Ms. Yap’s City of Burnaby Project 2018<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>The students in Ms. Yap’s class have been exploring and learning about landmarks. We first started globally and explored the landmarks in the world that were either special to us, or rooted in\u00a0our thoughts. We then took a look at landmarks within our community and explored why those landmarks are important to us and the people in Burnaby.<\/p>\n

We began to compose soundscapes for our\u00a0landmarks, which expands on the work of Murray Schaffer. Our collection of soundscapes can be seen as ‘sonic events’ or ‘sonic compositions’ that bring to life the different ways in which the children in Ms. Yap’s class perceive and understand their selected global and local landmarks.<\/p>\n

Division 11 Multicultural Song Exchange with Student’s in Greece 2018.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This year students in Ms. Walji\/Ms. Basso’s class are partaking in a cultural song exchange with elementary school students in Greece. Division 11 will be sharing and teaching those students a traditional Canadian Folk Song, and will be taught a traditional Greek Song from the students in Greece.\u00a0 To access the posts about our exchange please click here.<\/a><\/p>\n

Winter musical Reflections:
\n\"img_8977\"<\/strong>Synopsis: \u00a0This year\u2019s winter musical was written and arranged by\u00a0Mr. \"img_8985\"Yanko & Mr. Turpin. Set in a world with eight kingdoms trying to rule the winter, we take you on a magical journey to discover who comes out on top to rule the icy throne. This story unfolds as the actors and classes reveal how they survive the never ending chilly season. Come and join us as we take you on an adventure through the essence of the holiday spirit, but be warned, \u201cWinter is coming!\u201d<\/p>\n

Yap (grade 2) Concert reflection<\/strong><\/p>\n

Who was scared last year, but not this year while performing?<\/em>\"img_9001\"<\/strong>
\n2 kids raise their hands and answer:
\n\u201cI was last year but this year I was brave.\u201d
\n\u201cI wasn\u2019t scare, I don\u2019t know. Maybe it was an easier song.\u201d
\nAnother student cuts in, \u201cShe\u2019s just tougher I guess.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0What is the difference between singing on stage and in class?<\/em>
\n<\/strong>Various kids reply:
\n\u201cYou\u2019re not singing with us Mr. Yanko.\u201d
\n\u201cNo ones watching us in class.\u201d
\n\u201cThere\u2019s no words on the stage for us to read.\u201d
\n“The song has to be memorized.\u201d
\n\u201cWe\u2019re not wearing costumes in class.\u201d
\n\u201cWe sing louder on the stage.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0Things we liked about the concert this year:\"img_8968\"<\/em>
\n<\/strong>Various students reply:
\n\u201cI like singing on stage.\u201d
\n\u201cI like the disco elves.\u201d
\n\u201cI like the finale song, cuz its fun to sing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0What were some things that were challenging?<\/em>
\n<\/strong>One boy answers, \u201cI couldn\u2019t do actions during the finale because I was squished on the stage, but I still singed.\u201d
\nAnother boy answers, \u201cA kid was distracting me in the middle of the performance by acting silly with the actions and was hitting me with her arms.\u201d\"concert-6\"<\/p>\n

\n<\/strong>\u201cNo one looked at the choir.\u201d
\n\u201cWe all used our loud singing voices.\u201d
\n\u201cI smiled when I was dancing.\u201d
\n\u201cWe gotta sing louder and with a clear voice.\u201d<\/p>\n

What have we learned from our performance this year to make next year even better?<\/em>
\n<\/strong>\u201cNext year will be easier because when you\u2019re older you get smarter.\u201d
\n\u201cMaybe we can sing other songs and get better and better at singing. With more songs to learn they will adore us.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n<\/strong>\u201cWe learned to not look at the choir.\u201d
\n\u201cWe learned how to sing loud.\u201d
\n\u201cWe learned how to get on and off the stage.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n<\/strong>After watching a video of us performing at the dress rehearsal we all shared ideas of how to make our performance better.<\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe we can do better, sometimes I stare at the choir. Today I can try looking at the audience and not the choir.\u201d
\n\u201cMaybe we can sing louder than we ever singed before.\u201d\"concert-1\"<\/p>\n

