What’s Worse: The Coronavirus or The Racism/Xenophobia ?

So, as we have all heard, the Coronavirus is currently all the talk! Turn on the news, and there it is! Not that we should discredit the toll that this virus is taking, nor the people that it is effecting, however there seems to be a large, maybe even a larger storm brewing. What is that, you may ask? Racism and Xenophobia.

Remember we defined these terms as the following:

  1. Racism: Is a form of prejudice, discrimination, or hatred against someone of a different ethnicity / cultural group. Racism is also related to the belief that ‘their’ group is superior to all others.
  • Racism can be shown in jokes, phrases or ‘hate crimes.’ For example, simply beating someone up because of their ethnicity. (Yes, this has happened in the lower mainland before). It is apparent in attitudes, values and stereotypical beliefs (yes, you will be surprised, some people believe stereotypes to be true.)

2. Racial Discrimination: The acting out of racism.

  • Racial discrimination:  Includes any action(s) that singles someone out based on their ethnicity. Racial harassment is a form of discrimination which can include: comments, jokes, name-calling, insulting pictures, or put downs based on ethnicity.

3. Stereotypes: A generalised, over-simplified idea/thought about a group of people or thing.

4. Xenophobia: A dislike/hatred against people from other countries. (People who are thought to ‘foreign’).  In this case, it would be a fear against East-Asians.

As we have been discussing in Social Studies, racism was very apparent in our Canadian history but also very relevant in our society today. With the outbreak of the Coronavirus, many East-Asians are feeling that they are being treated differently…in a negative way.

This article tells the story of Amy Go’s friend who witnessed a racist comment being made on the bus. A woman said to two East- Asian men wearing face masks: “Do you have the Chinese disease?” Please read the article below and watch the video clips.

Of reading these articles and exploring these terms, what are your thoughts about what is occurring? Have you noticed people being treated differently because of their cultural background or have you been treated differently? Why do you think that some people of East-Asian backgrounds are being targeted by racial discrimination or xenophobia? What are your thoughts on Justin Trudeau’s words in the clip you watched? Hashtags are very important phrases that help people connect. We saw of some in the last article listed in this post, like #IamNotaVirus. If you were starting a movement, what hashtag would you create? Grade 5’s 20 sentences, grade 6’s 25 sentences. Please try to use the words that were listed above in your response (racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia, xenophobic, and stereotypes).

In my opinion, I think that the discrimination about the coronavirus is going too far and is causing xenophobia over East Asians which is extremely unkind o those people who look Asian and that others believing that they have the coronavirus even though they don’t. I know that people are trying to be safe about their own health, but I don’t think blaming Asian looking people is not the right thing to do and that they should think about their own actions too, before saying or doing something stereotypical even though so and so may not have the coronavirus. It is completely wrong for someone to judge others just because their backgrounds are related to an Asian culture because this issue is very serious, and I think that every single person should also treat it serious too because I know that the racial discrimination going on so far is just making everything worse by making people upset. Even though the whole coronavirus issue started from China doesn’t mean that every single Chinese person out there might have it too even though they might have not been there recently. But that is completely wrong because barely people didn’t expect this to happen and this whole outbreak is now getting worse even though it wasn’t people’s faults about the virus. I know that you need to be cautious, but I can’t believe that people are starting to treat each other like a virus or crap just because of their nationality. Instead of acting like that, I think taking even more action should be what people are doing. They should be more alert instead of wasting their time trying to pull down Asian people by discriminating and hurting them just thinking that that one single person or group has the coronavirus. I felt extremely sorry for the people who have been struck by the racism as it was not their fault and they were innocent. I have completely noticed a big change of people treating each other differently due to their cultural background even though I personally haven’t witnessed or experienced it yet because by now, I can tell that many people not only in Canada, that they are overexaggerating this issue a bit too much. I think that East Asian background people are being targeted because the coronavirus started from China in Wuhan and that other East Asian nations are neighbors with China so maybe, people started to worry that other East Asian countries might have a load of people with the coronavirus too. For example, I think that people are also discriminating the Japanese because on the news, it said that in the port of Yokohama, Japan, there was a cruise ship and on it, someone from Hong Kong had the coronavirus and it spread so now, people are stuck on the cruise ship but one by one, they are starting to evacuate a few people and bring them back to their country as long as they do not have the coronavirus. That just explains that Japan and Hong Kong were unfortunate about what happened and that maybe, some people are now discriminating other Asian countries just because, ‘other East Asian countries contain the coronavirus as it can spread easily to neighboring countries.’ Yes, that might have happened but, it is partially mean and is partially wrong. I only think that the coronavirus can only spread if someone who has recently been to China, (Wuhan) comes to another country and has the symptoms for the virus, then it could spread if you were nearby that person and breathed that person’s air. I think Justin Trudeau’s words are correct and I agree with him that there is no place for discrimination in this country just because of fear or information that is incorrect. He is right and I think people are having trouble to recognize that right now. This situation is very serious, and we should understand that this xenophobia and racism is not what’s important and it’s not right for us. The first most important thing is our health and being aware of the coronavirus. Yes, I understand that he wants us to be supportive and to help each other. We must trust each other to know that we will not stand for this. His words were very strong, but I think there is only one point I must criticize about. I think that instead of saying that we must think about the future, would say that we must stay calm and not panic. I would’ve said we must stop the nonsense and the stereotypes and must always stay healthy and careful about what may happen next. If I were to make a Hashtag, I would write/say . . .
    #It’sNotLikeEveryEastAsianPersonIsContagiouswithTheCoronavirus
    #StopTheRacismAndLet’sStayStrongTogether

This year 2020 is a bad year because of the. coronavirus is causing racism. in the first picture that’s racist racial discrimination is a act. of being a pain or hurting someone by there skin colour. and the person posting that paper on the window. should get a fine and the next word stereotypes are. like a protest of people against trump xenophobia is. like the people hating the chinese right now and. People think that if your chinese that you have the corona. viruses and people have a normal life so we (people)dont. have to fight we can all be friends but some people just don’t know what to so my article is about the virus but we. may look chinese but we don’t have the virus and. I don’t mind looking Asian i like to be Asian because of you. get great food and i love my Asian family the thing i like. Most about being Asian is getting money and I like myself. class last year my teacher played basketball and. you could not dripple but i am grateful for everything. that life has to offer that’s it that’s all i have thank you.

