We are mathematicians
We have continued to explore shapes! We have been exploring the questions:
- How can we use shapes in design?
- How are shapes different and unique?
- How can we combine shapes to make something new?
We have been building, sorting, and experimenting with shapes in art to help us build our understanding of the different attributes of 2D and 3D shapes.
This week, we read the story The Little Hummingbird by Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas which helped to foster conversation around how we can make a difference in our communities, even if our actions are small. We then connected our reading to our study of shapes, and explored the characters in the story and how we could use shapes to design each character.
We are authors and illustrators!
We have continued to work on finding and sharing our stories. We have been exploring different materials including loose parts (gems, characters, blocks, wooden figures, etc.), as well as experimenting with paint to find and document our stories. We are working on creating books to capture our stories. Each day, we have an Authors Chair, where students share their stories with us. We have been studying different authors and illustrators, including our classmates, and have been documenting author and illustrator moves as a class that we can try out in our own books! Author and illustrator moves are choices that are made when creating books to cause a certain experience or consequence for the readers (Johnston et al., 2020). Some of the author moves we have been working on are:
- Adding pictures and words to our stories
- Adding details.
- Making our pictures Big, Bold, and Beautiful by adding detail and colours
- Adding more details to our writing to help paint a picture for our readers
- Using speech bubbles to share what characters are saying and thinking
- Placing our pictures at the top of the page and words at the bottom of the page to make it easier for our readers to find the words that help to tell our stories.
We are readers!
We have been working to find and pick “just right books”. Students are encouraged to pick a book for themselves by using the following questions:
I choose a book
Purpose: Why do I want to read this book?
Interest: Does it interest me?
Comprehension: Do I understand what I am reading?
Know: Do I know most of the words?
We have also been practicing our routines of Read To Self and Read To Others.
Wishing you all a wonderful weekend and looking forward to another week of learning together next week!
