Hello everyone!

Here are your morning announcements from Mrs. Field!

#1. Reading:

  1. RazKids: read 1-2 stories and complete the questions
  2. MySciLearn: finish your second story of the week
  3. Epic Books: read for enjoyment after you have completed the rest of your work

#2. Language Arts: Just like Monday, you will choose a fiction, picture book from home. If you don’t have a book or can’t decide on a book, I have assigned Show and Tell, by Robert Munsch under assignments in Epic Books. When you have finished reading a book, complete this worksheet and submit it on Teams under Assignments.

#3. Math:

  • Grade 2’s: Here is another sheet for 2 digit subtraction. On the second sheet there is a dot to dot. Use the answers in order as the numbers to connect the dots with.       Worksheets 1 & 2
  • Grade 3’s:  On the first worksheet you will look at the array and make 2 multiplication sentences by flipping the factors. For example, it there are 3 rows with 7 in each row, I would write 3 x 7 = 21 and 7 x 3 = 21. On the second sheet, you will create an array and a multiplication sentences. For example, if the box says 4 rows of 5, I would draw that and then write 4 x 5 = 20.      Worksheets 1 & 2

#4. Physical Health: Please choose an activity or two to complete 30 minutes of exercise today.

#5.  Art: (for fun! optional!)  Today the drawing lesson is with a different artist.  Draw With Rob is going to show you how to draw a sloth! If you would like to share a drawing with the class, please ask a parent to email me (Mrs. Leroux) your picture and I will put it into the Gallery.  Have a look in the Gallery to see all the drawings that are already there!

Have a great day!

Mrs. Leroux

Wednesday, June 10th

Good morning students! Please join Mrs. Nicoll for a Zoom chat at 1:00 today. The link to join is on Teams.

Here are your morning announcements from Division 6!

#1. Reading:

  • RazKids: read 1-2 stories and complete the questions
  • MySciLearn: start your second story of the week
  • Epic Books: read for enjoyment after you have completed the rest of your work

#2. Math:

  • Grade 2’s: You will work on 2 digit subtraction with regrouping. That means that you might not have enough in the 1’s place and will need to borrow from the 10’s place. Remember, the number on top has to be bigger than the bottom. If it’s not, you will have to borrow. On the first sheet the boxes at the top are for writing the new number if you need to borrow.    Worksheets 1 & 2
  • Grade 3’s: You will continue to work with arrays. An array means taking a number and making equal columns and rows. On the first sheet the rows are made for you, on the second sheet you will need to multiply by counting the rows and how many is in each row. To learn a little more about arrays,  watch this video.      Worksheet 1 & 2

#3. Music: Please join Mr. Smith at 2:30 for your weekly Zoom music class. The link is posted under the Music channel on Teams.

#4.  Art: (for fun! optional!)  Today you can learn to draw a  realistic bunny.. If you would like to share a drawing with the class, please ask a parent to email me (Mrs. Leroux) your picture and I will put it into the Gallery.  Have a look in the Gallery to see all the drawings that are already there!

Tuesday, June 9th

Good morning class! Please note that Mr. Smith’s music classes have permanently moved to Wednesday as he is teaching on Tuesdays.

Here are your morning announcements from Ms. Hall and Ms. Vesa.

#1. Reading:

  • RazKids: read 1-2 stories and complete the questions
  • MySciLearn: complete your first story of the week
  • Epic Books: read for enjoyment after you have completed the rest of your work

#2. Language Arts: Today you can choose any story book of your choice. It can be from Raz-Kids, Reading Assistant, Epic Books or even a real book that you have at home! If you don’t have a book or can’t decide on one that you would like to read, please read Angela’s Airplane, by Robert Munsch. I have added it to Assignments in Epic books. When you have finished reading the book please complete this reading log.  On the reading log you will be asked for a variety of information from the book cover and from the story. One section asks for important words, these can be words that were important in the story or words that you learned from the book. You will also need to write about the setting (where the story takes place), the problem (in most books the character(s) have a problem to solve) and then the solution (how was the problem solved). Finally you can write about your favourite part! Please hand in your paper on Teams when you are finished.