  4. althea2 says:

Based on the articles, it seems that people don’t realize that the people with Chinese background are trying to prevent the virus from spreading. I think that we should realize that some racial discriminatory actions are offending others. Also, when it comes to health care, I think that we all should be supportive of others who might be carrying this virus.
Recently at the store with my family, I couldn’t help hearing at the checkout that a woman of Chinese background wasn’t allowed to buy the things she needed. Then, shop assistant threw everything she had needed in the garbage. Also, I was out with my friend and her dad, and someone shouted at her dad, “Get you and your family out of this country, you’re a virus.” My friend and her dad were so taken aback because they didn’t even have the symptoms of the virus.
I think people of East-Asian backgrounds are being targeted by racial remarks and xenophobia because they say that the corona virus was originated from East-Asian areas. Personally, I think that all the remarks are very xenophobic, and they should not be mentioned for cause of many crucial thought’s processed by the victims. Perhaps some people don’t know the impact of their actions or they just say these things because they have a reason no hate Chinese. However bad the thoughts are, I think that we need to stop these remarks immediately and apologize for them.
I think that Justin Trudeau’s words made sense and defended the supposedly Chinese victims of the virus. However, when he said that Canada is supposed to recognize and help those in need and not make racial comments toward them, many may start riots about Trudeau and his support of the Chinese. They may even elect a new Prime Minister to take his place.
If I was starting a movement in favor of all kids who are being bullied at schools for their other side which is Chinese, #Wearepeopletoo, or like the other person, #IamnotaVirus. This is because that we are people, not viruses even if we might be carrying one. Calling people viruses is stereotyping because that is their own belief and it’s not possible to be one.
In conclusion, I think that we should all be aware that when we are making remarks, they might be considered xenophobic and racist to the people that they are directed to. Also, we should be aware of stereotyping because this is other beliefs that people consider true. Because of these actions, I feel that Canada has not been improving after they had apologized for many things they have done in the past, like discrimination against certain groups of people.

  5. labib1 says:

I think this is a dumb situation because this is a thing that we must tackle with a lot of bumps on the way to curing it and this racism and Xenophobia is disturbing and just unnecessary. There is no one you should blame for a virus that has no physical proof against any certain human or animal except possibly snakes or bats. Chinese people don’t have any look alike with any bat and we are blaming them because they had this virus originating at their country and I think they should be receiving some assistance because more and more people there are dying, and no one can pay the price of losing someone. I think we should also applaud China for being so open about this because in past outbreaks like the severe acute respiratory syndrome aka SARS which was where China kept it top secret and didn’t share it. This made it so we didn’t know about this virus and infected and killed people in the country before the government could act. I think China played it well and should be getting the opposite effect because they are receiving unnecessary hate towards innocents trying to survive from the virus. like us. Xenophobia honestly shouldn’t be a WORD or even racism because we should be better than this an should be able to work together. This is a ridiculous problem because we are all humans who are supposed to be on this together to find a vaccine for it and stop it as quick as you can. I have also seen connections in our past history like in residential schools the indigenous people were put in a very bad and racist situation but that did not stop them from bullying each other, in that situation, I would influence people in my school to start a riot and we would probably be able to get out working together.

I have seen many news reports on Chinese people getting stereotyped and a stereotype in this situation would probably be “China is home to the Chinese virus.” This of course is not true and this stuff is dangerous because let us say this stereotype got to the Chinese government over and over again, the government would probably get mad sooner or later and might take some horrible action which could cause wars and a huge conflict sidetracking us from the novel coronavirus. I have seen several cases like this were people think the origin of the virus is responsible for all of it. I think these are just wrong because today I also saw a news article saying China’s virus death toll rises to 811 and instead of saying coronavirus kills 811 people in China because that could mislead people into thinking that China really is responsible. I even see people calling it the Wuhan virus which is even more racist and discriminatory because people from that place that were able to flee and are struggling are also feeling hate. Racism shouldn’t be involved on something already so deadly and will just make it worse. Rumors are maybe going to be the end of us, and we can only solve that we must be serious like what Yuen Kwok Yung said because if we don’t and continue acting like this, the world might lose mighty population.

I agree with Justin Trudeau because he is right that Canada shouldn’t be resembled for being racist and discriminatory because my family came to Canada for our sake and for us to grow in a country where it is safe and no one would judge you and if Xenophobia is in Canada it just broke my golden rule. I know Canada would be in the top 5 most diverse countries but that would prove that wrong and as I go through the lists on the article of countries who are keeping Chinese out I think that they should rethink and really think about what long term effects those words can have because they are just wrong. I would also think the government would take actions to stop this but they aren’t any help and are deciding to close borders which is ok if they want their country to be safe but at the same time, they can do a test to see if they have the virus instead of saying no to Chinese people. We should be open minded on this outbreak and help each other out and always seem to get to this point that in racism or sexism we are the same and only have each other to solve this. WHO (World Health Organization) is doing good in giving updates on what we should do but if they let everyone know not to be racist towards a country trying so hard to let everyone know it is not their fault and that we are all on this to find a cure everyone would increase awareness on this topic. It would cause a big effect on how we treat others from this lesson. That sign that says that we can’t except Chinese because of their “virus” is first just wrong and I can’t accept it and secondly it wouldn’t make sense because if you had citizens in your country with a virus you would want to help them, that should apply everywhere because what if a Chinese citizen had a flu or something worse? You wouldn’t be accepting almost 18.2% of the world and that is just people in China.

My hashtag for this would be #endracismforever because If I wanted to start a movement I would want it to be so that it would stop all kinds of racism and not just this one because it will just repeat over and over again if we don’t put a stop. I also think we shouldn’t even categorize each other to different type of Asians because if you want to be racist towards China, get ready to face all of Asia. In conclusion, this is just so unnecessary and will affect us later if we don’t put a stop to it and we will get sidetracked from the focus of solving and figuring out a vaccine for the novel coronavirus and it is not called the Chinese virus or anything like that and has nothing to do with Chinese or has minimal things to do with Chinese.

