This week’s focus will be on addition of 2 two digit numbers using addition in expanded form.  I will be teaching students to add two digit numbers in a couple of ways, so that they can understand two digit addition more fully and eventually be able to do it in their heads.  Teaching students a variety of ways to add allows them to choose which way works best for them. At this point, it also helps students to understand what is actually happening, by breaking it down into parts.  This is likely different from how you (parents) were taught in school. I have written out an explanation of how to do two digit addition this way.  Please have your child also watch the four videos that further explain this method (there are four so that you can do one each day, all four at once, or for some kids one or two videos may be enough).  Then I have attached worksheets for your child to practice with.  First, one with dice using expanded form.  Then doing equations using pencil and paper.  If you do not have a printer, that is not important.  The worksheet simply keeps things organized.  Your child can do them on a piece of paper without the worksheets, but lined paper will help if you have it.  As they may not have seen two digit addition done this way, they may need a bit more help with their Math this week.  Thank you in advance for helping them!  You can send me your child’s work if you like, or let me know if you need my help.

BC Curriculum Expectations:

For Gr. 2 – These are the expectations, but please don’t do this IXL Math yet

  • Add a two-digit and a one-digit number – with regrouping
  • Add two two-digit numbers – without regrouping
  • Add two two-digit number – with regrouping

Here are some samples that I wrote up:

This video teaches how to do expanded form addition close to the way the worksheet I am assigning works.  Expanded form means breaking a number down into tens and ones.

This video will teach your child how to become a mental math ninja!

Another video teaching how to do a two digit addition question using expanded form breaking a number down into tens and ones.

This video first shows addition using tens and ones blocks and then does expanded form.

Try this Math sheet working on using tens and ones blocks and expanded form:

Try these worksheets.  I have left the last one blank and you can change the numbers and try some of your own.
