This Week’s Activities – Shape poems and double digit subtraction

| Posted in Uncategorized

Hello all,

I hope everyone has had a fun weekend. It was so nice to learn more about amphibians and reptiles on Friday last week, I did not know many of those facts myself! I hope you have fun with this week’s learning activities 🙂 If you have any questions, comments or concerns feel free to reach out. For this week’s Zoom meeting, on Wednesday June 10th at 10:00 am, we will be doing a guided drawing so if you are able to come, please be prepared with paper and drawing pencils. Thank you.

June 8th – 12th

Core Activities :

  • Read 20 minutes daily – just as we would have every day in our classroom for Daily 5
  • Read the assigned book in your Epic profile, and please try to answer the questions about that book. This will help me check everyone’s understanding of the stories they read – just like we do during Daily 5 in school when you ‘Read with Teacher’
  • Journals: This week, I encourage students to watch this CBC Kids News question and answer segment. https://www.cbc.ca/kidsnews/post/watch-is-it-safe-to-go-swimming-during-covid-19-coronavirus-pools-lakes The question is posed by an 11 year old kid from Halifax, Nova Scotia on the other side of Canada. He asks if it will be safe to swim during the Coronavirus outbreak. Check out the video. In your journals this week, I would like students to write about something they are hoping to be able to do this summer outside of their homes, if restrictions continue to be lifted. What is everyone looking forward to? Here is an example I did in my journal to show everyone:

You may consider beginning your writing with the sentence starter “This summer, I would like to …” Please remember to use appropriate punctuation, periods, capitals, and challenge yourself to explain your ideas with the word ‘because’ – this is what great writers do! 🙂

  • Do the assigned activity on your Zorbit account
  • Math: This week we will practice something double digit subtraction WITHOUT borrowing. This means that even though the numbers may look big, you are really still practicing the same subtraction that you became masters of last week. In double digit subtraction we will take two numbers that have 2 digits (such as 99, or 17, or 45) and subtract one from the other! Here are a couple charts I made to show you what I mean:

This week, I would like to see all students try these math questions:

Supplementary Activities :

  • This week’s class Zoom meeting will be on Wednesday, June 10th at 10:00am. This week we will try to do a guided drawing together, so bring some paper and drawing pencils if you can join us 🙂
  • Poetry: If you have time, this week I am encouraging students to try creating a ‘Shape Poem.’ It is very easy to do – you pick an animal, person, or object to be your topic. Then you write a few lines about this animal, person or object. But! You must write the lines in the exact shape of that animal, person or object. I know it sounds tricky, but I know our class can do this 🙂 Here is an example of a ‘Snake Shape Poem’ I made to show everyone:

The ‘Shape Poem’ says: “A slipper snake slithers slowly across sand. It smells with it’s tongue and scares many, but really just wants to be left alone.”

There are lots of great examples on the internet as well to help you get started, people have used all sorts of shapes such as kites, hands, birds, trees, and even people! This website shows some great examples done by kids that might be a few grades older http://www.shadowpoetry.com/resources/wip/shape.html

  • Art: This week I am challenging you to make a ‘Mystery Portrait.’ Some of you may have tried this once in our classroom for fun before, but if you haven’t I encourage you to try this with a family member – the results are always a silly mystery! Here’s what to do: Take a blank paper and a pencil or marker. Try to draw a family member, yourself in front of a mirror, or even a stuffie without looking down at your page, and without ever lifting your pencil or marker from the page! Those are the two main challenges. The pictures will always turn out like a silly mystery. Here, I tried to draw my father from a photograph I have of him:

Looks pretty silly right? Here, I tried to draw myself!

To make the picture even sillier I coloured in all the different spaces with different colours. What will yours look like?

As always, I would love to see your learning! Please upload to FreshGrade anything you feel comfortable with 🙂