#3. Math: There are a few students in our class who have been using IXL for extra math practice. Unfortunately, our free trail has ended, so you will not be able to access the site anymore. Math Playground is a great site for fun math games.

  • Grade 2’s: Once again you are doing 2 digit addition with regrouping. The second page is teaching you a different way to add. You will add up the one’s column, the ten’s column and then add the two together.   Worksheets 1 & 2
  • Grade 3’s: In today’s work you will be filling in a multiplication chart. We have learned that multiplication and repeated addition are the same. When you are filling in the chart, count by the number you are multiplying. For example, if I’m multiplying by 2’s, I am also counting by 2’s. I would count 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12…. Multiplication is all about memorization. Watch this video for a few songs and tricks to learning multiplication. Worksheets 1 & 2

#4. Physical Education: It is supposed to rain all day today. If you can’t get outside, please do one of the following:

#5.  Art: (for fun! optional!)  Today you can learn to draw a hedgehog..If you would like to share a drawing with the class, please ask a parent to email me (Mrs. Leroux) your picture and I will put it into the Gallery.  Have a look in the Gallery to see all the drawings that are already there!

Monday, June 8th

Good morning Division 8! I hope you had a restful and fun weekend.

Here are your morning announcements from Ms. Hall and Ms. Vesa.

#1. Reading:

  • RazKids: read 1-2 stories and complete the questions
  • MySciLearn: read your first story of the week
  • Epic Books: read for enjoyment after you have completed the rest of your work
  • Connect to the library link at the top of the blog and listen to Mrs. Field’s weekly story

#2. Math: Grade 2’s will continue to review two digit addition and subtraction this week, while the grade 3’s will continue to work on multiplication.

  • Grade 2’s: On the first sheet you will find a 1 digit problem written horizontally. They have taken the numbers from the 1’s column and are asking you to solve it above the question. Once you have added the 1’s column, write the number vertically on the 2 digit addition problem. Worksheets 1 & 2
  • Grade 3’s: In your work today you will continue to relate multiplication to repeated addition. On the first sheet, solve the repeated addition question and the multiplication question, then draw a line to connect the the two that are the same. For example, if the problem 5 + 5 + 5=15 is the same as 5 x 3=15, I would draw a line to connect them. On the second sheet, it asks you to use counters. If you need to, find small objects to add with, but first try it without counters. Worksheets 1 & 2

#3. Ms. Quan is Retiring: After nearly 30 years of teaching, Ms. Quan is retiring this year! We are putting together a book from the students. If you had Ms. Quan as a teacher, please complete this sheet. If you did not have Ms. Quan as a teacher and would like to wish her a Happy Retirement with some suggestions for activities she may enjoy with her free time, you too may also complete this sheet.  You can send your finished sheets to Mrs. Nicoll through email. Shhh, it’s a secret!

#4. P.E.: Try this 30 minute workout with various dance routines from Kidz Bop Dance . This has Fight Song and other familiar songs.

#5.  Art: (for fun! optional!)  Today we draw a dolphin. If you would like to share a drawing with the class, please ask a parent to email me (Mrs. Leroux) your picture and I will put it into the Gallery.  Have a look in the Gallery to see all the drawings that are already there!

Have a magical Monday,

Mrs. Nicoll

Friday, June 5th

Hello Everyone! Today is World Environment Day!

Here are your morning announcements from Ms. Hall.

The Burnaby Public Library is doing “paper bag pickup” for borrowing library books. Follow the link and start borrowing books again!

#1. Reading:

  1. RazKids: read 1-2 stories and complete the questions
  2. MySciLearn: read your third story of the week
  3. Epic Books: read for enjoyment after you have completed the rest of your work
  4. There are 3 different books to listen to on Mrs. Field’s library blog.  Have you listened to all of them?

