Tin Foil Boat Experiment

Objective: How many marbles can my tin foil boat hold before sinking?

Materials:
marbles
water
large bucket
aluminum (tin) foil

Procedure:

First, make a tin foil boat using tin foil (no scissors or glue allowed).

Next, put boat in water and add marbles one at a time until boat sinks.

We recorded our results on our poster to hang in our classroom.

Here are some results:

Boats of various shapes and sizes held different marbles.
Rocco’s boat held 65 marbles before sinking.
Other boats held 2-64 marbles.

Thoughts to ponder….

What could you do differently next time so that your boat can hold more marbles?
Why did some boats hold less than 10 marbles while other boats held more than 30?
Does the shape of the boat affect how many marbles it can hold?
What if I put something different inside the boat (instead of marbles)?

You could try this challenge at home…. =)
