As part of the term 3 report card, all students must complete a self-assessment on our six core competencies: communication, critical thinking, creative thinking, personal awareness & responsibility, positive personal & cultural identity, and social awareness & responsibility. The readings for this week are important as they give descriptions and examples of all the core competencies.

This self-assessment is mandatory and must be completed by all students.

Mandatory Tasks:

  1. Read: To provide some insight into the core competencies, our selected book for this week is The Six Cedar TreesA read aloud of the book can be found at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0BvFg5jb8Mo

2. Read: Read the “Six Cedar Trees – Learner Statements”  http://blogs.sd41.bc.ca/gilmore-library/the-six-cedars/connecting-understanding-each-animal/.  (Click on the words CONNECTING – Understanding each animal)

  • Which of these qualities do you see in your family?
  • Discuss with your family how each statement in the “Six Cedar Trees – Learner Statements” relates to you

4. Complete the online Core Competency Assessment of the six core competencies. This is a mandatory self-assessment that will be part of the term 3 report card. Please be honest and thoughtful as you are completing this assessment. Keep in mind that everyone will have areas in which they feel most successful and areas in which they’d like to improve, and that’s okay!

Write about why you connect with that animal the most AND/OR draw a picture of that animal using one of the links below, or [super challenge] try to draw your animal in an aboriginal style of art using the picture of your animal from the end of The Six Cedar Trees book.  Send your writing and picture to Ms Shellard to post in your Blogfolio.
