Bonjour!

It was wonderful meeting everyone over the last few days. Many families had questions about how they might incorporate more French into their home lives and how they might support their children in learning French when they were not fluent either. This is SO important! Parents and families play a vital role in their child’s language development,  particularly in a French Immersion program. It is work for all of the family!

Some ideas:

  • When reading your child’s library book with them: try to read the picture story with your child, ask them to find various French letters on each page (“Can you find all of the “Aah” in your story? What about the letter that makes the sound “Ch”?) or try reading the story!
  • Add French to your daily routines “Do you need to go au toilette before we go?” “Would you like to drink some l’eau or jus?” “What couleur will you wear today?” (rouge, orange, jaune, vert, bleu, rose, violet, noir, blanc…) etc
    • I will be posting vocabulary as we learn it under Vocabulary
  • Under “Interesting Links” you can find some digital literacy games, stories and activities. I would like to highlight the links for Radio Canada Jeunesse (where you can watch a good selection of French children’s shows) and the link for TumbleBooks (if you access it through the Sperling catalogue, you have free access to both French and English read alouds)
  • Read your child’s song and poem book regularly with your child

Bonjour!

I have been asked by a few families about whether I could provide some French alphabet sound pronunciation tips to help when reading simple stories with your child. I have attached below a document with phonemic sound pronunciation of each letter as well as a couple of youtube videos to help! The children will begin learning the French “Alphabet Rap” next week and it will be going into their poem/song duotang, which will be going back and forth between home and school weekly.

Bienvenue!

Welcome to our kindergarten blog!

I hope that everyone had a wonderful summer, taking time to enjoy the outdoors and time with friends and family in this beautiful weather. I spent the first part of my summer teaching summer school and spending time hiking and exploring our beautiful city. The later half of my summer was spent paddle boarding, kayaking, swimming and hiking while I camped in the beautiful Okanagan Valley and spent time at my cabin on Pender Island. This past week has been spent getting our learning space ready for your tiny young learners (and preparing my own house with freezer meals and quick snacks)! It is always an exciting week for me where I get to consider the potential projects and experiences that the space will provide when the children arrive.

It is such a special time for your family when your child gets to come to kindergarten, and I thank you for giving me the gift of spending my days learning with your children.

Please be sure to check this space each week as I add photos, stories and notes about our week. I will also post songs, poems, newsletters, recipes that we have made, interesting articles about educational practices and other classroom related stuff here!

I can’t wait to meet everyone again!

Merci,

Mme Rachel
