2024/25 UHE MUSIC LEADERSHIP INFO

6/7 ROCK BAND, INTERMEDIATE VOCAL TECHNIQUE CLASS, INTERMEDIATE DANCE SQUAD, TECH CREW, STAGE CREW, ACTOR, AND UHE HONOUR STRINGS.

Dear 2024-2025 UHE Grade 5,6 & 7 Families,

I am excited to announce an opportunity for students in grade 5-7 next year. Music Leadership! As part of UHE Performing Arts program, Music Leadership will give students an opportunity to work on leadership skills, life skills and of course, to hone their musical abilities.

Many students have asked for information about Music Leadership for next year, so I have put together the following summary so students can think about whether this is a commitment they want to make.

UHE MUSIC LEADERSHIP (weekly at recess)

  • Students will work on growing confidence, leadership skills, communication, introspection, empathy, perspective taking, and understanding in subject area (instrumental, vocal or dance)
  • Students meet weekly at recess
  • Students work with Ms. Hintersteininger and one primary half hour class weekly
  • Note: Time to be set up with classroom teacher, so it does not interfere with classroom teacher’s lessons.
  • Interview questions that will be asked during audition time: Why would you like to join UHE Music Leadership? What are your strengths? What are skills that you think you need to work on? What do you do when conflict arises with peers? What would be the reason for you to not show up to rehearsal?

Joining Music Leadership will also allow students the opportunity to participate in other performing arts opportunities at UHE next year, including:

UHE ROCK BAND (8:20AM day of week TDB)

  • This is a fast pace extracurricular class. Students are at a level that they can practice at home and come to rehearsal with music mostly learnt
  • Ensemble includes lead vocalists, lead electric guitar (individual notes/ melodic), chorus guitar (chords), piano, violin, drumkit, auxiliary percussion & electric bass.
  • Students on rotation lead “O Canada” and “Coast Salish Anthem” in assemblies.
  • Audition requirement: “Take on Me”, by aha and “O Canada”.

UHE VOCAL TECHNIQUE (12:15-12:50 day of the week TBD)

  • Students work on vocal technique (projection, vowel vs continent placement, enunciation, head vs chest, etc.
  • ), stage presence, blend/soloing, and microphone technique.
  • Rock Band Vocalists and older students that are wanting lead roles for the musical are required to come to this class.
  • Audition Requirement: “O Canada”

UHE DANCE SQUAD (12:15-12:50 day of the week TBD)

  • Students will learn basic combinations to perform for assemblies and concerts.
  • Older students with background in dance (contemporary, jazz, ballet, hip hop, cheer, gymnastics, modern, street, etc.) will lead younger students in combinations.
  • Audition Requirement: 30 second routine. Please come to the audition with mp3 on a memory stick.

UHE TECH CREW (time TBD leading up to assemblies/concerts)

  • Students will learn how to set up the microphones, work mic tests, mic placement, learn how to problem solve on the spot, sets up monitors, audio mp3s, projector, etc.
  • Students must show constant initiative, focus and perseverance in music class, since tech is working through constant problems in a cool collective manner 

UHE STAGE CREW (time TBD leading up to assemblies/concerts)

  • Students will learn how to map each groups performance and set up stage accordingly
  • Students will oversee lighting (gym lighting, spot and follow lights)
  • Students must show constant initiative, focus and perseverance in music class

If your child is interested in applying for Music Leadership, I invite them to fill out the application form and discuss this with you at home. I am happy to take questions between now and September.

There will be another opportunity for students to join in the fall, but I wanted to give current students a chance to begin thinking if this could be right for them.

                                                                                          With much gratitude,

Kathryn Hintersteininger BEd., BMus., MMus. (she/her)

Guitar

Let’s set you up for success! 👍👌💪🏼

Steps when getting yourself prepared to play in class:

1. Walk to the guitars, pick up your guitar, and walk to your spot.

2. Sit crisscross.

3. Sit up straight. Arm not leaning on leg.

4. Place the back of your guitar against your stomach.

5. Head of guitar facing up.

6. Thumb on the back of neck.

7. Base joints not touching the neck of guitar.

How to practice a chord:

1. Have the chord chart and song in front of you.

2. Figure out each string at a time. Example: E major:

Start with fingers that are placed down:

– String 5, Finger 3, Fret 2….check for clear tone, keep finger down add

– String 4, Finger 2, Fret 2….check for clear tone, keep two fingers down

– String 3, Finger 1, fret 1…..check for clear tone, keep three fingers down

– Add string 1, 5, and 6.

Go slow! We are working on muscle memory. ☺️ You got this!!! 😁

Reasons for not getting a clean sound:

1. Base joints touching finger board

2. Fingers touching strings.

3. Not pressing down hard enough.

4. Finger is on fret, instead of under the fret.

5. Arm is on leg.

6. Guitar isn’t against stomach.

7. Strumming too hard.

8. Guitar is out of tune.

Rock Band

Rehearsals: Tuesday at lunch from 12:20-12:50

We got this! Practice slow with least amount of tension. Get that muscle memory. 💪🏼

Until Spring Break our top speed will be 120=quarter note!

1. Measure: Slow, making sure you have the right notes, accents, dynamics. Get this so it is easy. Practice in small chunks.

2. Drill: Only start this when muscle memory feels good. Add metronome and slowly build speed. If you loose clarity or accents go back to measuring.
