Happy new year! We reflected on last year and our favourite moments, and then talked about our goals and what we want to learn and do this year in 2025.

We created holiday decorations over a few days. First, we painted our boards light blue, then we painted a layer of white paint for the snowy ground. Once it was all dried, we used our fingerprints and coloured sharpies to create “snowmen” to represent the members of our families, thinking about their favourite colours, their height, and their facial expressions. We learned a few different font styles and wrote a holiday greeting once everything was dry. Once they were ready to go home, we wrapped the presents using our choice of wrapping paper and ribbon.

With the help of Mrs. Austin (our Indigenous Education Resource Teacher) and our big buddies in Ms. Kumar’s class, we learned how to weave cedar ornaments of our very own! We had to use six wet cedar strips because they were easier to bend and work with. We then used blue twine to secure our work!

We had a scientist from SCWIST (Society for Canadian Women in Science & Technology) come to teach us about properties of matter and how to make oobleck! We learned that oobleck is a non-Newtonian fluid, meaning it takes the properties of solids and liquids. Oobleck is also so much fun to play with!

We learned about making repeating patterns and expanding patterns. We practiced using different materials and manipulatives to make patterns of our own and had our classmates ask us questions like, “what goes next?” and “what will the _th shape be?”
