GROUP A

Week of June 15th- June 20th

Hi Group A,

To wrap up this year, I would like you to use mindmap strategy to write a paragraph on things you are grateful for. Here is a mindmap I made showing things I am grateful for(sorry, I am not sure how to make it less blurry).

Use mindmaps to brainstorm ideas, but remember if an idea should branch out of one of the “sideboxes”, be sure to reorganize it. For example, Ms. Tong can have ideas such as “Many people have lost their jobs”, “Pilots and airport staff have been fired because no one is traveling during Covid” stemming from the bubble “Having a job and great coworkers who make me laugh”. In my final paragraph, I should try to come up with 3 ideas from one of these bubbles, and focus on writing about ONE THING I am grateful for. Your writing will always be more effective if your paragraph focuses on one thing.

I thought this would be a good wrap up for the year to remember things we can be grateful for during this challenging year. It has been a pleasure to teach you all this year and I will miss you!

Take care and see you in September 🙂

Week of May 25th- May 29th

Hi Group A,

Please go to the main page and read about the important announcement for ELL year-end assessments.

Learning goal:

Writing multiple paragraphs using mindmaps

This week, you will use the strategy of mindmaps to generate information on the topic “my hometown” or “my favorite holiday destination”. Then, you will pick “two pathways” from your mindmap and write two paragraphs. For information on what I mean by “two pathways”, watch the short video I created below to review concepts:

Week of  May 19th- May 22nd

Hello group A,

As the weeks progressed, the amount of work I’ve been able to receive back has significantly decreased. To not add stress to families, I’ve included an optional activity for students who were able to hand in previous assignments. Building on what we learned, I’d like you to write a paragraph on a new topic: What are some things we can do to keep schools safe when we return to school?

Here are some ideas from other schools: Watch the video only until the 2-minute mark!

Here’s what you  need to do:

  1. Try not to research- this is meant for you to practice your paragraph structure and not your research skills
  2. Use mindmap- refer to previous videos on how to do a mindmap to brainstorm information
  3. Topic- What are some strategies to keep a school safe for kids and teachers returning back to school? Think of 1 strategy and explain how to implement it in your paragraph.
  4. Remember to have all four components: 1. topic sentence 2. details 3. conclusion – the so what?
  5. Hand in both your mindmap (I want to see how you freely brainstormed ideas) and your finished paragraph

For kids who will submit your work, I will be providing personal feedback in helping you to improve your paragraph structure. See you all next week!

Week of May 4th- May 15th

Hello group A,

I previously updated my blog last week but I am unsure why it’s not here! In my last post, I mentioned that there were some revisions needed for the received paragraph assignment. I’ve updated a video discussing common errors and what you need to do for the next assignment. Unfortunately, many of you are not up to date with the assignments, so until I’ve been able to reach most of you to understand why I may slow down with the new updates. If you have trouble accessing the newly assigned work, please look for the “subscribe” tab and input your e-mail to receive real-time updates.

IMPORTANT: I’ve  had issues with uploading to Youtube as it says the video is too long, if an error shows up when you are trying to watch the video, please access the video from this Onedrive link: https://sd41-my.sharepoint.com/:v:/g/personal/e18912_burnabyschools_ca/EXqnkOOuRNlKqI3dPVr_CL0Bj-a_5kgGk21CndJ_enhjQQ?e=Qz0xTq

Here is the video for the next week:

Week of April 27-May 1st

Good morning group A,

New vocabulary:
intentional- on purpose; or thought out before you make an action (see link: https://www.vocabulary.com/dictionary/intentional)
effectively- get the job done better (For example, I completed my homework and cleaned the house slowly versus I completed my homework and cleaned the house effectively. In the second example, you were probably faster to complete your tasks and multi-tasking!)

Learning Goal:

Most of you have not yet handed in your assignments, but I am going to go ahead with this next exercise. This next exercise we will be discussing the “HOW TO” create a paragraph. I know what you are thinking- “Ms. Tong, we already know how to write a paragraph”. No-sorry, great paragraphs that communicate clearly are well-thought-out and takes intentional planning, which means it’s not something you write out without thinking and planning ahead of time. Let me show you about a planning process that can keep you writing on-topic and help you write effectively.

Let’s explore “mindmaps” in my video: https://sd41-my.sharepoint.com/:p:/g/personal/e18912_burnabyschools_ca/ESYO60xh2otDtGyfvEUL3FkBKNQ4jhMOPImY9meBeQA1WQ?e=rDCzfs

This week there will be no assignments. However, please be sure to watch my video as next week’s assignment will build off of it. See you next week 🙂

Weeks of April 14th-28th

Hi group A,

For these two weeks, please watch the video below:

Assignment:

Step 1: Complete the following topic sentence:  “In the past two weeks, I have been feeling…”

Step 2: Then, draw a hamburger and write all 3 parts of your paragraph within the paragraph. Here is an example of how your finished assignment should look:

Step 3: Take your hamburger draft and write a complete paragraph. You will submit your complete paragraph by the method described under the “submit assignments” tab.
