Scholastics: 20 day curriculum to get learning started at home

Reading Resources

Here is a list of reading resources that was released this morning by Tanis Anderson, Burnaby’s Literacy Consultant:

For classrooms who have been exploring Daily 5, Gail Boushey co-author of Daily 5, has created a set of videos for parents.  These videos talk about ways to increase students’ reading stamina at home:

In the fall, we had Kristine Mraz present, and many teachers attended this conference.  She has created a learning through play package, and you will find it here:

Many schools use LLI, and here, Fountas and Pinnell have some suggestions as to how to support learners:

We have been engaged in SEL in our district for many years, and this year, Miriam Miller and Nicole Wilson facilitated a series on weaving SEL through the curriculum.  Nicole created a SEL Challenge for her students, and has graciously offered to share it:

Finally, I have put together a list of online literacy options out there, that I will continue to add to:

There are a few other things to check out on the literacy blog.  On the right, there is a tab called “learning at home” and if you click on it, it will take you to all that I have posted.

Dress Code for the Museum of Ancient Wonders

Good evening Parents and Guradians of Division 1,

The students decided today that we would be wearing formal dress for our museum exhibit this Friday. The expectation is that students are dressed in more formal dresswear, which includes collar shirts, blouses, dresses, dress pants, skirts, etc.

If students do not own any formal dress clothing, the class decided they were to wear a white top (which refrains from large logos or pictures) and black bottoms.

Please help your child prepare and dress appropriately Friday, November 15th.

Just a reminder that the museum is open for tours to parents and friends between 9:30-10:30, 11:00-12:00, and 1:15-3:00, and open for just a walkthrough at lunch and after school until 4 pm. We hope that you will be able to come take a look at the hard work of Division 1 and explore some of the students learning about Ancient Civilizations. The students were sent home with a yellow letter last friday, which outlined the procedures and expectations for the day.

Please let me know if you have any questions,

Thank you for your continued support,

Elixa Neumann

Burnaby Art Gallery

Our venture to the Burnaby Art Gallery was a great hit today! Students learned about the differences between painting, drawing, and print making, while exploring samples from the Italian Renaissance. Afterwards, the students were able to make their own print creations in the art studio.

Thank you to all of our parent volunteers who helped us manage the late buses and fun activities! Your help and support is greatly appreciated.

Museum of Ancient Wonders – COMING SOON!

Over the past month, our class has been studying three specific Ancient Civilizations: Mesopotamia, Ancient Egypt, and Ancient Greece. Each student has spent a great deal of time examining and researching an element of their civilization. Students have built reports, outlining the depth of their research. As we move into our Archaeological Museum, the students are preparing their artifacts and oral presentations to share with the class and school community.

Our Museum of Ancient Wonders will November 15th, 2019. Students will be presenting their artifacts and research to our school community from 9:30-10:30, 11:00-12:00, and 1:15-2:45. Parents, family, and friends are welcome to come by for a museum tour during the day, or if you are unavailable during the day, the museum will be open for visitation without student presenters from 3:00-4:00. Students are not expected to remain after school.

We hope to see you at our museum! Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you for all of your continual support to help our students in their inquiry.

Happy Long Weekend!