I think it is discriminatory how Chinese people are thought to have the coronavirus just because they are part of Chinese heritage. After I read the article about Connor and his friend, I saw that how they are treated is very racist. Connor was playing with his friend when some boys came and decided to “test” them for the coronavirus. At first Connor and his friend were okay with it, but they soon became uncomfortable. Connor’s mom was outraged about this, so she told TIME about this problem. This is why I think this has gone too far. Just because they are part of Chinese heritage, they are stereotyped. One example of this was when the boys approached Connor and his friend, they had no way of knowing that they encountered someone with the coronavirus, they just assumed that they might’ve because they were both part Chinese. The Canadian government already made it very clear that they have the problem all under control, so people shouldn’t be overreacting about the virus. Instead, people should take initiative and follow the government’s rules (wash your hands, cover your sneezes and coughs with your elbow, etc). I think the boys must’ve hurt Connor and his friend’s feelings, and they must’ve been hurt by that comment. The boys should have thought of how they would have felt if they were Connor or his friend (treat others how you want to be treated). Even though Connor’s mom said that the boys didn’t mean to be racist or discriminatory, the coronavirus is not a joke and should be taken seriously. Approximately 900 people have died from the coronavirus in China, so no-one should be making any sorts of jokes about the coronavirus. I have never noticed anybody with an East-Asian background being discriminated, but I do know somebody that was backed away from the moment they entered a skytrain (just because of their race). I think that this was very discriminatory, and that it is very unfair how Chinese people are treated about the coronavirus. I think that people with East-Asian backgrounds are targeted by racial discrimination and xenophobia because some of them are from China, and because the coronavirus started in China, it is thought that everybody that is part of Chinese heritage has a high chance of having the coronavirus. Some people might behave in a xenophobic way, and they might be afraid of East-Asian people arriving by plane to Canada because they might spread the virus (that they probably don’t even have). This brings us to Justin Trudeau and what he said in the clip. I think that Justin Trudeau is correct, and that people should support each other, and that there is no place in our country for discrimination and/or racism. There also shouldn’t be any racial discrimination (judging someone because of their race). If I was to start a movement, my hashtag would be #VirusIsNoJoke. I would pick this hashtag because it is a very important message, and it is not meant to be any kind of joke. All in all, I think that the coronavirus or any other virus that might appear in the future should be taken seriously, and instead of making jokes about it, people should follow the government’s guidelines to stay healthy and that way, there would be no reason to overreact.

  7. jeremy17 says:

HI YA HI YA! Oh, my bad. to the topic. Well, I’d like to say, this is mean. My biggest thought on this is that whoever is racist against this “Chinese” virus or close enough should get a punishment. But to what i think Justin Trudeau could have done better. He should have added what would happen if someone is racist against the Coronavirus or Chinese people in Canada (which has happened already). Just like when he said “there is no place in Canada to discrimination lead by fear or miss understanding”. I have seen people being effected if they were Chinese in a way. I think there are other reasons of why they would be very racist about it. Like it has started in china but people don’t want to risk getting the virus. Just like those reasons, I think that’s why people don’t want to be near Chinese. To me, those are only reasons to why i think people don’t like Chinese people any more. But that shouldn’t lead to not liking Chinese. But back to what i was saying, I have only seen it on my T.V. I usually stay at home or go out if we need food or if I need a break from the house. I think some people of east Asian backgrounds are being targeted by racial discrimination is because in the past, I’ve seen before that they have been treated badly by xenophobia before. I think that the people bullying east Asian background people only do it because before. They think of a stereotype like, “since its happened before, they would go all over it again and it’ll be just like the other times”. I do think there are more reasons why they would use racial discrimination against them. For my hashtag, it’ll be something that has to do with not just Chinese have it. Or maybe other countries could start getting it by THEIR animals. I’ve done some research on how it started, but all that I get is that it starts in Wuhan china (we know that,) where people have illegally sold animal meat and have contaminated the virus to them from the animals. So with that in mind, I’ve come up with a hashtag. Its #UCanStartTheVirusToo. I think its good but long because people around the world could have sold illegally and gotten the virus. And that’s where ill wrap it up for this blog post. BYE YA BYE YA! (i think I exaggerate to much on those HI YA and BYE YA stuff. WOOHOOO!)

  8. marko16 says:

Coronavirus originates from a city in Asia called Wuhan.
It is found in animals and can be spread to humans with direct contact.
Many researchers are saying this virus is found in bats.
In the articles I read, it is believed that it can be transferred from animal to human by eating animals.
Your body opens more to viruses if you are sick, heavy smoker, alcoholic.
Also reading through the articles teacher suggested to read, I think many people are giving racist comments.
People know that the virus originating in China and are thinking if people from China are traveling to Canada might be affected with it.
For example if another country had a virus originating from, let’s say Easter Europe, people would be scared as well.
I am sure it is not because it’s China but people are scared.
    Yes we should be coutius.
It’s not that Chinese can spread disease.
Maybe white people went to China and got the virus.
They can spread it as well.
Even the simple cold influenza can kill people and it does every year.
These people are usually the ones that are very sick and their immune system is low.
I wonder what would be people’s reaction if the white people got coronavirus?
Would that affect the racist comments?
People should educate themselves about the virus.
Learn more about the virus, how to prevent getting the virus and spreading.
Educating themselves would be helpful to all so they don’t have to assume things, being mean and racist to people wearing masks or being Chinese.
Many people wearing face masks are doing it so they don’t spread the viruses around.
Not necessarily coronavirus but any cold virus.
I know some wearing them for their own protection as well.
Some people think all chines are infected just of there origin.
Not all chines have the virus.

