This Week’s Activities – Core Competencies and Addition with regrouping

| Posted in Uncategorized

Hello families of Div. 18,

I hope everyone has had a relaxing long weekend. I look forward to the activities that this week will bring! This week’s journal writing activity is especially important. Every term, students have completed a self-assessment in class. This self assessment is included in your child’s report card. For this third term, I will need students to complete this journal entry to reflect on their growth and goals throughout this school year. The topic focuses on personal and social responsibility – which all of us have been greatly involved in by caring for our community and staying home. If there is any more support or  direction I can give to help students complete this please do not hesitate to contact me. I look forward to seeing everyone at our class Zoom on Wednesday! 🙂

May 19th – 22nd

Core Activities :

  • Read 20 minutes daily – just as we would have every day in our classroom for Daily 5
  • Read the assigned book in your Epic profile, and please try to answer the questions about that book. This will help me check everyone’s understanding of the stories they read – just like we do during Daily 5 in school when you ‘Read with Teacher’
  • Journals:The ‘Core Competencies’ are overarching themes that we teach throughout the school year across all subjects. They focus on communication, critical and creative thinking, as well as personal and social responsibility. These themes help guide our students into becoming respectful and responsible individuals. More information can be found at https://curriculum.gov.bc.ca/competencies  Each term we have focused on a Core Competency (such as a focus on communication – written, verbal and body language, as well as creative and critical thinking – through building and group challenges). Students have also completed and sent home a self-assessment with each report card. Students have chosen how they believe they are doing in various tasks. For the third term of school, students must complete one more self-assessment, which will focus on personal and social responsibility. Students, this week in your journal I encourage you to think about how you have taken care of yourself or others this school year. Did you remember to take a walk, do 5 finger breathing, take a break or drink of water when you need to return to the Green Zone? Did you ask for a hug from a friend or trusted adult? Did you read a book that you enjoy, draw a picture or write about something to make yourself feel calm and ready to learn? Did you invite a friend to play, or try to cheer up a classmate you noticed maybe was having a bad day? Did you bang pots to thank doctors, nurses and essential service workers for helping care for us all? Did you check in with family members to see how they are doing?

Please include:

  1. At least one example of something you have done for your personal and social well – being this school year (it is appropriate to write about something you have done at home to make yourself or others feel happy during social distancing). You can use the writing prompt “This school year I … “
  2. Something that you would really like to work on and get better at in the next school year. You can use the writing prompt “Next year I want to … “

Here is an example I have done :

Please remember to use full sentences.

  • Do the assigned activity on your Zorbit account
  • Math Challenge: This week we will be learning about double digit addition WITH Regrouping. I have posted a video of myself explaining the idea of double digit addition with regrouping on your child’s Freshgrade account. Give it a look when you have time. Here are two charts I have made to help explain double digit addition as well:

Here are some videos that may help with additional explanations of double digit addition with regrouping:

Your math activity for this week will be to complete these questions on a separate paper :

If you would like to do even more, I invite you to show me your work on one of these questions in either standard form, expanded form, base ten form, or on a number line like the examples above. Just like last week, this will help you to continue to practice double digit addition. Try creating base ten groups with items and counters you have around your house such as marbles, coins, beans or paper clips.

Supplementary Activities :

  • This week’s class Zoom meeting is on Wednesday May 20th at 10:00am – join if you can. The link will be posted on FreshGrade to remain private to only Div. 18. This week, we will be going on a virtual field trip! We will be attending a session led by Gary R. Allen and his wolf named Tundra. He runs the Tundra Speaks program outside of Nanaimo on Vancouver Island. There he educates students, schools and visitors all about wolves, their conservation needs, and the importance of wolves in First Nations culture. Mr. Allen has requested that for this session, all mics are muted and questions are saved for the end. More information can be found at https://tundraspeaks.com/school-and-community-events/ . For this Zoom, Ms. Allen has requested that all students keep their mics muted. He will happily answer any questions at the end – you may record them on the ‘chat’ feature of Zoom. Parents are invited to attend if they would like, and families – feel free to leave your cameras off as well if you would prefer.
  • If you have time, I encourage you to try this art project – A self portrait is a picture the artist does of themselves. I am challenging you to include not only a picture of yourselves, but also of what you might be thinking about. I did an example to show everyone, and in mine I am thinking about the things that make me happy (such as mountains, sunshine, my dog, books and ice cream).    What will you think about in your self portrait?
  • National Geographic has created this resource where we can use our computers to travel to Son Doong cave in Vietnam. It is the world’s largest cave, and we are so lucky we can explore inside of it – while staying in our houses! Give it a look, and if you have time consider trying to make a map of where you have explored inside the cave. • Our music teacher Ms. Hintersteininger has selected a new song for students to learn throughout this term. More information is available at her class blog https://sd41blogs.ca/hintersteiningerk/ – The song is titled ‘A Million Dreams’ – You might give it a listen, and see if you can start learning to sing along.

As always, please do what is right for your family at this time. I am happy to help in any way that I can. Please upload your journal works to FreshGrade, and any other tasks you complete if you would like to – I love seeing what everyone is up to!

Thank you,

Ms. Vlasic
