{"id":1201,"date":"2013-11-07T22:06:34","date_gmt":"2013-11-08T06:06:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/temples\/?p=1201"},"modified":"2013-11-07T22:06:34","modified_gmt":"2013-11-08T06:06:34","slug":"apple-explorations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/temples\/2013\/11\/07\/apple-explorations\/","title":{"rendered":"Apple Explorations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We have been learning about apples.\u00a0 Today we heard a story of how apples got the &#8216;star&#8217; in their centres.\u00a0 Ask your child to tell you the story.<\/p>\n<p>We then looked at a variety (seven) different apples.\u00a0 These were: Honey Crisp, Granny Smith, Ambrosia, Royal Gala, Fuji, MacIntosh, and Spartan.\u00a0 We talked about their similarities and their differences &#8211; colour, shape, size,\u00a0texture of the fruit and its skin.<\/p>\n<p>We\u00a0furthered our exploration by cutting open the Ambrosia apple (sideways) and finding the star.\u00a0 We talked about the core and its storage of seeds.\u00a0 We have also been discussing the concept of core (its meaning as a root source) during our Math unit on patterning.<\/p>\n<p>I then cut each of\u00a0the seven apples into pieces\u00a0which the\u00a0students enjoyed sampling.\u00a0 As I cut\u00a0each one\u00a0we discussed the different textures and firmness of the apples and predicted the sweetness &#8211; or tartness &#8211; of each of them.<\/p>\n<p>I think the students had a good time &#8211; and, hopefully, discovered some new favourite apple flavours while learning about the apples.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We have been learning about apples.\u00a0 Today we heard a story of how apples got the &#8216;star&#8217; in their centres.\u00a0 Ask your child to tell you the story.
