Physical and Health Education Overview

Overview for the Year

As Athletic and Health-Conscious Learners, students explore their understanding of their physical abilities and how their body supports them during their daily lives.  As well, they continue to build on a growth mindset to support their well-being when it comes to both social and academic areas of school life.  Furthermore, students explore and look deeply within to understand themselves and others.

The Big Ideas that we are focusing on this year are:

  1. Daily physical activity enables us to practice skillful movement and helps us develop personal fitness.
  2. Physical literacy and fitness contribute to our success in and enjoyment of physical activity.
  3. We experience many changes in our lives that influence how we see ourselves and others.
  4. Healthy choices influence our physical, emotional, and mental well-being.
  5. Learning about similarities and differences in individuals and groups influences community health.

As Athletes, we continue to work on building our skills. The focus this term was was on movement and cooperation. Students participated in gymnastics for the month of April – movement and agility were needed during this unit. Students really wanted to do badminton, so we had a mini unit learning the skills and positioning.  We ended it off with a mini tournament.  To end the term, students got in to groups to create an activity to have their other classmates complete. They had to use materials that were in the equipment room and write down the steps and instructions for the group activity.  They all did a great job presenting their activities.  Physical movement and activities help our brain, our thinking skills, and our muscles!

As Health-Conscious Learners, students continued to look at ourselves and our moral compass.  As well, we explored the affects of social media on ourselves and motivation – intrinsic and extrinsic.