The Coronavirus started discrimination and fear all around the world. People are now talking about the virus. Experts are saying that it came from bats and snakes or even pangolins. The virus is already a problem. But some people say, it was the Chinese’s fault for eating wild animals at first. So, the Chinese are unwelcoming in some places. People treat the Chinese like a virus. They don’t let they in their shops or being nice in public places. In the article, many children were bullied just because they had a Chinese culture. Back when the Chinese first came to Canada, they faced racism and discrimination. I thought it was gone for a long time, but looks like it is back. I watched a short clip online about the Coronavirus, the video was from another country. And a taxi driver asked the passage if they were from China. As soon as the passenger said “almost” the driver put on a gas mask. Both the passenger and the driver was laughing like it was a joke, but it is not cool to make fun of something so serious. Many people blame the Chinese for starting the virus. But the thing is, they didn’t know that the wild animals had the virus in them. I saw a newspaper in Canada, and on the front, it said 2ND CASE OF CHINA VIRUS IN BRITISH COLUMNBIA. What do they mean as China virus? And I also saw on google, a newspaper which had a picture of the Chinese flag. But instead of the five stars, it was five balls of the Coronavirus. My hash tag is #stopthediscrimination. The discrimination should stop. The East Asian group is being treated differently. People around the world describe the Chinese as the Virus. When people see Chinese on the street, the avoid them and run. And on the train, them move away from them. The Coronavirus has spread doom to the world. We all hope it ends.

  10. alan6 says:

Ok so first, why would anyone criticize a person who has a background of a culture that a person does not like. But that’s just dumb, like who even learned from kinder garden that it is fine of who you are. This is what I think of this bad thing. Who cares what culture or background you are. And if you saw in the blog you would see a note in a picture that says if you are Chinese then you are not allowed in this store. And it is like we all think we learned from the internment camps and all that war. But no, we did not learn anything. And let me tell you why. Well the note that was there was basically telling people not to go in here in this store. And if you compare than some cultures were not allowed in some parts of BC. And yes, I have noticed people getting treated differently. Like in the ways I told you here. But if you think of it, who does that. But the good thing is that I have not been treated differently. The reason I think that people of east Asian backgrounds are being treated differently are. Well I think it is because of the corona virus. It is because it started in China, and since that China is part of the eats part of Asia so the country’s that are close it people think it also affects them. So that is bad. And people need to know that not all people have the virus. I agree with the speech that Justin gave. And I think that there is no place for fear and discrimination. And that is how the world should be. And for my hash tag I would do #stop this fight. and in my opinion, I think that it it is wrong to do this. All these bad things that happened around this is bad. And it is not just this that is bad. There are a lot of things that happens around the world. And you know how the people that don’t like the Chinese for what happened well a lot of that is stereotypes and that is bad. And I think this is what they think about that. Who cares about just one person it won’t do a thing. And no, you are doing it to the whole some part of Asia. And let me just tell you for a fact that all that things are basically bulling. And yes, I said it. Bulling. And that is for the reason of the things they do to them. And this is all true. Thanks for listening.

My Blog Post. Ever since the Coronavirus came some people started to develop xenophobia. This has caused people to make sure there were at least like 10 meters away from east Asian people. Now people don’t accept Chinese people and what if they are sick, but they will think they have the Coronavirus. Remember when there was racial discrimination? Well here it is again. How? It is because now people such as white people are now making jokes about the corona virus and how they are hating on the east Asian people most likely the Chinese people. People tend to stay away from the Chinese people because they think that they are going to catch the Coronavirus. Like in the picture, they don’t accept Chinese people even if they want to get their nails done but nope, they don’t get it at all. And now there are stereotypes. The stereotype for this now is Chinese people has the Coronavirus yada yada yada. In the past there were terrible stuff but now there is this. People are now getting treated differently just because of their background. I know that people have risks to not get the Coronavirus. But it doesn’t mean that you can’t spend time with people that are east Asian. I bet the Chinese people feel sad about this because everyone is hating on them. Not only people are only getting away from them. They are getting physically bullied and hurt just because the Coronavirus accrued. Well I hope this fade away and everything will be the same. #Not everyone is a virus.

  12. maya33 says:

    It’s Just the Coronavirus
Many people are being racist to the Chinese. Even though some Chinese man or woman got the Coronavirus doesn’t mean that all the Chinese have the coronavirus. The coronavirus isn’t that bad either. You have under 2% chance to die from it. But it doesn’t mean that it is good either. It’s like saying someone was sick in our class. It doesn’t really mean that all our classmates are sick now. What triggers me is that this dang lady asked the people “do you have the Chinese disease?” because they were wearing masks. If they’re wearing masks doesn’t mean they have the coronavirus. If they didn’t have the coronavirus they’d still probably be wearing the mask. It disappoints me that she also calls it the Chinese disease. Why would she choose to call it like that? at least I know what the word Coronavirus is. And the worst and dumbest part is that she didn’t even come to this interview. It was her friend. But I’m not just angry at her, I’m also angry at many other people that I don’t even know. My mom says I can’t really be angry at someone when you don’t even know them. But I do know them, at least apart of them. I know that they are rude and racist. Even this store thinks it right that they should add this sign that says that they do not allow any Chinese people in their store and then at the end they add thanks for understanding. Who ever said we were understanding. First, they can’t read minds, so you don’t know if we understand or not. Second, they think that only the Chinese has the coronavirus. It’s not just the Chinese. Third. Who knew that adding a racist sign acting like it was a good idea would not give you any bad reviews. Yeah, that store better be thinking about what they did now. If I was there I would’ve taken a piece of paper and write down #People don’t count as a disease. and maybe if I were able to do that, people would start doing what I would’ve done.

