Teaching Tips:
- start slow and do what is manageable
- follow your child’s lead
- everything you do at home with your child is a learning opportunity for them
- be patient
- it’s OK to make mistakes, it means you are learning and your child is learning
- ask your child questions….about anything and everything, they love to talk!
- listen to your child, really listen, with your whole body, hands still, your eyes on them
- give your child time, it takes them longer to do everything
- if you are trying to do an activity with your child and they are not cooperating – do something else
- ask them what they want to do
- your child is not being “bad” they are expressing their frustration best as they know how
- it’s not your fault, breathe and distract them with something they like to do
- go for a walk
- give them a bubble bath
- cuddle on the couch, play with them
- when they are playing, they are learning
- limit screen time and worksheets
- do a little reading every day – in any language – read a book, signs on the street, mail fliers, stuff online
- do a little drawing and writing every day- draw with them, you write a word, have them copy the word, copy words on grocery items in the kitchen
- have them cook with you
- ask them how they are feeling, tell them how you are feeling
- give hugs
- dance together
