{"id":938,"date":"2014-10-30T16:10:27","date_gmt":"2014-10-30T23:10:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/lanawayk\/?page_id=938"},"modified":"2021-10-06T17:12:02","modified_gmt":"2021-10-07T00:12:02","slug":"blogging","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/lanawayk\/blogging\/","title":{"rendered":"Blogging to your BLOGfolio"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>How to Post Your Blog<\/h1>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sd41.bc.ca\/learningtech\/files\/2020\/09\/blogFolio_howto_student.pdf\"><strong> link<\/strong><\/a> to a PDF version of instructions, complete with pictures!<\/p>\n<p>1.<strong> login<\/strong> &#8211; using your unique username and password (not to be shared). All usernames start with your name and then 01-15.<\/p>\n<p>2. Under<strong> Lanaway&#8217;s Lounge<\/strong> (next to the house icon), you&#8217;ll see the option for <strong>Dashboard <\/strong>(in the drop down menu).<\/p>\n<p>3. In the dashboard, you should see &#8220;<strong>Posts<\/strong>&#8221; (next to the pin icon). If you hover over &#8220;posts&#8221; you will see a drop-down menu; you can either go to &#8220;all posts&#8221; and then &#8220;add new&#8221; once you get to that page (button is at the top), or from the menu go straight to &#8220;add new&#8221;. Either way, click &#8220;<strong>add new<\/strong>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>4. You&#8217;ll see a title text box. This is where you will put the title that I&#8217;ve suggested for you. For this week, it is: Ah-h Moment. Below that you will see another box. This is where you will submit your writing. Simply copy and paste from your word doc. Some quick tips: To select all: Ctrl A; to Copy: Ctrl C; to Paste: Ctrl V<\/p>\n<p>Notice that you can edit text a bit.<strong> B<\/strong> = bold; <em><strong>I<\/strong><\/em> = italicized; you&#8217;ll also see bullets and options to number items. You can add media (pictures) and links (the chain link icon).<\/p>\n<p>5. When you&#8217;re ready (ex. you&#8217;ve READ IT ONE MORE TIME for edits), look at the right side bar. The top box is how you publish your piece &#8211; but hold on! You&#8217;re not ready for that! Find the box titled:<strong> Categories<\/strong><em> (lower down in the right side bar). <\/em>Select &#8220;<strong>writers<\/strong>&#8221; and then find<strong> your name<\/strong>.<strong> Click both boxes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>6. Go to the box at the bottom of the side bar\u00a0titled: <strong>Post Visibility<\/strong>. I want you to hide it from the home page. Check the box for: &#8220;<strong>Hide on the front page<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>7. Now you&#8217;re ready to publish. In your case, you&#8217;re going to go back to the top of the right side bar. Find the blue button that says &#8220;<strong>submit for review<\/strong>&#8220;. Me too, here\u2019s an interesting website I\u2019m reading about spiders.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>I noticed you\u2026<\/li>\n<li>The part I found most interesting\u2026<\/li>\n<li>A few things you did really well here are\u2026<\/li>\n<li>One thing I\u2019m seeing about your work is\u2026<\/li>\n<li>Have you considered\u2026<\/li>\n<li>Notice what they do well, was interesting or thought provoking.<\/li>\n<li>Notice also what they could do to improve their writing, expand their thinking or progress in their learning<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________<\/p>\n<h1 class=\"entry-title\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\">Posting Images and Videos to your E-Portfolio <\/span><\/h1>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #339966;\">IMAGES<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Two categories:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Image of an <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">activity<\/span> or product \u2013<strong> resize to<\/strong> web quality (<strong>640 x 480 pixels<\/strong>)<\/li>\n<li>Image of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">written work<\/span> (eg. notebook) \u2013 <strong>resize to 1024 x 768 pixels<\/strong> or <strong>800 x 600<\/strong> (these need to be bigger so it can be seen more readily)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>TIP<\/strong>: Save all images in a location that is easy to get to (eg. You basically convert to .mp4 using the Photos App (windows10). Here&#8217;s a <a href=\"https:\/\/web.microsoftstream.com\/video\/76b16bd1-99a1-4daa-ad36-00f37fc72ffa\">video<\/a> to show you how. When you access the link, scroll down to the very end.<\/p>\n<p>Doing this will not require you to compress. Instructions for that below.<\/p>\n<p>_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________<\/p>\n<p>Video takes up a significant amount of space and can slow a website down.<\/p>\n<p><strong>All videos need to be compressed prior to upload<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The goal is to get videos down to approximately 1-2MB. (*Sometimes changing the video size (down to 480 x 270) will do the trick.)