  13. lorenzo6 says:

I think that this is a very racist situation that is happening again. Why can’t all this racism stop and we all move on to good deeds. So people are probably not wanting the corona virus. I don’t want the virus either, but you just don’t need to be so racist about it. I think being racist is mean but the corona virus may be worse. People could die because of it. But people could commit suicide because they have had heard enough mean things. Many people around the world are suffering because of this virus. What if people just want a good life, but have the corona virus. Go somewhere that would make them happy and so they would forget they have the virus and enjoy their life they might not ever have again. They go over to Disney land to make them happy, and the first note they see at the entrance, is something like: get out of here you virus. So they would just leave and the last time they have ever been there was maybe 5 years ago. So they would never see their favorite place again. Many people have the corona virus as you are reading this blog post. So we must pray for the corona virus to stop and for all the people who have it. Lots of people have been racist about this virus. If they get the virus then it’s their fault for not knowing how it feels to the person they were being racist to. There were about 4 people in Canada with the corona virus and 12 people in the united states of america with the virus. However, it happened if they ate rats and bats or whatever else they ate. I hope that scientists find a cure for this virus so we can all stop worrying about getting the virus. So people all around the world should stop making fun of Chinese people. because remember, not every Chinese has the corona virus. its probably just a myth. so i hope for the best of all Chinese people because they get picked on. even though there are about 28000 people in China with the virus. but that does not give you an excuse for the virus.

The people are being so judgmental with all these racist acts are happening to these people and they aren’t thinking about what it would feel like if this happened to themselves. That’s why everyone is not safe they’re picking down the human ethnicities on by one. But in the end, everyone will regret what they are doing. My dad really has a lot of racial experiences happen to him. Like a few days ago he went to McDonalds’ and someone asked him if he was in the plane crash or Kobe’s family or is related to him. # The corona virus might be bad, but you don’t have to be racist about it. That was a very true statement. Because lots of people are being racist for no reason at all. This sign of singling ethnicities out is a funny event because these people don’t even learn from their mistakes. I thought everyone can learn from their mistakes. If we can do it why can’t they do it? After all, all it takes is just one very hateful person, and a bunch of followers of that person to make one ethnicity get offended. By racial acts of a whole group. I think that especially how it started people will think all Chinese people are dumb for eating bat’s and rats. And, the guy who first found out the Carona disease told people to be careful, but they ignored him. And this is what they get out of saying that the guy was dumb. That’s what people get its karma they had it coming. They disserved this because they literally asked for it. People need to think before they speak. And that goes for everything. So, this is what I will say carry your brain with you. That is a very big help to those who don’t know. P.s the Carona is worse.

    thank, you

Hello, today I will write about how the Corona virus is causing racism around the world. My thoughts are that this is racial discrimination. I have proof that this is happening. My proof is something that happened in Burnaby, B.C. my sister, Bernice was told by her classmate that he was on the skytrain and, when he entered, he was the only Asian there. Then when the people in the Skytrain saw him they stared at him and, when he walked down the Skytrain the people in it moved away from him like he was some type of monster, one guy actually gave up his seat even though the Skytrain was very crowded. Imagine! This happened in Burnaby, when the Skytrain was very crowded! This is my proof of racial discrimination. I have not noticed this; I have not faced this either. I don’t want to face this anyway, nobody does (except weirdoes). If I faced this, I would probably just ignore whatever the person said then go home and tell my family. I think that East-Asian people are targeted because the Corona virus started in China. That is the reason I think East-Asian people are targeted. Racism is horrible, it makes people feel bad, like they are monsters. I kind of agree with what Justin Trudeau said. I think what he said about the “supporting others” is good, but he should cancel all flights here to Canada. If he did that might help the world by sealing Canada up so if infected people come in it won’t spread. If I would start a movement or crusade, I would create the hashtag #STOPRACISM. I would create this hashtag because of all the Xenophobia going on globally. So many people use stereotypes about the Chinese because the virus started in China. Many people think that Chinese are the smartest people but, they might not be. There are many stereotypes about different cultures some of which are racist. WELL THANKS FOR READING MY REPORT ON THE RACISM THE CORONAVIRUS IS CAUSING!!!!!!

What’s Worse: The Coronavirus or the Racism/Xenophobia?

I thought most of the racism had ended. Obviously, more than half of the racism “still lives!” I have personal encounters to this racism. Marina, Ella, and Tiana know this. A example is when we walked past two girls from our school, but they glared at us and covered their mouths. One girl whispered to her friend and they turned away from us.

What is the coronavirus, and where and how did it start? Well, the coronavirus has spikes all around it, making it look like a crown. Know the word coronation? It’s a crown ceremony. Because of how the spikes represent a crown, that’s how this virus got it’s name. The virus has different levels; a mild symptom of coughing, to pneumonia, and even death. It is caused either when there is close-contact, eating of meat and seafood that had not been checked for illnesses (from the animal), or when someone is vulnerable to colds and spread to others. The coronavirus was first diagnosed in Wuhan, China, and a whistleblower doctor by the name of Li Wenliang bravely told the government. However, the government refused to believe that the virus was a thing, so the government put Li Wenliang in jail. However, Dr. Li was too, diagnosed with coronavirus. The government should have tested for their selves, I mean, what proof did they have that the virus wasn’t a thing? There was also this pregnant lady whose mom had the virus. She passed away a few days later. The lady’s dad also passed away from the virus, and shortly after, the pregnant lady died too. Along with the child inside her tummy. I do not know her, but I think their family must be afraid and sad. The virus is not only infecting people, it’s also infecting these people’s families with sadness and grief, even depression and anxiety.

Apparently from what I heard, Justin Trudeau INVITES people from countries around the world, claiming Canada is perfectly safe- but it’s not! Many people in Canada also have the coronavirus and inviting more people will only make it worse in both ways; spreading it to them and to us.

Racism. That is a word that means a lot of things. It talks about history and discrimination. I’m not lying; a few days ago I went to the store with my mom. We decided to use the face-masks for extra protection. Now this lady passes us and mutters, “Stupid Chinese idiots trying to spread the virus.” I was OFFENDED. I told her politely, “We do not have the virus miss lady.” I said in a voice I would use to talk to kindergarteners. We had a glare war/battle. You can’t just say someone had the virus just because of what they wore or had on! It’s not like your personality will be based on what you wear! It’s called protection. If you didn’t get the message, it’s called P-R-O-T-E-C-T-I-O-N. My mom and I were just trying to mind our own business, and the virus topic comes back up! Xenophobia/Sinophobia (Another “version/synonym” of xenophobia) won’t save you from the coronavirus! It’s just going to keep spreading until there’s a cure!

