Cross Curricular Overview – Language Arts, Social Studies, and Science

Overview for the Year

We work on literacy on a daily basis through reading, writing, oral language.  It also is part of our social studies and science units.

The Big Ideas that we are focusing on this year are:

  1. Language and text can be a source of creativity and joy.
  2. Exploring stories and other texts helps us understand ourselves and make connections to others and to the world.
  3. Exploring and sharing multiple perspectives extends our thinking.
  4. Developing our understanding of how language works allows us to use it purposefully.
  5. Questioning what we hear, read, and view contributes to our ability to be educated and engaged citizens.
  6. Newton’s three laws of motion describe the relationship between force and motion.
  7. The solar system is part of the Milky Way, which is one of billions of galaxies.
  8. Electricity- generated in different ways with different environmental impacts and electromagnetism
  9. Survival needs –  all organisms need space, food, water, and access to resources in order to survive

As Readers, students used their understanding of the key elements of a novel (Characters, Plot, Theme, Conflict, Symbolism, Setting, and Style) for the Novel Podcast Project.  Students worked in groups to create a podcast episode that explored the elements, provided a short biography of the author, included a game or trivia portion, recommendations, and interviewed a guest “expert.”  After all the planning and script writing, the groups recorded their podcast using Audacity and then edited and published.  This project involved reading, writing, ADST, personal responsibility, communication, and creative thinking.  This term students continue to participate in cross-curricular content that allowed them to read for information, read for pleasure, and read for purpose.

As Writers, students have been writing across all curricular areas.  This term students completed their  “Pursuit of Happiness” speeches and shared them with the class.  We moved on to poetry where we explored free verse, shape, and found poems.  To end the term, students worked with partners to create a “How to” activity that they would present and do with the class.

As Citizens of British Columbia, Canada, and the world, students continued their work on and understanding of Indigenous History in Canada.  We had a guest artist come in and share is personal journey as a child of a Residential School Survivor.  He then taught the students different Indigenous shapes to then use in the directed drawing of “Orca Chief.”  Students also used loose parts to build a Indigenous themed story.  They took this image and created a story with a beginning, middle, and end.  We ended the term looking at Ancient Greece.

As Scientists,  students participated in an Airplane competition that saw David N. winning with the longest toss of 39m.  Students learned about flight, thrust, and pull to help them test and design their airplane to compete with.  Please see your child’s blogfolio to see their assessment.  Over the first term and second term, we have been exploring Microorganisms and body systems.  Students have chosen a system to explore and will complete their research and sketchnoting project to share their learning as we begin the third term in April.
