This week’s focus will be on related addition and subtraction facts to 20, word problems and number concepts to 100

BC Curriculum Expectations:

For Gr. 2

Day 1: Please watch the following video about Word Problems

https://www.khanacademy.org/math/early-math/cc-early-math-add-sub-20/cc-early-math-word-problems-within-20/v/sea-monsters-and-superheroes

Then do IXL Math 2-F.10, 2-F.12, 2-X.3

Day 2: Please watch the following video about Fact Families

The idea behind Fact Families/Related Facts is that three numbers are always connected/related to one another.  For example, 2, 3, 5 are related to each other because if you add 2 and 3, the answer will always be 5.  Conversely, using we can also say that 3 and 2 will be 5.  However, 5 – 2 =3 and 5 – 3 = 2.  Rather than memorizing a bunch of random mathematical equations, retention will occur if we are able to connect numbers together.  To help with relating the three numbers, we use a triangle as the symbol.  The two smaller numbers (which will be the addends) are at the base of the triangle, and the sum is at the top of the triangle (the biggest number).  From there they are able to generate two addition equations (“math sentences”) and two subtractions equations.

I want the students to know their basic math facts without having to use their fingers to count.  In the video you will see that the later examples show a triangle with one of the three numbers missing.  Try this at home.  They need to decide whether they start with the + equations or the – equations.  I am hoping that if it says 2 and 5, they will know that 7  is part of this relationship or 5 and 6 will be with 11 without having to use their fingers.

Then do IXL  Math 2-K.1-3 and 2-X.1-2

Day 3: Do IXL Math for comparing numbers and putting numbers in order by doing 2-B.1 and 2-B.3.

On your other two days, try these two games if you like!  For Keep The Difference, you will have to use two dice per person, because you won’t have the special 12 sided dice.  Add your two dice together to get your number (gives you good practice on getting faster!)