So really, I think the racism is worse than the virus itself. Every once in a while there’s going to be something bad, but it should definitely NOT be racism!

  17. noorai1 says:

    Coronavirus!!??
News about the Corona virus is spreading faster than a wildfire! As I heard, there is a lot of racist stuff involving this. I have seen people look at Chinese people in public in a scared or disgusted face. Which I don’t get, other than its racial discrimination. Since it started in China, people have started to bring back the racial discrimination. When I heard about the half Pakistani and half Chinese ten-year-old being bulled, it gave me a connection. I’m half afghani which is REALLY close to Pakistan and that’s also in Asia. So, I could imagine me in that situation. I would feel, like I was a mistake (yeah, I know, DARK).

In the hashtag station, I don’t know if you meant a BAD hashtag or a good one, so I’m doing a good one. #We are not just some type of virus! was that long? Well, what this means to me is that you can’t put the blame on something to one group of people! What I believe started the coronavirus is that people eat raw unchecked meat, and it makes them sick. I only know that because of my brother. My brother would tell/talk to me about the corona virus and how it happened, but sometimes he made racial jokes (which I don’t approve of!). Some people thought the corona BEER started the virus xD. People that are in the in the situation of this Coronavirus being pushed on to THEM, are people’s insecurities. Like the new word we were mentioned about Xenophobia, the fear of different people from unfamiliar country.

Almost everyone outside or their minds have this Xenophobia (okay maybe not). Back on the half Pakistani half Chines. It’s heartbreaking that people around my age, are bulling kids that did literally nothing! Getting beat up by the faces that once liked to talk, play, work together and just simply sit down and eat lunch together! People can’t remember, We ARE HUMAN TOO! Can’t we just GO somewhere without being racially discriminated? We all have life’s to, just because of our background does not have to do with us (unless your happy and proud of your culture, which is totally fine!). So singling people out of stuff does not make YOU Or anyone happy! It destroys confidence, in people, when they practice their religion. In my thoughts, people’s racial ways are coming back, it’s like all the racial discrimination apologies just…. disappear. Hope this virus (that had nothing to do with the civilians in china) is just a random thing that will go away, and not harm anyone else. Welp I have around 38 sentences, oop-, well…. I hope you have a good day I hope you stay healthy!

I can understand why some of these people are xenophobic or have xenophobia because the coronavirus is a worldwide pandemic and is killing many people across the world. But you can’t be scared of Chinese people just because it came from China. I would be scared of a person if it was conformed that they had the coronavirus and I still wouldn’t be trying to get away from them with all of my strength and might. Being racist against someone just because a deadly virus came from their country and some times it isn’t even their country it’s just their ethnicity. I have heard stories of white people beating up Chinese people just because they’re Chinese. i have just looked up the mortality rate of the coronavirus and it seems that the coronavirus keeps getting worse and worse to the point where the highest mortality rate is 4.9 % in wuhan and the website says “was” so I assume the mortality rate is climbing higher and higher. there was one story of a girls friend witnessing a white person ask two east Asian people wearing face masks “Do you have the China virus.” which I think is just plain racist. There is a half Pakistani-half Chinese 10 year old boy in Ontario that is bullied at school because of his Chinese background, that is very, very bad and I think that you shouldn’t be bulling anybody at all for anything especially for something like there is a virus that came from his country. I don’t think that means he has the virus, does it, so why are you bulling him for it, it just doesn’t make sense. There was a woman on a train in Sydney who had seen a Australian-Chinese woman who was carrying her child on the train. When a Australian woman came up to her and said things like go stand in the corner of the train because she was “spreading viruses” and “go cough over there you need to stop coughing, that’s how viruses spread”. People can’t just yell at you because they think you have the Coronavirus, the key word in that is “think” just because they are the same ethnicity as the people from the country where the virus came from, doesn’t mean that they themselves have the virus. After writing three separate stories, with all of them having chinese or part chinese people being the victims racial abuse and me putting my opinions after them. Every time I hear one of these stories it makes me think why are these people doing this, I mean this horrible because one of the stories has two people wearing face masks and you never know why they are wearing them, but the person just assumes that they have the Coronavirus. The other two stories have the people that are being bullied and yelled at, and they aren’t even fully Chinese they’re just half Chinese. All over the world people are contracting xenophobia and doing whatever they can to get Chinese people out of their country. There are tens of thousands of people in Singapore signing a petition banning Chinese people from entering their country which is ridiculous. It is super ridiculous because most of the Chinese population on Earth doesn’t have the Coronavirus and the people who do are being quarantined. There are pictures of people in Korea holding up signs saying to ban Chinese people from coming into their country, almost like a riot but to get Chinese people out instead of something else. I see a flaw with this plan because nowhere does it mention to let Chinese people back into these countries after the pandemic is over and we’ve found a cure for the Coronavirus. Anyway I hope everybody liked my blog post and goodbye.