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>.MOV videos<\/strong>: Convert all .mov (idevices) to mp4 (this will allow websites to display the actual video).<\/li>\n<li><strong>AUDIO<\/strong>: Save these as mp3 (not mp4). Check the file size before uploading.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>TIP<\/strong>: Save all VIDEO\/AUDIO in a location that is easy to get to (eg. GDrive if you\u2019re using GAFE, H:drive on computer). Publishing as part of a blog is a classroom activity so you should not write anything that you would not say or write in your regular classroom.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Five Blogging Rules<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Be safe<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Anyone can access the Internet and view what you write on a blog. Your page is \u2018protected\u2019 but there is nothing to stop people from copying your material and placing it elsewhere on the web.Protect your privacy. Use your given username and do not post pictures of yourself.Keep all personal information to yourself.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Be mindful of what you say<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li>You are responsible for anything that is posted in your username.<\/li>\n<li>Use appropriate language (e.g. limit your use of text speak or netlingo).<\/li>\n<li>Follow writing conventions including spelling, grammar and punctuation.<\/li>\n<li>Try not to generalize your sentences. Avoid the use of \u201cAll\u201d and \u201cEveryone\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>How you say something is as important as what you say.<\/li>\n<li>Could you be misunderstood? Be clear in the message you are trying to convey.<\/li>\n<li>Images inserted into a blog must be related to the context of the message and follow copyright rules.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Be respectful to others<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li>Blogs are about ideas \u2013 agree or disagree with an idea, NOT the person. Freedom of speech does not give you the right to be rude.<\/li>\n<li>When responding, try giving two stars and a wish (two positive comments and one thing you think could improve).<\/li>\n<li>Use evidence to support your position and make sure what you write is fair and accurate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Be informative<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li>Write about and present what you know. Make sure you get your facts straight and ask for advice if you are not sure.<\/li>\n<li>Linking to web sites from your blog or blog comments in support of your argument is an excellent idea. You are responsible for checking the accuracy of the information you post online.<\/li>\n<li>Respect copyright. It\u2019s customary in the blogosphere to cite sources by linking to them within blog posts, and it\u2019s recommended that you do so.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Be interesting<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">One way to do this is to expand on others ideas. You can quote other people\u2019s work, link back to it and add your own thoughts or opinions to their ideas.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Make it interesting and fun so that you will encourage your readers and listeners to come back for more. There\u2019s no point in blogging if people don\u2019t read or listen to what you say.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>__________________________________________________________________________________<\/p>\n<h1>Types Of Blog Posts<\/h1>\n<p>Though you can certainly have overlap and combine multiple types into one, there are 10 types of blog posts you commonly see on the web:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Reflection<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Deep thoughts and self-reflection on what you\u2019ve learnt or what you\u2019re thinking about. Putting it all out there can really help organize thoughts and ideas. Yu-Liang Shih\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/portfolio.newschool.edu\/shihy\/2017\/01\/30\/reflection-post\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reflection post<\/a>\u00a0and Andrea\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/andreaz12.edublogs.org\/2017\/06\/13\/tribune-bay-and-the-lessons-i-learnt-there\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reflections on camp<\/a>\u00a0demonstrate how this style can be used as part of a student blog.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. How-to\/Helpful<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 The classic \u2018how-to\u2019 essay can be enhanced with pictures, videos, and other media.\u00a0Yuka\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.yis.ac.jp\/19saitoyu\/2014\/06\/05\/ipad-trial-reflection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ambassador of 2:1 Program (iPad advice)<\/a>\u00a0is a \u2018how-to\u2019 for other students and their parents. Alkkarose created a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/alkkarose.edublogs.org\/2017\/03\/26\/diy-bookmarks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tutorial on how to create DIY bookmarks.