This week’s Math may seem different to you, as you may not have learned it this way in school. Rather than having to learn how to “borrow”, it teaches subtraction using a number line and a more linear strategy to find the difference. This is one of the reasons we have spent a lot of time learning our tens and ones with Place Value. I want to teach the students many strategies for doing subtraction so that they really understand the process and can use the strategy that works best for them.

The videos below will show how to do two digit subtraction using an open number line.  The first few videos show how to do subtraction using ADDITION. Many students find this easier, as they are not taking away numbers but are adding to find the DIFFERENCE. The next few videos show a couple of ways using SUBTRACTION of tens and ones to find the difference. At the bottom of the videos you will find some sheets to use with your kids to try this strategy of subtraction. Next week, we will do subtraction vertically and will work on IXL Math. Please don’t jump ahead this week and do it, as we will be learning how to do it next week. Thanks!

Two digit subtraction using counting up (addition) on a number line.

This video is a bit more challenging, showing adding on to find the answer to a subtraction question.

This video shows how to do subtraction on a number line using two methods; subtracting and adding. It is a bit more advanced, as she doesn’t break the numbers down into 10’s, but does bigger jumps. Watch this video if you think you are ready for this more challenging method.

This video shows how to do subtraction by 10’s on an open number line. Please move to minute 3:08 on the video to see the subtraction question.

This video shows how to do subtraction by 10’s on an open number line.

This video shows subtraction by 10’s on an open number line.

This video shows another way to do subtraction by 10’s on an open number line.

Here are the worksheets to try this week for your two digit subtraction:

This is a booklet of Math subtraction pages. You can print them out or make your own open ended number lines on a piece of paper using the numbers from these pages.  Please use pages 6-19 and then pages 24-28. Remember, these are not all mandatory, but are there to use as you like.
