Counting

Counting can never be underestimated as a great skill to practice often.  There are lots of ways to practice counting.  Students are encouraged to find a small set of objects.  Have them count by 1s.  Check that they are touching/moving 1 object every time they count.  This is teaching them that the number they are counting needs to match to an object.  Can they count without missing an object or counting an object twice.  Start with collections under 20 until they can do this accurately.  Then try collections between 20-50.  Got that, great!  Try collections between 50-100.  Wow, getting good!  Try to count collections greater than 100.
