The weather was wet for our walk in the wetlands! Thankfully we were dressed for the weather and ready to go. We walked to Burnaby Lake Regional Park, all the way to Piper Spit and the Lookout Tower. Along the way we noticed the important parts of the wetland ecosystem and marveled at all the wildlife we saw right here in the middle of the city! Here are just a few of the sights we saw…

p.s. we walked 9.9 km round trip, phew!

So far, we have explored Cameron Park, Maple Grove Park, and several trails at the base of Burnaby Mountain. We learned how to estimate the height of a tree using triangulation with a stick the length of our arms, played some cooperative PE games outdoors, completed a nature scavenger hunt, and worked together to build shelters.

Here are some of the forest shelters we built on Wednesday and some of the learning comments:

“The first time we got it all wrong and we were trying to build things separately and do different jobs. Now I can see we need to work together to build it.”

“The first time we didn’t have the frame quite right. We need to have a triangle with a beam across to make it more stable.”

“It’s really important to build a firepit because that’s where we will stay warm while we’re building the shelters and it’s important to have rocks around the edge so it doesn’t destroy the shelter and spread. And you can have ceremonies by it when the shelter is all finished.”

What did you learn? “Teamwork!”

Hair Ice

Today we went for a walk and we found hair ice in the forest. Click the link below for a quick video explaining how hair ice forms. We sure are lucky to live in a place with such interesting science!

We will be going on a field trip to SFU on Friday, December 6 from 11:00 – 1:30 to support our work this term in Science.

In order for us to be able to go, we are relying on parent drivers who have completed the Volunteer Driver Authorization and a Criminal Record Check. If you are able to drive for this field trip, please indicate this on the tear off section at the bottom of the permission form. (We really appreciate your support!!)

I’ve included a link for the form in case your child has misplaced theirs.
