PINK SHIRT DAY, SCWIST, ALPHA BUDDIES, OUTSIDE TIME, SKATING, SNOW DAY and POTATOES

PINK SHIRT DAY– a day for kindness and thinking of others and how our actions can affect others. Students are encouraged to be kind and caring every day of the year and to try to think about others and how they can help make a positive impact on those around them. We worked with our Big Buddies to create pink shirts.

SCWIST- (The Society for Canadian Women in Science and Technology) . This group came to our class and taught us about ow our eyes work and about using devices, such as a periscope, to help see around corners or above water, and how this technology works. The students then got to make their own periscopes!  Some did not work properly right away so the students were encouraged to use their critical thinking skills to make adjustments until the periscopes worked to their satisfaction.

OUTSIDE PLAYTIME- The students enjoy climbing, swinging, jumping, shooting baskets, bouncing balls, dribbling, shooting, running, tagging, flipping, and so much more when we enjoy our time playing outside!  What did you enjoy doing when you were a child in school? Tell your child and share a story about your time playing outdoors.

ALPHA BUDDIES- The Leadership students from Alpha came again and this time they brought a S.T.E.M. project! The students were given a vase of water with shaaving cream on top. Using water droppers and coloured water, the students squeezed the coloured water into the shaving cream until they could see it seeping down to the fresh water below. This was demonstrating the action of water filling a cloud and then falling as rain. The students learned the stages of the water cycle in the process and had a lot of fun mixing colours and making the water in the vase a new and interesting colour!

SKATING-  We walked from Brentwood to Kensington Arena and the students enjoyed an hour of ice skating with Mrs. Walji’s and Ms. Mak’s classes!  The students had a lot of fun and many were skating for their  very first time!  I was impressed with the determination, bravery and comeraderie the students displayed!

Which Would you rather be?

SNOW!! After almost an entire winter of waiting for snow, Mother Nature finally delivered!  The students couldn’t wait to get outside for an extra bit of playtime in the cold, wet snow!

WRITING As we are working on extending our story writing and being careful to add more elements (characters, setting, problem, feeling, plan, action, consequence, feeling 2, ending and end feeling), the students were very excited to write down their ideas so as not to forget any details!  It makes me so happy to see such writing excitement!

Students are encouraged to use some Sparkle words (Wow words or Juicy Words) in their writing and here re few we have encouraged them to use! They are doing a really great job using many of these words!

POTATOESAs we learn about healthy eating and life cycles, we have planted potatoes!  We are part of a BC Spuds in Tubs program this year, which means the potatoes and all pots and soil are given to us by the BC Agriculture In The Classroom Foundation. Before Spring Break, students planted their seed potatoes and are in groups, sharing one of 5 tubs. Each tub has 5 seed potatoes!  WE will see how much they have grown when we get back after Spring Break! In June. we will harvest and count our potatoes and celebrate our harvest with a Potato Party!  We will cook and eat our potatoes!
