Good morning class!

Here are your morning announcements from Division 6

To celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day on Sunday, June 21st,  we will be sharing facts and music from the Canadian Indigenous Peoples:

  • British Columbia alone is home to 60% of Indigenous languages in Canada. In our province there are 34 distinct languages involving 61 dialects.
  • Not all Indigenous peoples do Pow Wows, potlatches, smudges or sweats.
  • There are 634 recognized nations in Canada and 3,100 Reserves. The nation refers to the people and the reserve refers to the land.
  • Buffy Sainte-Maire was born as Beverly Sainte-Marie on Feb. 20, 1941, on the Piapot Cree Indigenous reserve in the Qu’Appelle Valley, Saskatchewan. Sainte-Marie’s fearless social commentary and advocating for Indigenous issues, both in her songs and in her life, have earned her many devoted fans and the respect of her musical peers.