#2. Math:  Today is “catch up” day! However, we are in the classroom with some of the grade 3’s tomorrow and they will be completing some math worksheets. It is your choice to complete this work. In this assignment students will understand that multiplying by numbers is the same a counting by that number. For example, counting by 5’s goes 5, 10 ,15, 20, 25, 30, 35… If I multiply 5 x 5 it is the same answer as the fifth number when counting by 5’s. Students will also understand an array. Please listen to this lesson to understand an array. On the second worksheet, you will use the arrays and form different groups with the same amount in each group.    Worksheet 1 & 2

Please make sure you have completed all of your math from this week.  Choose 4 pages of math to submit to Teams in the “June 1-5 Math” assignment folder.

#3. Physical Health: Please choose an activity or two to complete 30 minutes of exercise today.

  • get outside into the sunshine to walk, bike, play basketball or ???
  • Go Noodle
  • PE with Joe : To honour World Environment Day, PE Joe is exercising in a panda suit!
  • Cosmic Kids Yoga

#4.  Art: (for fun! optional!)  Today we draw a monarch butterfly. If you would like to share a drawing with the class, please ask a parent to email me (Mrs. Leroux) your picture and I will put it into the Gallery.  Have a look in the Gallery to see all the drawings that are already there!

Have a wonderful weekend!
Mrs. Leroux

Thursday, June 4th

Good Morning Everyone!

Here are your morning announcements from Ms. Hall!  Watch for some people popping in!

#1. Reading:

  1. RazKids: read 1-2 stories and complete the questions
  2. MySciLearn: finish your second story of the week
  3. Epic Books: read for enjoyment after you have completed the rest of your work

#2. Writing: You will work on your paragraph about The Little Red Bird. You will need to decide if you think the bird should go home to his cage or stay free. Once you have made your decision, you will need to go back to your chart from Tuesday. The reasons you have given will be the body (otherwise known as the middle of your paragraph). You will need to start with a topic sentence, then give your reasons in the body, and finish with a concluding sentence. Your topic sentence needs to share your opinion. Once you share your reasons in the body, you will need a concluding sentence. Remember, a concluding sentence should say your topic in a different way and with more details. Take a look at my example below. You will see my topic sentence first, then the body of my paragraph, and the last sentence is my conclusion. Use the writing sheet and if you need more room, use the next writing sheet. Please upload your paragraph into Assignment on Teams when you are done.

#3. Math: For the next few weeks, the grade 3’s will be moving into multiplication. Grade 2’s don’t need to know multiplication yet, but of course you’re welcome to try! Grade 2’s will continue to review addition and subtraction with regrouping (borrowing).

  • Grade 2’s: You will continue to add 2 digit numbers together. If you wish to do the multiplication sheets, you don’t have to do these sheets!  Worksheet 1 & 2
  • Grade 3’s: Today you will be learning about multiplication. Multiplication is the same as adding groups together with the same number. For example, there are 18 kids in the class. If I put kids together in groups of 2, I know that 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 18. This is called repeated addition. Instead of writing all that adding, I could count how many groups of 2 there are. There are 9 groups of 2, so 2 x 9 = 18. Watch these short videos:  video 1    video 2  Now that you understand how adding and multiplying are similar, complete worksheets 1 & 2

#4. Physical Health: Please choose an activity or two to complete 30 minutes of exercise today.

  • in between the raindrops, get outside into the fresh air for a walk or bike ride
  • Go Noodle
  • PE with Joe : Around the World Workout!!  So fun!
  • Cosmic Kids Yoga

#5.  Art: (for fun! optional!)  Today  in honour of kindness to all, I have chosen a directed drawing of heart hands,  If you would like to share a drawing with the class, please ask a parent to email me (Mrs. Leroux) your picture and I will put it into the Gallery.  Have a look in the Gallery to see all the drawings that are already there!

Have a great day!

Mrs. Leroux

Wednesday, June 3rd

Good Morning Division 8. Please join Mrs. Leroux for a Zoom meeting at 1:00. The link will be posted on Teams. I have added 2 more handwriting letters if you have been working on these.

Here are your morning announcements from Division 6!

#1. Reading:

  • RazKids: read 1-2 stories and complete the questions
  • MySciLearn: start your second story of the week
  • Epic Books: read for enjoyment after you have completed the rest of your work

#2. Math: Today we will be learning about capacity. Capacity is the amount of liquids that fit into a space. We learned in Science earlier this year that liquids take on the form of the object they are in. For example, if I have a carton of apple juice, it juice takes the shape of the carton. If I spill the liquid, it takes the shape of the table or counter and will probably make a big mess! Different containers hold a different amount of liquid. For example, I could not pour a jug of milk into a glass. It would not fit and would make a big mess!

