“RETRIEVAL PRACTICE” 6 strategies for effective learning

How to draw to remember more

ORGANIZATION/NOTE TAKING:

1.  Write in a legible colour; these notes were made using the Cornell note taking technique

2.  highlight important words, ideas and concepts; don’t highlight everything

3.  don’t write everything down

4.  develop your own personal style and technique

5.  keep your notes organized; use separate sections for each topic

CONCEPT MAPS

Please use linking words, color to keep ideas together, legend, central idea, ten images as guidelines for how to demonstrate your understanding. If you are still unclear check out the concept map at the end of this post, as it makes good use of color to connect ideas.  DON’T FORGET TO USE LINKING WORDS.

Marking Rubric:

4 – Demonstrates full understanding through clear communication, use of color, linking words, and images.  All significant ideas are included.

3 – Demonstrates good understanding through clear communication, use of color, linking words, and images  One or two significant ideas may be missing.

2 – Demonstrates a basic understanding of concepts.  Communication is usually clear and color, linking words and images are used, but not necessarily to communicate understanding of relationships.

1 – Minimal understanding is demonstrated.  Color, linking words, and / or images may be used, but do not necessarily demonstrate understanding.

Did you Know that the Average Person Remembers
90% of what they do, experience personally or teach someone else
70% of what they say or discuss with others (think study groups)
50% of what they see and hear
30% of what they see (Are you really want just to take a picture of those notes? However, drawing your own concepts maps for the chapter is a good visual tool. )
26% of what they hear (you can record yourself reading notes, ask yourself questions, pause, record reply and listen back to it all)
10% of what they read (within 24 hours, 90% of the material is lost! so just reading a textbook or notes before a test is not the best study strategy)

General tips

  • Answer the questions you find easiest first. Come back to the others later.
  • Don’t spend more than a minute or two on any question. Come back to it later.
  • Answer every question. There is no penalty for guessing.
  • Be careful to mark only one answer choice per question.
  • Consider all answer choices before you choose one. Use the process of elimination to narrow your choices.
