The children have enjoyed applying their mathematical thinking to count different materials and objects. This hands-on experience has been a great introduction to our Multiplication Unit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva;\"><strong>What are some concepts we practice during counting collection time?\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"paragraph\">\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva;\">one-to-one correspondence<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva;\">cardinality &#8211; knowing the last number stated when counting represents the total\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva;\">stable order\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva;\">subitizing<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva;\">estimating<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva;\">place value (e.g., teens as ten and some more, 2-digit numbers as groups of tens and ones, etc.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva;\">connecting a count to a numeral\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva;\">skip counting\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva;\">multiplicative thinking (e.g., I have five groups of seven and three more)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva;\">division (and how this is related to multiplication)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva;\">flexible counting strategies\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva;\">factors and multiples &#8211; which can lead to discussions about prime and composite numbers<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva;\">Estimation + Counting Strategies:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva;\">We started off by estimating how many items were in each bag. We then had to figure out different strategies to find the answer. We counted by <span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">1`<code>s, 2`s , 3`s, 5`s and 10`s<\/code><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1076\" src=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/pastorag\/files\/2021\/03\/1_IMG_1794.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/pastorag\/files\/2021\/03\/1_IMG_1794.jpg 480w, https:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/pastorag\/files\/2021\/03\/1_IMG_1794-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/pastorag\/files\/2021\/03\/1_IMG_1794-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva;\"><strong>Introduction to equal groups in multiplication:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva;\">Students used their counting collections to make equal groups.
