{"id":826,"date":"2013-01-08T21:28:19","date_gmt":"2013-01-09T05:28:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/temples\/?p=826"},"modified":"2013-01-08T21:28:19","modified_gmt":"2013-01-09T05:28:19","slug":"happy-new-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/temples\/2013\/01\/08\/happy-new-year\/","title":{"rendered":"Happy New Year!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome back to a new &#8216;calendar&#8217; year in the midst of our current &#8216;school&#8217; year.\u00a0 We have six short months\u00a0remaining\u00a0together and a lot of great learning left to do.<\/p>\n<p>We are currently exploring the sport of hockey &#8211; the floor variety.\u00a0 Students are learning correct hand positions on the sticks and the fundamentals of the game.\u00a0 A huge focus of ours is in safe play.\u00a0 We had a great class discussion yesterday on why we have to be more careful than the ice hockey players do.\u00a0 I was really impressed with how much the Grade 2&#8217;s shared about what they had learned last year!!\u00a0 Without all the padding and safety equipment (helmets, face guards, mouth guards, etc.) that\u00a0ice hockey players have,\u00a0we are more vulnerable to injury and therefore need to exercise more caution.<\/p>\n<p>We have also begun the process\u00a0for our artistic entries\u00a0which will\u00a0be included in a biennial art programme put on by the Burnaby Art Gallery called, Arts Alive.\u00a0 This event is a great opportunity for our students.\u00a0 Arts Alive happens every year but alternates between secondary and elementary schools &#8211; this year being ours.\u00a0 Completed art is adjudicated by a jury panel from the Burnaby Art Gallery who come out to the schools.\u00a0 Pieces of art which are chosen are taken to the BAG to be put on display for the duration of the art show &#8211; about one month in the Spring.\u00a0 All art pieces are photographed for the &#8216;digital display&#8217;\u00a0which can be\u00a0viewed at the art gallery and is also available on-line.<\/p>\n<p>Themes are chosen for each year and the theme for this year is &#8216;places of memory&#8217;.\u00a0 In preparation for our art production we are exploring the concept of &#8216;memory&#8217;.\u00a0\u00a0I read a picture book by Mem Fox called Wilfrid Gordon MacDonald Partridge.\u00a0 This story is about a young boy learning about and exploring the idea of what memory is through bits of advice he receives in\u00a0his\u00a0quest to help an elderly woman from the &#8216;old folk&#8217;s home&#8217; next to his house regain her &#8216;lost&#8217; memory.<\/p>\n<p>Students have been thinking about their own family memories.\u00a0 We have had many discussions about the different kinds of memories &#8211; happy, sad, angry, worried, precious.\u00a0 We will be talking about &#8216;powerful&#8217; memories later this week.\u00a0 Students will be choosing a\u00a0 special, powerful memory about a place they have been to or know well.\u00a0 The process of developing their final art pieces will be explored through drawings and writings and will then be melded into a final artistic piece in an unusual (surprise) medium for creating pictures.\u00a0 More information to come &#8211; stay tuned!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome back to a new &#8216;calendar&#8217; year in the midst of our current &#8216;school&#8217; year.\u00a0 We have six short months\u00a0remaining\u00a0together and a lot of great learning left to do.
