Then read it on EPIC.<\/span><\/h4>\n<h4>Helen Keller<\/h4>\n<p>I was born in Alabama. It was 1880.<\/p>\n<p>I got sick as a baby. I could not see. I could not hear.<\/p>\n<p>Imagine you could not see or hear. What would that feel like?<\/p>\n<p>I struggled to communicate. I was angry.<\/p>\n<p>I did not behave well. My family was upset.<\/p>\n<p>I needed help. I visited doctors. They worked with the deaf and the blind.<\/p>\n<p>They said I should work with a teacher. They suggested Anne Sullivan.<\/p>\n<p>Anne came to live with my family. I was 6 years old.<\/p>\n<p>Anne worked hard to teach me. It was not easy at first. But Anne found a way.<\/p>\n<p>What would it be like to have your teacher live with you?<\/p>\n<p>She helped me feel an object. Then she spelled the word in my hand.<\/p>\n<p>The first word I learned was \u201cwater\u201d It was a miracle!<\/p>\n<p>I quickly made progress.<\/p>\n<p>I learned to read Braille.<\/p>\n<p>I learned to write.<\/p>\n<p>I even learned to speak.<\/p>\n<p>With Anne\u2019s help, I went to school. I graduated from college.<\/p>\n<p>I wrote books. I traveled. I gave speeches.<\/p>\n<p>I was a leader for deaf and blind people.<\/p>\n<p>I started groups to help them.<\/p>\n<p>I shared my story.<\/p>\n<p>I won many awards. I was honored until my death at age 88<\/p>\n<p>I was a gifted woman. I was smart and courageous.