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Journal\/Diary\/Recount<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 This is a versatile style of post that\u2019s great for reading logs, field trips, science labs, special events, study abroad, etc. Emma\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.yis.ac.jp\/19saitom\/2016\/11\/09\/gcd-adventure-niigata-expedition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Niigata Expedition<\/a>\u00a0is a journal post documenting reflections from a hiking trip. Molly recapped the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/molly45yps.edublogs.org\/2016\/09\/02\/the-potato-olympics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Potato Olympics<\/a>\u00a0held at her school.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. News\/Announcement<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 These posts aim to keep readers up-to-date with important information.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ariellez12.edublogs.org\/2017\/05\/19\/rip-dabbing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RIP Dabbing<\/a>\u00a0by Arielle and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/kaiyaz12.edublogs.org\/2017\/07\/02\/goodbye-grade-7\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Goodbye Grade 7<\/a>\u00a0by Kaiya are\u00a0announcement posts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. Marketing\/Sales<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Typically these are commercial style posts. Students could use blogs to advertise school events and fundraisers etc. The students at Auroa School made a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mrwebbauroa.blogspot.com.au\/2017\/09\/auroa-primary-school-promo.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">video to promote their school.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>6. Controversial\/Debate\/Editorial<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 This involves taking a stance on an issue, while backing up thoughts with facts and proof.\u00a0Examples include: Sidd\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/siddharthgrade6.weebly.com\/my-blog\/week-5-free-choice-debate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">debate on cell phones in schools<\/a>, and\u00a0Jackson\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.elanco.org\/custer547\/2017\/03\/24\/kids-watch-too-much-tv\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kids Watch Too Much TV.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>7. Reviews<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Think Amazon or TripAdvisor reviews. Students can review lessons, field trips, videos, books, games and more. Thanumi\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thanumiabey.weebly.com\/home\/april-24th-20178481938\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reviewed three websites for creating animated videos<\/a>, while\u00a0The Electronic Pencil sixth grade students\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/epencil.edublogs.org\/2016\/12\/20\/a-collection-of-video-game-reviews\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reviewed video games.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>8. Resource\/Reference<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 These are similar to the how-to posts, but something people might bookmark and come back to again and again. Refer to Yuka\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.yis.ac.jp\/19saitoyu\/2014\/05\/20\/fair-game-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fair Game post,\u00a0<\/a>Elise\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.elanco.org\/krock950\/2017\/05\/01\/quick-ways-of-typing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">list of keyboard shortcuts<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Brooklyn\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.elanco.org\/groff67c\/2017\/07\/19\/weird-but-useful-life-hacks-you-need-to-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">collection of life hacks.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>9. Ongoing Series<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Choose any of the above, but split it up into\u00a0several shorter posts that get published over a set period of time. Shahreen\u2019s HIV\/AIDS (<a href=\"https:\/\/shahreenisastudentblogger.blogspot.com.au\/2017\/04\/hivaids-awareness-part-13.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Part 1<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/shahreenisastudentblogger.blogspot.com.au\/2017\/04\/hivaids-awareness-part-23.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Part 2<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/shahreenisastudentblogger.blogspot.com.au\/2017\/04\/hivaids-awareness-part-33.html\">Part 3<\/a>) posts are a good example of\u00a0an ongoing series.<\/p>\n<p><strong>10. Curation Posts<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Sometimes people use a blog post or page to curate a list of resources on a particular topic.
