Poppy Art with Ms. Janvier

In our Indigenous Studies today with Ms. Janvier, she taught us about the medicine wheel colours (black, white, yellow and red) and how different indigenous bands made unique poppies using a variety of colours and materials such as moose leather, animal hair and beads.  A poppy is to remember.

   

 

Rainy Days

Fall has arrived!  The weather can change from wind to rain to sun and back to rain again all on the same day!  Children will be going outside as much as possible for some fresh air and to release some sillies.  It is important for students and families to understand that this is our  “West Coast weather.”  Please help remind your child to dress for the weather – umbrellas, boots and a warm coat!  See school mail sent home today.

Home Reading

Our Home Reading Program is underway.  I can appreciate your busy home schedules.  However, it is vital for students to find time each day to practice reading orally as well as quiet personal reading time.  The goal is for each child to read 20-30 minutes daily.  After 25 nights of reading, students can return the blue reading checklist and receive a Gilmore Reading Certificate!  Thank you for your co-operation.

Welcome Grade 2s & 3s

My name is Tammy Pears.  I will be your child’s teacher this year on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.  Mrs. Deb Siu will be working with your child on Tuesdays.

Gilmore classes have now been set for the year.  Thank you for your patience with this challenging process.  Our class is ‘Division 13’ and consists of grades 2 and 3 students.  We have 21 students.  I believe communication is key to a successful year for both parents and students.  Once planners are sent home, please check and sign daily for any message and important reminders.  As well, our monthly class calendars and any notices are also posted on this blog.   I am looking forward to meeting many parents and guests at our ‘Parents as Partners (Meet the Teacher Night)’, September 26th and 27th.

Establishing Routines

During September we were familarizing ourselves with the routines of the week.  We continue to practice working together while keeping in mind ‘The Big 3’ – safe, kind, fair and positive, supportive behaviour choices.  Our class has now been introduced to spelling routines, gym and library book exchanges.  Your child will be able to take out up to 3 books from the library.  However, this year our library time will not be booked on a weekly basis. Children are being encouraged to read for 15-20 each night.  When a book is completed, students should then request to return or exchange library books as needed during the daily “Open Book Times” schedules (Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs).
