In recent years, the LGBT community have made great progress in claiming rights and inclusion. I say this with a great deal of happiness but also sadness. In many countries, homosexuality is a crime that can be punishable by death. It is the reason why days like today are so very important in fighting for the rights and freedom of the people who identify as LGBTQ. Today is International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia & Transphobia! It is a day that people of all different backgrounds can stand in solidarity as allies with the LGBTQ community by being an upstander not a bystander. <\/p>\n

Just to clarify, here are some important terms: <\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Homophobia: <\/strong>Negative attitudes, dislike and\/or prejudice of homosexual (gay\/lesbian people. <\/li>\n
  2. Biphobia: <\/strong>Negative attitudes, dislike and or\/ prejudice of bisexual people. <\/li>\n
  3. Transphobia: <\/strong>Negative attitudes, dislike and or\/ prejudice of transgender people. <\/li>\n
  4. Gay:<\/strong> Males who are attracted to other males<\/li>\n
  5. Lesbian: <\/strong>Females who are attracted to other females<\/li>\n
  6. Bisexual:<\/strong> A person who is attracted or has romantic feelings for both males and females <\/li>\n
  7. Transgender:<\/strong> A person whose identity & gender does not match with their sex. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The United Nations recognises 193 countries in the world. Sadly, 69 of those countries criminalise same-sex relations. Imagine that for a moment. Imagine being told that you must be a certain way. You must follow everyone else even if that does not feel normal or natural for you.<\/p>\n

    Okay, let me try to relate this for you a bit more. Imagine if: <\/p>\n

    -Tiya, Jemimah, Leah, Pei Yi or Amelia were told that they could not create any more artsy projects because they are…wrong! <\/p>\n

    -Dennis, Kevin, Jeron, Lim, Mark, Jason, Billy or Arnav were told that they could not plan Fortnite anymore because it is SO wrong. Don’t even get me started on their WWF wrestling. <\/p>\n

    -Matthew, Reilly, Daniel, Kenrich, Vincent or Harry were told that they could not be a part of Border Security because that is just plain…wrong! <\/p>\n

    -Johnny, Bernice and Cece were not allowed to read because that is just so unnatural! <\/p>\n

    -Hanaa & Kareena could not be sassy anymore because that is just completely wrong!<\/p>\n

    -Tamara, Milica, Amra, Beatrice were not allowed to dance because that is just so inappropriate. And yes, Frederick would certainly not be able to twerk either! <\/p>\n
