certainly an interesting time in our world. Although it can sometimes feel like we are far away from our family and friends, in some ways it can also bring us closer together! We might be making more time to call or send letters to loved ones. We have been spending time with our immediate families – creating, sharing, and learning together. Everyone is working together to keep our community safe and healthy.

With perfect timing, tomorrow is International Day of Pink. This day is about celebrating the diversity in our community and standing up against discrimination. Kindness and support are exactly what we all need right now. Usually, Div. 4 and 5 students come together to create and collaborate, but this year will be a little different.

Today, we want you to think about how you can spread kindness and appreciation in your community in this unique situation. We would like everyone to share a message with their community to show we are all connected, even from afar.

Choose one or more activities for celebrating our community:

  • Create a window sign of encouragement, support, or gratitude for our essential services workers and/or our community.
  • Take part in the 7pm cheer for health care workers
  • Create a sign of support for a local business and email it to Ms. Carley, Ms. Yee, and/or Mr. Harding to print and deliver – how can we stay connected to our local businesses?
  • Write a letter to a family member
  • Call a friend or family member
  • Create a message to share on the blog
  • Can you play an online game with a friend?
  • Wear pink on Wednesday!
  • Come up with another way to encourage your community. How can we celebrate diversity from a far?

Best of luck spreading kindness today and tomorrow as we celebrate International Day of Pink from home. Send me photos of your signs and messages so I can post them on the blog to encourage our community!

At 10am today, Doug will be doing a live stream of his Mystery Science show. Feel free to tune in with your families and friends!

Happy Monday

Greetings and happy Monday!

I hope you all had a restful weekend with your families.

Prior to the break we were working on the Deserted Island STEM Challenge and we missed the last one! Does Sir Harley Houndstooth III make it off the island? Gathering the materials that “Penguin Pete” aka your parents/guardians allow you to use, see if you can complete the last challenge!

The Story: (Read in your most dramatic voice possible)

Day 12: I am beginning to lose hope of ever getting home. At least if I am stuck here, I now have a safe shelter to sleep in, food to eat, and a way to fight off the pirates. I have done all of this with my bare hands and only the resources of this island! My family would be surprised and proud. Oh, my dear family. I miss them so! I am determined to find a way back. There is nothing left of the ship that brought me here; but perhaps I can build my own. Yes, a raft made of the very wood on this island will get me home!

For this challenge, you will plan, design, and build a raft with a mast that floats and holds weight.

You are suggested to use the following materials. Remember to try and not use too much of each supply – make it more challenging for yourself! If needed, I’m sure you can arrange for Penguin Pete to bring you more supplies! (Use whatever you have at your house! Preferably supplies that would otherwise be recycled or put in the garbage! Substitute for something similar if you don’t have one of the recommended supplies!)

  • foil
  • popsicle (craft) sticks
  • rubber bands
  • paper
  • cardboard
  • yarn or string
  • masking or duct tape
  • bottle caps
  • small Dixie cups
  • ruler
  • glue or hot glue
  • pennies for weights
  • tub of water to test in

Design Requirements: Completed rafts must have a mast and a base no larger than 400 square cm

Performance Requirements: To be considered successful, the raft must be able to float while holding at least one penny.

Test each raft by placing it in the tub of water. After demonstrating the ability to float, teams will place one penny on the raft, adding more slowly to see how many the raft can hold while staying afloat.

Don’t forget to follow our STEM Planning steps!

  1. Describe the problem. What do you want to happen?
  2. Brainstorm your ideas
  3. List the materials you will need
  4. Draw and label your designs
  5. Write down the steps to your plan
  6. Test your design. Describe how you tested it and what happened
  7. Record your results
    • How large is the base of your raft in square cm? (Remember we calculate area by multiplying the length X width)
    • Does the raft float?
    • How many pennies or coins did your raft hold before flipping or sinking?
  8. What worked and what would you differently next time?

Make sure you email me and let me know if you give the challenge a try and how it turned out for you!

Take care!

<3,

Ms. Yee

Fri-yay!

Hi Kiddos,

I was so excited and happy to hear so many of your voices yesterday!!! I miss you all so much! I look forward to speaking to those families I wasn’t able to connect with yesterday!

So many of you are continuing your learning at home which is fantastic. I’ve heard some of you have started new inquiry projects, some have been working on math and playing math games, some of been writing in journals, I even heard that someone has started their own book club with a friend from another city! Some of you have been going for hikes, playing games, and spending time with family, that’s wonderful too!! During this difficult time finding something to keep you occupied, happy, and connected is important. Keep up the awesome work Div. 5!

Today’s Boredom Busters…

  • Lately we’ve been hearing a lot about how to keep ourselves safe. Did you ever wonder how exactly does hand sanitizer work? You can check out this mystery science video and activity to find out. You can watch the video, check out the bacteria and virus images from the microscope and then design your own “little alien robot” germ. Give your little germ a name and you can write a story or a comic all about your germ!
  • You can try and play the following math games, you’ll need a deck of cards and for most of the games another human. 🙂
  • I’ve also heard that some of you have been practicing your French on Duolingo! Another great activity to help you continue your learning!
  • Don’t forget to keep reading!!! Have you checked out Tumblebooks or  Audible yet?

Take care and be safe!

<3,

Ms. Yee

    • You can also check out this Mystery Science Video all about April Fool’s Day by clicking here.
  • Don’t forget to read each day! 30 minutes is ideal! I’ve heard that some of you have been reading up a storm and that makes me SO happy! I finally finished the Unwanteds series, books 6 and 7. They were fantastic and I highly recommend checking them out if you haven’t already!
    • Don’t have anything left to read at home? Try Tumblebooks on the school’s library webpage!
    • Look under reading and writing, it’s the last bullet point.

Take care and be safe. Miss you all!!!

Ms. Yee

Hello Division 5!

Hi Division 5 Goobers and Families,

I hope you are doing well in this stressful and uncertain time. I miss you all very much and I know you’re missing my terrible jokes too. Myself and the other members of the UHE school community have been in constant contact (digitally of course) and we’re on our way to figure out what online learning will look like for you in these upcoming weeks. Until that is launched please see below for some activities you could be doing to help you continue your learning journey.

A great thing to start with is to think about what your daily routine or “Shape of the Day” will look like.

  • What time will you wake up each school day?
  • Can you choose a special “work space”?
  • Which activities will you do today?
  • Will you have access to technology (ipad or laptop) at a certain time during the day for school work?

Activities

Here are some activities you can choose to do today! These are just suggestions, not requirements. There are many ways we can learn at home!

  • Science
  • Math
    • Play some math games to practice your fluency of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts
    • Check out these math websites to help you practice your fluency!
  • Reading
    • Read a book! Or two! Email me what you’re reading and your thoughts so far!
    • Listen to a story from Audible (free collection available)
  • Writing
    • Create a visual journal about spring break – pictures and words about what you did
    • Write and draw about your favourite things about school! You can also include some things you would like to do during our distance learning!
  • Daily Physical Activity
    • Ideas: walking, hiking, yoga, dancing!
    • Remember to take lots of physical activity breaks throughout the day
  • Art
    • Spring is here! Find something to draw outside your window that shows spring is here!

Take care and be safe,

Ms. Yee  🙂
