Touching Spirit Bear by Ben Mikaelsen

This year we started a new novel called Touching Spirit Bear. It is about a teenager named Cole Matthews. (The bold text are things I think are important) 😉

Recap: Cole has an alcoholic for a father who beats him up all the time and his mother  is just a pretty lady who does nothing when Cole`s dad is hurting him. But Cole has a very bad reputation at the moment. After all, it’s his fault…right? He beat up Peter Driscal, broke into a hardware store, been in at least a dozen police stations, been through just as many counsellors, a psychologist, several detention centres and 2 residential treatment centres. Now he has gotten into Circle Justice, a healing form of justice practised by natives for thousands of years. He thinks if he does this, he won’t have to go to jail. But he is no where close to the truth.

Question 1: Was banishing Cole a good idea?

I think that banishing Cole was a good and bad idea. It was good because it gives Cole time to get all his anger out and have some time alone. Also, the a`ttow that Garvey gave Cole, I think Garvey was not a very good kid. Maybe it helped him when he was younger so he is giving it to Cole now in hope that he will be good. However, it is also a bad thing because maybe all he needs is somebody to talk to, somebody who gets what he is going through. Maybe if he had somebody, he would be more happy and positive.

Question 2: What does Cole`s escape plan have to do with the solar system?

In order to get away from the island, Cole has to swim out. But every time he tries, he gets pulled back because the tide is working against him. When the sun, moon, and Earth are aligned with each other (usually when there is a new or full moon), the solar tide has an effect on the lunar tide, which makes extra-high high tides, and very low, low tides.

Here are some of my favourite quotes from the book so far:

Anger is energy and energy is life.” -Cole

” The whole world is a hot dog.” -Garvey

I was dying and I hadn’t even lived.” -Cole

” No more chances.” -Peter’s Lawyer

”You caught me off guard!” -Cole

Those are just a few of my favourite quotes. I will probably refer to some quotes in my writing later in the year 🙂

Cole’s Banishment

We have been reading Touching Spirit Bear and the main character,Cole has been banished to a remote island and i will be writing about how it was a good idea.

I think it was a good idea because after Cole got mauled by a bear he changed and became more of a positive thinker like at pg.110 Cole said “if i like the cake maybe the ingredients are okay too” and that’s why i think that it was a good idea that they banished Cole.

coles banishment to the island

I think Cole banishment is a good idea, because he needs to figure out what he is.Plus he also needs to think about joining circle justice and if he actually wants to join it.or if he just wants a sponsor form circle justice and he doesn’t even care about want he did. Cole dad was abusing Cole when hes drunk, and he’s Mom just a pretty lady who just does nothing when Cole gets beat up by his dad.Plus Garvey was a native tinglet and he made the idea of sending Cole into the island.plus Garvey knows what would happen if he hand’t sent Cole to the island ,Cole dad would beat him up, and Cole would do more bad things.Garvey wants Cole to go to the island because he wants him to see the good side of the island and of the challenges about the island Garvey knows that Cole won’t escape the island.Cole tried to  escape the island at night, but at night the gravitational atteration causes the moon to move the water the other way.so when Cole was trying to escape he basically got pushed away every time he swam.Garvey probably knew that would happen,Thats why it’s a good idea to and Cole to an island to get some peace and calmness these are some quotes when cole went to the island

food is energy and energy is life

anger is never a memory to be forgotten

SHOULD COLE BE BANISHED TO A REMOTE ISLAND

I personally think Cole should be sent to jail! He smashed peter driskols skull into the side walk! Cole was also mean and threatening. Cole threatened  peter, “your a dead man,” touching spirit bear page 7.Cole was taking it out on the spirit Bear, “A bear with half a brain would have turned tail and run. Instead this dumb animal had attacked.”, he thought. Page 69
Cole wanted to take it out on the baby sparrows.”if I where the mother I would leave them to fend for themselves”,he thought.”She didn’t ow them anything”.”Without his injuries he could have crawled up and and knocked the nest down”,” that what the stupid birds deserved”he thought. Page 75

Banishing Cole And Why I think It Was A Good Idea

We have been reading this book called Touching Spirit Bear and we have  been wondering if banishing Cole was a good idea or a bad idea. Here are some of my ideas.

I think that banishing Cole was a good idea and here are my reasons why. Garvey said that the banishment was “an extended time alone to face himself and to face the angry spirits inside of him.” Page 56. Cole was not doing well because he was angry to himself because his dad was angry to him all the time. Second, when Garvey gave the at.oow to Cole he wanted him to give it to someone he trusted. Third, Cole found himself in a bad spot when he was in the circle justice meetings and he wanted to be on the island because he did not want to be in jail. He also burned the shelter because he was angry and he tried to burn the at.oow but he missed the fire. He didn’t like the place but I think that him going there was a good idea  Banishing Cole was a good idea because it gave Cole a chance to ” find himself there.”
