TERM THREE OVERVIEW FOR FRENCH IMMERSION KINDERGARTEN

 

Dear Parents and Guardians,

 

The year has gone by so quickly! We continued to explore many themes and delved into many new curriculum concepts. This term will be the final term for the Kindergarten year. Students will continue to receive instruction through inquiry-based and play-based teaching. Term 3 will be spent going deeper into curriculum topics and preparing the students to enter Grade 1. The following is a brief description of goal areas and learning outcomes for third term.

 

French Language Arts (Français Langue Seconde)

       Students will engage in speaking and listening activities to share ideas and communicate in French. They will interact with the teacher and peers in oral situations to produce simple sentences in French, such as: J’aime la pomme, C’est un papillion. They will also learn to associate beginning sounds with pictures and learn how to blend and segment sounds in a word.In Term 3, students will also participate in the home reading program. Through the home reading program, students will practise and use various reading strategies at school and at home, learn to identify some high frequency French sight words and identify repeating words and repetitive patterns in books (comme, un, une, le, la, c’est etc). Students will also learn to write using invented spelling, environmental print, sight words and theme words to create simple sentences, ex J’aime la terre.

 

Mathematics (Matématiques)

       Students will learn to identify, sort and describe 2D and 3D objects using a single attribute such as size or shape and French words such as grand, petit, comme un ball. They will also learn about length, mass and volume and will learn to describe them in french using vocabulary such as: plus grande, le meme, plus petit, leger, lourd, plus, moins.

 

Science (Sciences)

        This term, students will continue to share with others information obtained by observing features of their environment (ex. signs of spring) and will partake in many outdoor experiences to teach an appreciation of their local environment. They will learn to describe and identify the needs of a plants by planting seeds and caring for the plant as it grows. Students will also have the opportunity to harvest caterpillars in the classroom to support their learning of living things and life cycle. Additionally, students will learn about the effects of movement (pushes, pulls, size, shape and materials that effect movement)

 

Social Studies (Sciences Humaines)

       Students will learn to identify characteristics of different local environments, including the aboriginal community and will demonstrate responsible behaviour in caring for their immediate environment. They will continue to gather information from personal experiences, oral sources, and visual representations. Through our star student program, students will share with others: ways in which their families differ, their personal and family history and about their needs and wants of their individual families

 

Fine Arts (Beaux-arts) music, drama, visual art, dance

In music, the concepts to be covered this term include: melody, tempo and rhythm.

In conjunction to our math unit on measurement, students will demonstrate a willingness to participate in drama activities that explore the roles of Goldilocks and the 3 Bears.

For art, students will demonstrate an awareness that people make and use art and will create images from a variety of cultural contexts. We will be exploring a variety of famous, local and aboriginal artists to inspire our creations.

 

Physical Development (Éducation Physique)

       In the third term your child will have the opportunity to participate in learning : cooperative games involving the parachute, skills involved in using gym equipment and minor games with a focus on teamwork.

 

Health and Career Education (Éducation à la santé et la carrière)

       Through the ‘Let’s Talk about Touching Program’ students will learn to identify opportunities to make choices about their bodies, use appropriate terminology to identify female and male private body parts and differentiate between appropriate and inappropriate ways of being touched.

 

Technology

        Students will have frequent opportunities to use the ipads to enhance learning, through literacy, math and inquiry. Students will also use the ipads as a means to document their learning.