  • Grade 2: Your work involves moving liquid from one container to another. You will need to decide if there is more than, less than, or the same  amount of liquid in both containers. You could take this work one step further and try moving liquids from one container to another (with parent’s help).      Worksheet 1 & 2
  • Grade 3: We measure capacity in litres (L) and millilitres (mL). Take a look at a carton of milk or juice. You will see the volume of a container at the bottom of the object. Litres is much bigger than millilitres. 1000 mL = 1 L. On the first worksheet, you will need to do some math to figure out the answers to question 3 -6. In question 3c you will need to add up 4 containers of B. We know B measures 3L, so 4 containers would be 3 +3 + 3 + 3 (or 3 x 4). Once I have that answer, I need to figure out what 3 containers of C is. I know C measures 2L, so 3 containers would be 2 + 2 +2  (or 2 x 3). Once I know both answers, I can compare them. You will need to put your thinking caps on for today’s work!  Worksheet 1 & 2

#3. Music: Please join Mr. Smith at 2:30 for your weekly Zoom music class. The link is posted under the Music channel on Teams.

#4. P.E.: Try this at home workout!

#5.  Art: (for fun! optional!)  Today there are two drawing lessons: drawing  tulips and drawing a dragon! Pick one or do them both! If you would like to share a drawing with the class, please ask a parent to email me (Mrs. Leroux) your picture and I will put it into the Gallery.  Have a look in the Gallery to see all the drawings that are already there!

Tuesday, June 2nd

Good morning students! I hope you got out and enjoyed the beautiful day outside yesterday.

Here are your morning announcements from Ms. Hall.

#1. Reading:

  • RazKids: read 1-2 stories and complete the questions
  • MySciLearn: complete your first story of the week
  • Epic Books: read for enjoyment after you have completed the rest of your work

#2. Writing: Listen to the story, Little Red Bird, by Nick Bruel . The story ends with a question, “I wonder what you would do?” On this  Worksheet write at least 3 reasons why the bird should stay in the cage and three reasons why the bird should stay outside. As you’re writing this, think about what you would do. On Thursday, we will complete this writing assignment with your opinion.

#3 Math: We will continue working on mass today. Remember mass is another word for weight.

  • Grade 2’s: On the first sheet, draw a balance scale and the object (the best you can do). Tilt the balance scale down to the heavier side. On the second sheet, count the number of items that equal the same weight as an apple.  Worksheets 1 &2
  • Grade 3’s: Today you will continue learning about kilograms (kg) and grams (g). Remember that a gram is much smaller than a kilogram. 1000 grams = 1 kilogram. To understand a kilogram, remember that 1 kg = 2.2 pounds. On many of the questions, you will need to look at the mass of the objects in the pictures to figure out the math.  Worksheets 1 &2

#4. P.E.:  Try this at home workout!

#5.  Art: (for fun! optional!) Art for Kids    Today’s art lesson: draw a taco for Taco Tuesday! If you would like to share a drawing with the class, please ask a parent to email me (Mrs. Leroux) your picture and I will put it into the Gallery.  Have a look in the Gallery to see all the drawings that are already there!

Have a terrific Tuesday,

Mrs. Nicoll

Monday, June 1st

Good morning Montecito! It’s amazing to think that June is here!!

Here are your morning announcements from Ms. Hall.

Parents, can you please have a look at these lost and found items?! If something belongs to your child please let us know and we will put it with their belongings.

#1. Reading: Would these 10 students please complete the Flight Check on Raz-Kids: Andy, Atticus, Daniel, Ella, Ernie, Grayson, Heloisa, Lucya, Mariam and Vicky! It will take less than 5 minutes! The instructions are on Monday, May 25th’s blog.