The corona virus has caused the deaths of many people, and although multiple people are dying, there are other ways the corona virus is damaging this society, almost in a more painful way. I understand that this virus is a dangerous one, but that doesn’t mean that we must be racist. Just because the virus came from china does not mean that all Chinese people have the virus, in fact it makes absolutely no sense as to why we should have it. I’m Chinese but I haven’t been to China for years, it wouldn’t be possible for me to have it. Apparently, people still think so because otherwise, this type of stuff wouldn’t be happening. I think some of these people are simply using the corona virus as an excuse to be racist, these idiotic people who have decided to racist are taking advantage of this horrible disease (in a bad way). Which also relates to my hashtag “# why would you think I’m a virus?”. This racism is also powered by fear, the fear of getting the virus as well as fear of differences. This is called xenophobia, it’s the fear of other people that are different from yourself, more specifically the fear of people who are from different countries. This may be a stupid fear for some people while for others it may be a perfectly valid phobia, if you do have xenophobia it’s up to you to conquer this fear or let it control you, influencing your simplest of decisions. We aren’t born hating other people rather we are taught to hate, but we can also be taught to embrace others and welcome them like we would to our own family. That’s what I hope could happen to everyone. What these racist people is exactly the opposite of what I’m trying to get you to do, instead they are discriminating these east Asian people treating them differently for something that they did not even do. Besides not letting certain people do not go into your store is way overreacting. It’s good to take some precautions like wearing masks and coughing into a tissue, but restricting permission into a store is just wrong. If you want to take that many precautions than go ahead and close the shop, there are also people who are not east Asian who have the virus so don’t single us out. Its rude, its wrong and it’s also discriminatory, so please don’t do it. It’s also a stereotype that all Chinese people have the corona virus, there are different stereotypes as well like the one that say that black Canadians are all rappers. Things like that hurt other people, and they can really damage someone’s outlook towards other people. As well as stereotypes there are also different ways to show others that you dislike them, like making fun of their racial background and laughing at them behind there back. When my mom first told me about the virus, I thought that there might be some bulling because of it and apparently, I was right, people all around the country are being treated badly due to the virus, so as well as the virus affecting the body it’s also affecting people emotionally and socially. Various people are being bullied whether at school or at work, who said that adults couldn’t be bullied as well? Overall, I think that we should all be aware that this is happening and that not only is it physical it’s affecting the mind as well; we should all know that this is a racist and discriminatory act against Chinese people. Treating these people like this is not OK, it’s just wrong! So, I’m asking everyone to watch out for these things and not let being xenophobic become a daily habit.

In December of 2019, a respiratory virus called the 2019 Novel Coronavirus. A coronavirus gives you respiratory issues that can be fatal. The 2019 coronavirus started in a market in Wuhan, China. In the market there were animals that were sold for eating. Some of the animals were bats and snakes. Coronaviruses usually carried by animals and sometimes the coronaviruses are transmitted to humans. The cause of the 2019 coronavirus was from people eating bats in the market at Wuhan. The people who were infected started spreading the virus to other people. At first, only a few people died but, three months after the outbreak, over one thousand people died. The 2019 coronavirus became a health crisis and scientists are trying to quickly make a cure.
People are really scared about the 2019 coronavirus and people are starting to be racist to people of Chinese background because of the coronavirus. There are businesses that ban Chinese people from coming to get service because of the virus. There was this woman who was told to stay away from everyone on a train because the people thought she could give them the coronavirus. There was this child who was bullied for being half Chinese, some kids wanted him tested for the coronavirus just because for his ethnicity. There were also some Asian men that were wearing face masks and they were asked by someone of they had the coronavirus. Some person said that there were people coughing at their job and the manager told the Chinese employees not to come the next day.
Recently, the prime minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau gave a statement about the racism going around. I agree with that statement because it had a good message. Justin Trudeau said that we need to stop discrimination that is caused by fear. I think what Trudeau said has a good message and everyone should follow the principles of that statement.
Now for my opinion. I believe that nobody should be discriminated or harassed because of the coronavirus outbreak. Everyone should be treated equally and fairly. All businesses should let customers from all racial backgrounds to get service. Nobody should assume someone has the virus because of their ethnicity. These are tough times to be living through because the coronavirus causes stress and worry but we should stay calm and logical. If people are worried about the virus they can take precautions like washing their hands or not touching their face. If you stay clean your chances of getting sick are lower. We can prevent spread of germs by coughing into elbows. If you don’t feel well a good idea might be to visit the doctor.
To conclude, we need to be reasonable and not discriminate. We need to stay calm and stay clean. We need to seek help if we need it. If we all follow these principles, the world will be a better place.

My thoughts about this is that the white people are quick to create and spread stereotypes about East Asians, and that they shouldn’t be creating so many stereotypes about the Chinese. The stereotypes have a negative impact on our community and are having a negative impact on Chinese people as people are asking them if they have Coronavirus, or doing something related to . It is also really stupid to think that only the Chinese will have the coronavirus, just because it originated in China. The coronavirus is bad enough and people are making stereotypes about the Chinese, which is worsening the situation and causing more xenophobia to spread. The coronavirus is scary, but that doesn’t allow people to be racist towards the Chinese and act like they are infected with the coronavirus when they are showing zero symptoms of even having the coronavirus, and have people move away from them and make fun of them. The xenophobia has affected the Chinese more than the coronavirus has affected the world, and it’s time to stop.

  22. teran2 says:

My opinion on the coronavirus is that people are overreacting. People are being discriminatory and racist towards Asian people and especially the Chinese. This is because the coronavirus started in China. Personally, I think that this is racist behavior. I feel that Canada should be a place where people are excepted and welcome but unfortunately that is not happening.

This Coronavirus is causing a lot of racism to happen in country’s all over the world including Canada. This is causing people to make discriminatory acts. Myself I would not make such a big deal out of it, but some other people might make a big deal of it and make a scene, or they might beat someone up who is Chinese. People are being harassed and made fun of, hurtful jokes are being made towards Chinese people as well. Some people also might be being racist because they have Xenophobia which is a dislike of a certain country or culture. It seems to be that some people are assuming that all Chinese have the Coronavirus or are carrying it. Chinese people all over the world are being stereotyped. An example of the discrimination that is happening is that if a Chinese person coughed, someone would say do you have the Coronavirus, and if someone with a different heritage would cough, they really wouldn’t care. Some parents are even pulling their children out of schools because other children in their class have travelled to China. The parents are automatically assuming that these kids have the Coronavirus. Another example of Xenophobia that is happening to Chinese Canadians and Chinese people all over the world is that people are avoiding their businesses. A lot of people have stopped shopping at Chinese owned stores, as well as stopping eating at Chinese restaurants. This is there for affecting their livelihood.

This racial discrimination should not be tolerated. This is not right or fair to the Chinese community.

