This Week’s Activities – Descriptive Writing

| Posted in Uncategorized

Hello Everyone,

Hope you have had a great weekend. We had some crazy weather yesterday – did anyone else get caught in that hail storm? I was enjoying a walk around Burnaby Lake until the hail began and my shoes got soaked!

I would like to welcome our new student Ryan to our class this week – he will be joining us in Div. 18 and can’t wait to meet you all 🙂

This week’s writing activities will focus on using descriptive words. We have practiced this quite a bit in our classroom, especially with Ms. Schmidt. When writing, remember to use describing words that will help paint a picture for your reader to see. Use adjectives and action words to explain what you are writing about. I hope you have fun with this week’s activities.

May 4th – 8th

Core Activities :

  • Read 20 minutes daily – just as we would have every day in our classroom for Daily 5
  • Read the assigned book in your Epic profile, and please try to answer the questions about that book. This will help me check everyone’s understanding of the stories they read – just like we do during Daily 5 in school when you ‘Read with Teacher’
  • Journal writing: Choose an object or thing. Your challenge this week is to write about this object without naming it , so the reader has to guess what your object is – king of like how we give hints to each other when we play ‘Headbanz.’ We have done a lot of learning about and practicing using describing words to make our writing great, so please use those ‘triple scoop and juicy’ words to explain what your object is.

Here is my example:     Can you guess what I am writing about?  Do not worry about drawing a picture for this week, as you will want to keep your object a secret for the reader to guess. Try it out on members of your family to see if they know what you are writing about.

  • Do the assigned activity on your Zorbit account.
  • Math Challenge:
    • Challenge #1 -Write the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 in the circles so that each line has the same total.
    • Challenge #2 – Write the numbers 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 8 in the correct place so that each side of the square adds up to 12.

Here is a clue to get started:

I would expect Gr. 1’s to try Challenge #1, and Gr. 2’s to try both if they have time.

Supplementary Activities :

  • This week’s class Zoom meeting is on Wednesday May 6th at 10:00am – join if you can. The link will be posted on FreshGrade to remain private to only Div. 18. This week, Gr. 2’s are invited to ‘Show and Tell’ one item. Each student will have a few minutes to share and answer questions.
  • Poetry :
    • An acrostic poem is a very fun poem for kids.  Each acrostic poem has a topic idea or word running down the left side of the poem. Each letter in the topic word has a new thought that runs off the side from left to right and is relevant to the topic word.  The topic word is typically the title as well. If you have time, I would love to see you try to make an acrostic poem out of your name. Write your name along the left side of a page, and then choose a word to describe yourself for each of those letters! I know this may sound confusing, so I made an example out of my name :
    •       If you find that making your poem a sentence is hard, try just writing a describing word for each letter of your name – I can’t wait to see what you come up with!
  • I have uploaded a video of myself reading a story for Div. 18 on FreshGrade 🙂 Give it a listen – If you are comfortable, try recording yourself reading out loud too, and post it on FreshGrade. A whole story or even a page, I’d love to hear you read!
  • Last week we learned about ‘Forces and Motion.’ One of the forces we discussed was Gravity – the force that pulls objects down to the Earth. Did you know that gravity is different in space? Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield made a few videos about this when he was on the Canadian Space Station. Check them out if you have time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZx0RIV0wss&list=RDCMUCdNtqpHlU1pCaVy2wlzxHKQ&start_radio=1&t=20
  • If you have time, I encourage you to try to do an outdoor scavenger hunt. This helps us notice more about the nature all around us, even when we are going on a walk through our neighbourhood. Here is an example of some things you could look for:

Please upload one or more of these activities to your FreshGrade account when you have time. As always, do what works best for your family, and please reach out if there is anything I can do to support or help.

Thanks,

Ms. Vlasic