  • RazKids: read 1-2 stories and complete the questions
  • MySciLearn: read your first story of the week
  • Epic Books: read for enjoyment after you have completed the rest of your work

#2. Math: Today you will be learning about weight or mass (they mean the same thing). Earlier in the year you learned about matter. Everything on Earth is made of matter (gas, liquids and solids) and all matter has mass.

  • Grade 2’s: Normally we would use balance scales to compare the weight of an object. You probably don’t have a balance scale at home, so watch this video to find out how to use a balance scale. Next, complete Worksheet 1 &2
  • Grade 3’s: While we commonly use pounds to measure our weight, it is part of the imperial system used by the United States. In Canada, and many other countries throughout the world, we use the metric system. Grams and kilograms are a part of the metric system. There are 1000 grams in 1 kilogram. I kilogram is equal to 2.2 pounds. Watch this video to learn more about mass. For today’s work, please read each question carefully.  Worksheet 1 & 2

#3. Writing: This is the first of 3 lessons this week for another persuasive writing piece. Take a look at the difference between a fact and an opinion, and what it means to persuade.

Today you will sort the squares in the sheets below into facts and opinions. You could print, cut and sort the papers into two groups, write the facts and opinions in two columns, or sort them orally (by telling the answers to a parent or older sibling).

Sheet 1      Sheet 2       Sheet 3

#4. Library: Connect to the library link at the top and listen to Mrs. Field’s weekly story reading.

#5. P.E.: Stay active and choose an activity for the day:

#6.  Art: (for fun-optional!) Art for Kids    Today’s art lesson: draw a shark! If you would like to share a drawing with the class, please ask a parent to email me (Mrs. Leroux) your picture and I will put it into the Gallery.  Have a look in the Gallery to see all the drawings that are already there!

Thursday, May 28th

Good Morning Division 8!

Please enjoy the morning announcement presented by Mrs. Lusignan and Ms. Mihaylova (Ms. Vesa).

Join Mrs. Leroux at 10:30 on Zoom.  The link can be found in the posts on Teams.  We will be brainstorming ideas for our next writing assignment by talking about how to protect our health and the health of others during Covid. Brainstorming notes will be posted on this blog following the 10:30 Zoom meeting.

#1. Writing: During our Zoom meeting at 10:30 we will brainstorm a list of healthy practices during the Covid pandemic.  I would like you to record your ideas on the attached Worksheet In the first sentence I would like you to choose and write two ways that you can protect your own health. In the second sentence I would like you to choose and write two ways that you can help to protect the health of others. In the third sentence, please choose one skill that you think you could get better at and then explain why you should get better at it or how you could improve. When finished, please upload your writing assignment to Teams in the Personal and Social Responsibility Assignment folder.  This assignment is due by Friday.

#2. Reading:

  • RazKids: read 1-2 stories and complete the questions
  • MySciLearn: read your second story of the week
  • Epic Books: read for enjoyment after you have completed the rest of your work

#3. Math: Yesterday you learned about perimeter. Perimeter is measuring the distance around an object. Today you will be learning about the area of a object. Area is the space an object takes up. For example, if I have a yard that needs grass, I would need to figure out the area of the yard. If I wanted to put a fence around it, I would need to know the perimeter.

  • Grade 2’s: On the first worksheet, count the cubes that cover an area, and write the answer. Do the same on the second sheet, but imagine how many cubes would fill the space.  Worksheet 1 &2
  • Grade 3’s: On the first sheet, count the squares to find out the perimeter and area of each object. The instructions say to use a ruler, but you don’t need one. Just count the squares as 1 cm. On the second sheet, colour each object the colour that matches the perimeter and area of each object. Worksheet 1 & 2

#4. Physical Health: Please choose an activity or two to complete 30 minutes of exercise today.

  • learn a few tap steps!
  • get outside for a walk or bike ride
  • Go Noodle
  • PE with Joe : a new video
  • Cosmic Kids Yoga

#5.  Art: (for fun-optional!) Art For Kids Today’s art lesson: draw an ice cream cone! If you would like to share a drawing with the class, please ask a parent to email me (Mrs. Leroux) your picture and I will put it into the Gallery.  Have a look in the Gallery to see all the drawings that are already there!

Have a great day off tomorrow and a fabulous weekend!!