If you didn’t know how this started it was from china and was caused by animals mostly bats going to humans. After it’s passed through planes, and boats to countries. That was a brief history about it now to my opinions. This is probably the hardest blog we have done. Both are very rude and dangerous things, but we can only choose one the one I would choose both. The reason why is because people had been doing racist stereotypes, and Racial Discrimination. And because of this people have committed suicide. I may only say about xenophobia and racial discrimination but on the other perspective the coronavirus is as dangerous it also includes the xenophobia but on top of the volcano, an erupting fire of corona kills people and cause more racist acts because of some people having the disease. Only adults are treated like this. Even some kids are too because they have Chinese blood 100%,50%, 25% etc. people still treat them all the same. People are so cautious of their surroundings they will even judge them by what they’re wearing. When people judge by culture because they’re Chinese they don’t know that other culture can get diseases too! But I chose both because when disease spread news to. And both need each other to be the worst virus, disease etc. For the disease why are Chinese /black people are the most xenophobia not a lot are afraid of white, or brown peoples and stereotypes also revolve around Asian people. This may be weird, but I have never or haven’t been treated like I am a virus even when going to stores no one looks or mumbles abut s#$ty stupid man or boy. IF its like any racist stereotypes then that is also a no. I’ve only heard about people being treated racist and it was only today I remembered about hearing about this. A question I found at the back ally of a blog was why do east Asian are treated xenophobia? Well my answer is because of the first nations color and maybe white stands for holy while a dark color is like the Satan 666 and death. I don’t think this the right answer, but it is the closest thing I can come up with. This disease is so dangerous you would need a card where you want to go and it’s like an airplane checkout. And hygiene EVERY day. But which one is worse? xenophobia or coronavirus? Both are as dangerous. Here’s my hashtag:#We are all the same.

Unfortunately, there are many things going on around the world, some of which are good, and some are bad. Today, we will be focusing on two things that are not very good. Recently, a new virus came out and has affected many people. This virus is called the Coronavirus and is quite dangerous these days since there is no cure yet. As many people know, this virus started in Wuhan, Hubei, China and has killed many people around the world. This virus has spread almost all around the world putting thousands of people in danger. Many people are suffering from this virus, and nurses are trying their best to save as many lives as possible. The main cause of this virus was from eating all sorts of different foods, such as different raw meats but mostly bats. This was because many of these animals already had different sicknesses and diseases, and since they weren’t cooked, the diseases easily transmitted to humans. Just because this virus started in China, people started to be highly racist to people of Asian/Chinese background. Many people are restricting East-Asians (or people of Asian backgrounds) form going into their shops/businesses, and workplaces. My thoughts about the situation going on about racism, and so far new, deadly, virus, are that both these problems are sad and are making other people feel unwelcomed. Many people might say that the coronavirus is far worse than Racism or Xenophobia because its deadly, or other points related to that, but it is not. Imagine how the people that are receiving offensive comments everyday feel. They probably feel hurt and unwanted, like nobody cares about them. So far, I have not noticed/witnessed any discrimination about the Coronavirus, and I hope I do not either. I think that East-Asians are being targeted the most about this virus because the virus started in East-Asia, specifically a small town in China called Wuhan. Unfortunately, people are starting to assume that if somebody had an East-Asian background they had the Coronavirus. In my opinion, I think that what Justin Tredeau said was very important because he mentioned that Canada is no place for discrimination or racism. He made a point that Canadians should trust each other and care for one another. Because of all the racism and the stereotyping, many Asian started making hashtags trying to prove others wrong, one example that somebody did was #iamnotavirus. If I was to start a movement about this, a hashtag that I would mention would be, #imnotdanger. How do you feel about this entire situation? What would you do if somebody was doing this to you? If you were going to start a movement, what would your hashtag be?

I think that just because you are the same background as a religion doesn’t mean that you have the same things as your background has. I think that this act is very racist to the Chinese people and offensive to almost anyone if this was your religion. I think that the people who did this is very rude and disgusting because if a religion has a sickness doesn’t mean all of them have it. The virus is spreading across the world so I think that they should not do this. Some of these people are doctors and should be helping make a cure but they are just wasting time criticizing this group. The doctors who are doing this should be fired IMMEDIATELY because they are just criticizing. The boy that is being bullied because he is Chinese is just trying to live a life but then random racist kids are just bullying him. I think that these kids should be suspended for 3 days for being racist and rude. I feel like that if the kids who were bulling the boy had the corona virous it would be karma. I don’t think that these people should be talking and technically making fun of this because it is a very big problem. I think that there are many people trying to help but some people like these are just ruining it. Some people these days shouldn’t even be doing these things. On one of the documents it says that there are countries saying Chinese to not come to their country. This is very stereotypical because these people are doing it because the outbreak started in china. I think that we should all be careful but not do this. When a kid is just playing a game with his friend then I think that you shouldn’t just bug them because it really gets annoying. Mostly because you are criticizing a religion then they would get very mad at you. The kids who were saying this to this kid is very annoying if it was my religion. I think that the world should just support these people and don’t do things like this to them. I think that some people don’t get it that they are doing something wrong until they are told on. The doctor in this case is an adult and is being racist. Sometimes I think that adults just don’t get what they are doing. So I think that they should just not do it. The coronavirus is when of the worst things in 2020.
Wait, am I wrong. What could possibly be worse. The racism behind the coronavirus is much more destroying then the coronavirus it self. The coronavirus originated in Wuhan in China. Ithink that people are over reacting. If you come from the place that has the virus, does that mean they are to. The people are accusing them of being part of the virus. This is what comes to my mind when I hear about this. Xenophobia, is the word that comes to me at this point. In china if you were going to hang out with a sick person, there is a posibility you might get the Coronavirus. Does that mean that Chineses people are threat to people? I can understand they were scared about the virus because it has killed over 1,300 people and the numbers are climbing and over 600, 000 people are in quarantine. That is still not a good enough excuse. Why would you blame someone for something they were not even involved in. It is just not fair. #itsnottheirfault The 2019 novel coronavirus, should be dominating, but right now it is not the worst thing. The incident on the bus was very suprising. I thought that they would someone else. It is stupid really, Why would someone ask another person, “do you have the CHINESE virus.” First of all, I do not think your supposed to ask someone if they are sick. Second of all, Why are you calling it the Chinese virus. It is not the chinese people’s faults. I keep on saying the same things, they are not to be blamed is my message. They have no blame. The hypocrites who think they are so cool by being racist shuold get some help. Once again #itsnottheir fault.
