Ms. Lee helped us learn about the difference between formal and informal writing. We might use formal writing when submitting an essay, sending an e-mail to an employer, or writing a letter to a government official. Informal writing is what we use when we text a friend, when we write in a journal, or if we are writing a quick write.<\/p>\n<p>Based on these conversations, we created a checklist that will help us with our editing! Find our checklist below:<\/p>\n<p><b><i>Self-Editing Checklist:\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using the checklist below, read through your paper fully. You can make any corrections using a pen. Check off the list as you go.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Formatting:\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-checked=\"false\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Is there a title? Is it bolded? Centered?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-checked=\"false\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is your name underneath (By: Your Name)?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-checked=\"false\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is your paragraph indented using the TAB?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-checked=\"false\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is the font easy to read (ex: Arial, Times New Roman)?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-checked=\"false\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Did you use size 12-14 font?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-checked=\"false\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is your work double-spaced?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Content:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-checked=\"false\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Did you use a catchy or interesting opening sentence?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-checked=\"false\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Did you clearly introduce your topic\/thesis?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-checked=\"false\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Did you use at least 3 reasons or pieces of evidence?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-checked=\"false\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Did you use a conclusion sentence and have a strong ending?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-checked=\"false\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Were you persuasive?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Grammar and Formality:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-checked=\"false\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Is the beginning of each sentence capitalized?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-checked=\"false\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are names of people and places capitalized (ex: Wirt, Pottsfield)?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-checked=\"false\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is there a period, question mark, or exclamation mark at the end of each sentence?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-checked=\"false\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Did you check for slang (ex: cool, yeah) and remove it?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-checked=\"false\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Did you remove contractions (ex: don\u2019t, won\u2019t)?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-checked=\"false\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Did you remove short forms (ex, ur, irl)?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-checked=\"false\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Did you rephrase your sentences to remove \u201cI\u201d and \u201cwe\u201d? <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Our class has been working on using self-editing strategies in order to make our writing more powerful, formal, and clear!
