{"id":2198,"date":"2021-11-15T21:58:11","date_gmt":"2021-11-16T05:58:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/smithc\/?p=2198"},"modified":"2022-09-13T14:48:23","modified_gmt":"2022-09-13T21:48:23","slug":"getting-to-know-our-brains-and-self-regulation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/smithc\/getting-to-know-our-brains-and-self-regulation\/","title":{"rendered":"Getting to Know Our Brains and Self-Regulation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today in class as part of our Mind Up Curriculum we learned about the different parts of our brains and how they help us control our emotions and help us learn.<\/p>\n<p>In our lesson today, students learned about their brains, specifically the <strong>limbic system<\/strong> which controls their thoughts and emotions. The three parts of the brain they learned about today were:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Prefrontal cortex<\/strong>: \u00a0\u2018our leader\u2019 right in the front of our brain.<span style=\"-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);\">\u00a0<\/span>It is in charge of making decisions, thinking, learning and problem solving.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Amygdala<\/strong>: \u00a0our \u2018security guard\u2019 that warns our body of danger and stress to protect us.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hippocampus<\/strong>: our memory saver or our filling cabinet\u00a0that stores all of our experiences and everything we learn.<\/p>\n<p>They learned that in a calm and safe state, their amygdala can communicate with the \u2018leader\u2019 or prefrontal cortex to make good decisions.
