Math lessons for the week on Subtraction are posted on my blog under Math. Please note that I would like the students to listen to the teaching videos on day 2 and day 3, before doing the work on IXL.
This week’s focus will be on subtraction facts to 20 (introduction of computational strategies)
BC Curriculum Expectations:
For Gr. 2 – Subtraction
- Review – subtract one-digit numbers – up to 10 (2-F.1)
- Review – ways to subtract – up to 10 (2-F.2)
- Review – writing subtraction sentences – up to 10 (2-F.3)
- Subtract doubles (2-F.4)
- Subtract a one-digit number from a two-digit number up to 18 (2-F.5)
- Subtraction with pictures (2-F.6)
- Write subtraction sentences to describe pictures – up to 18 (2-F.7)
- Subtraction input/output tables – up to 18 (2-F.8)
- Subtract zero/all (2-F.9)
In the classroom, I often speak about the fact that addition is always easier for me than subtraction. So I spend a lot of time doing “addition” for subtraction, as it is much easier for some students to think this way. However, the most important thing to remember is that in class, I would be teaching students a variety of ways to do subtraction. All students do not learn it by only teaching them one way.
Day 1: Do review for subtraction:
IXL Math – 2-F.1-3
Day 2:
Watch this video to learn more about different ways to think about subtraction (ignore that he uses “feet” and “inches”):
Subtracting different ways
Then do IXL Math – 2-F.4-6
Day 3:
Watch this video to see a different way to think about subtraction
Subtracting 14 – 6
Then do IXL Math – 2-F.7-9