Mr. Yanko asks, \u201cIs louder singing, speaking, or shouting?\u201d
\nA student replies, \u201cSinging,\u201d and the class starts singing their song.
\n\u201cWe can do better actions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr. Yanko asks, \u201cHow can we do it better?\u201d
\nA student replies, \u201cby concentrating and better.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr. Yanko asks, \u201cAre we all doing the actions at the same time?”
\nMany children reply, \u201cYes!\u201d<\/p>\n

\nVarious students answer, \u201cBetter, higher, clearer.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think we should look at the audience and not each other.\u201d
\n\u201cWe should put our hats on before we go on the stage because some students make too much noise putting them on on the stage.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we do the actions we need to put more energy into them.\u201d \u2013 This is followed by a class discussion on the actions and how to make them better.\"img_8958\"<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to be more energetic with moves because we look tired.\u201d
\n\u201cWe need to fix our chair move because the chair we point at isn\u2019t where we are pointing.\u201d
\n\u201cI think we need more bounce and energy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Davis (grade 5\/6) Class reflection on concert
\n<\/strong>Mr. Yanko asks, \u201chow did we feel about our signing volume on the stage, since singing loud was an issue in the dress rehearsals?\u201d
\n\u201cI think we did well. Most of us were singing loud.\u201d
\n\u201cSome students were mumbling a bit at the beginning, but then it got better.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr. Yanko and the class have a discussion on some of the things students enjoyed about the concert.
\n\u201cI liked the old school music.\u201d
\n\u201cI like the tree and elf songs because I like their singing and my sister is in the tree class.\u201d\"cocnert-3\"<\/p>\n

Many students responded that they liked the elf song.
\n\u201cBecause it was funny.\u201d
\n\u201cBecause the costumes were silly.\u201d
\n\u201cTheir song was great.\u201d
\n\u201cTheir performance was hilarious.\u201d
\n\u201cI like the trees because they make great back scratchers for us bears.\u201d<\/p>\n

Some students discuss ideas for next year:<\/em>
\n\u201cIf were bears again, I think we should be fat bears and not skinny ones.\u201d
\n\u201cA different theme next year.\u201d

\n\u201cLouder. Some people weren\u2019t wearing black like they were supposed to. Our actions are good.\u201d
\n\u201cMr. Yanko should choose people to go down because we don\u2019t know who is going down to sleep.\u201d
\n\u201cWe need to sing louder and better movements. Some people aren\u2019t seen in the back.\u201d
\n\u201cMaybe the taller people stand at the back and the smaller people stand at the front. We need to sing louder and keep up with the music. More detail on the costumes.\u201d\"img_8929\"

\n\u201cA little louder. People learn the actions a little more. We need to sing more. Some people were kicking people while singing.\u201d

\n\u201cDon\u2019t look behind you and goof around.\u201d
\n\u201cChoose people to go down. Do more actions. Don\u2019t just fall down when going to sleep.\u201d
\n\u201cI see taller people in the front. To look at the audience more. To not look at the choir too much. I see that we are too quiet and change it to be louder and more clear.\u201d\"img_8995\"
\n\u201cOur voice needs to be clearer and louder. Mr. Yanko should choose people to fall down.\u201d
\n\u201cTo not kick someone when they are sleeping. Sing more.\u201d
\n\u201cSpeak louder and choose people to fall down.\u201d
\n\u201cLess people to go down and should go down slower. We need to speak louder and in sync.\u201d
\n\u201cCostumes should have more details. We need to sing louder and clearer.\u201d
\n\u201cWe aren\u2019t doing the right actions sometimes together. Sometimes we are very quiet. Mr. Yanko should choose people to go to sleep. We need more details in our costumes.\u201d\"img_8955\"
\n\u201cMaybe we could improve on not goofing around and move more slowly.\u201d
\n\u201cWe could try to improve on singing louder on some parts of the song.”
\n\u201cWe should try to get the actions right. We should not be goofy on the stage. We need to be a little louder. People shouldn\u2019t kick others when they are sleeping.\u201d<\/p>\n
