Good morning Division 9!

I have enjoyed reading some of your letters to me and look forward to seeing more emails in the next few days. Watch your email for a reply from me!

A note to your parents: When your child is doing a written assignment, please let your child do the actual writing on their own. It is wonderful to discuss ideas, like we would during a class discussion, as that gets their ideas flowing. However, I would like to see “student” spelling and punctuation – yes, even if it’s not conventional! If your child does read it aloud to you while they are proofreading, it is helpful to ask them questions to help them add more details to their writing and remind them to check for COPS (Capitalization, Organization, Punctuation, Spelling).

I am hoping to schedule a Zoom video conference with students soon, however I have to wait for some guidelines from the school district to be finalized and shared with staff so that we can all be safe online.

ASSIGNMENT #1 –  INTERNET SAFETY

As we are going to be doing a lot of our learning online, it is important that we know safety rules for the internet. Please watch the Digital Footprint video then the Online Safety video. After watching, tell your parents two safety rules about sharing information online.

ASSIGNMENT #2: RAZ KIDS

Click the link here or under the Bookmarks. Then click your name and enter the password that I emailed to you yesterday to login to your Raz Kids account. Please try to read one book per day on school days.

  • Go to the Reading Room and make sure you Listen to the book, Read the book then Answer the Questions (?) I will get reports telling me what you have read and your scores on the comprehension questions – including how many times you tried! So please take the time to read the stories carefully before attempting the questions.
  • Go into the Star Zone  to Build your Avatar and start decorating your Raz Rocket. As you complete more online reading activities, you will earn more stars to spend : )

ASSIGNMENT #3 – MONEY

Yesterday you collected some coins and thought about some questions that I asked. You should have nickels – 5 cents, dimes 10 cents, quarters 25 cents, loonies $1.00and toonies $2.00.

The Canadian coins  in the first picture were all the same because they all have a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the back. The American coins in the second picture have different pictures on the front and on the back there are portraits of former USA presidents.

Part A: Read the attached Coin Poem. If you want an extra creative challenge, write a verse for the loonie and/or the toonie and email it to me. I would love to share your new verses in our class blog!

Part B: Money notation – practice writing the values of different coins using both types of money notation. You can print the attached Money Values sheet here or just look at the sheet then print your answers on a piece of paper.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY – YOGA

Try out this Pokemon yoga video.  What was your favourite pose? What was your most challenging pose? Please post your answers in the comments section (under the date at the top of this blog post). Then your classmates and I can see your answers.

Good morning Division 9 families!

Welcome to the first day of using our class blog for learning at home! You may do your work in any order that you choose, however I encourage you to create a daily routine just like we have a Shape of the Day in the classroom. Here are some things to consider as you think about designing a routine that will work best for your family:

  • Get up and go to bed at the same time each day. Eat snacks and meals at regular times.
  • Get dressed and have breakfast before you start learning – just like a regular day at school.
  • Gather your supplies and technology in a work space where you can concentrate .
  • Ask your parents for help if needed.
  • Try to spend some time every day doing a variety of activities: school work, screen time, chores, exercise and free time.  If possible, get outside daily.

ASSIGNMENT #1: Send me a letter/email.

You can write your letter on a piece of paper and have your parents take a photo of it and email it, you can type your letter in a word document then your parents can save it and send it as an attachment or you can type it in your parents’ email, if it’s okay with them. Tell me about how and what you are doing at home. Think about some/all of the questions below:

  • How you are feeling? How are you doing?
  • What do you like and dislike about staying at home?
  • What have you been doing to keep busy? What is your favourite activity so far?
  • How have you stayed active? What suggestions do you have for physical activities while staying safe at home?
  • What do you want me to know so I can help you to learn at home?
  • What do you wonder about? You can ask me a question too.

Things to think about:

  • Writing an email is just like writing a letter so start with a greeting like, “Dear Mrs. Manners,” or “Hello Ms. Manners!”
  • Write an opening sentence like, “I have been missing going to school.” or “It has been so different staying at home.”
  • Write details (5Ws) supported by thoughts and feelings! Use the word “because” to explain.
  • Write a closing sentence like, “I am looking forward to your email back to me.”
  • Finish with an ending like, “Sincerely/From, your name”

Hint: You can start your writing today then go back and add more ideas through this week. Be sure to read your writing over at least 3 times. When it’s ready, SEND it to marnie.manners@burnabyschools.ca

DUE DATE: Friday, April 17 or sooner

ASSIGNMENT #2: Math topic: Money

Please gather a collection of coins so that you have them ready for activities in our new math unit on money. Please try to find a couple of loonies and toonies, 4 quarters, 10 dimes and 20 nickels then put them in a ziploc bag. If you can’t find any/enough coins, print out the  Canadian Coins Sheet and cut out the needed coins. Bonus: see if you can find some pennies too! If you don’t know which coin is which, talk to your parents about their names and values as you ask for help to collect them from around your house.

Think about the following questions:

  • Why did I ask for 4 quarters, 10 dimes and 20 nickels – not a different amount?
  • Do you know the name and value of each type of coin?
  • What is the same about all the coins in the 1st picture? Hint: look at both sides.
  • What is different about the coins in the second picture?

Bonus activity: Collect money from other countries or older different looking Canadian money for sharing later.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY:  Click to try out this Go Noodle water cycle dance (after 5 seconds, you can click SKIP AD). Listen to the words and definitions to review our learning about the water cycle. Have fun!!!

Hello to Division 9!

Welcome to our class blog! I really enjoyed connecting with each of you last week! It was wonderful to hear what you are up to at home as I so miss seeing all of you and sharing our experiences and learning together.

I have been busy learning a lot of new technology and am excited to continue to learning together while at home. I will be using this blog to connect with you, share learning activities and support your learning at home. You will see that there are some links already posted at the side of this page. Some of these you are familiar with like Tumblebooks, Canada Map Quiz and Dance Mat Typing. Others are new like Go Noodle and Raz Kids. Go Noodle has many fun movement and dance activities to keep you active while you are safe at home. Please wait to use Raz Kids as I will soon be sending you a login and password to begin assignments on this website.

If you need this blog translated, there is an orange button to click that will allow you to choose a country’s flag for different languages. Click on the Canadian flag to return to English. For general public comments, there is a comment section under the title of each blog post for students/parents. If you have specific questions, comments or need support or clarification, please email me at marnie.manners@burnabyschools.ca.

As mentioned in my email, please continue to access the district and ministry websites for learning opportunities this week. I look forward to connecting with you again soon.
