We would like to share our learning with our families from the last couple of weeks!
On February 24th we took part in Pink Shirt Day. We read a story about ways that we can be kind and discussed how we can help to spread kindness and stand up for others when we see that they are being treated unkindly. Students then created a heart, choosing to write a message about how they can be kind or how they can say something by using words or actions to stand up for themselves or others.
As Citizens, we have been exploring and discussing the Core Competencies Communication. First, we brainstormed what communication means to us.
We then looked at examples and discussed how we can be good listeners and speakers. Some of our ideas are:
I can use kind words.
I can wait my turn to ask a question or make a comment.
I can listen with my eyes, a calm body, and a caring heart.
As Authors and Storytellers we have been telling stories from our own lives. This week we continued to explore topics that we could write about when sharing true stories that tell about ourselves.
As Mathematicians, we have been exploring how we can use tens and ones to organize numbers. We have also been exploring ways to represent and model questions that are relevant to us. For example, we explored the question “I have 8 containers of Play-Doh. I went to the store and bought 9 more. How many containers of Play-Doh do I have?” Students used pictures, numbers, and different materials to represent and model what was happening in this questions.
As Scientists, we are investigating bears! This week we began with looking at different photos of bears, sharing what we noticed, our questions, and what we already know about bears. We brainstormed what we want to know about bears and will begin our research this week. Students will work in small groups to investigate their questions. They will then have a chance to share their findings with their peers to help us build a collaborative understanding of bears, their needs and how their behaviours help them to survive in their environment.
As Explorers and Creators, students have shown an interest in sewing. This week, we planned and started on our designs. Students will have a chance to reflect on their creations once they are complete.
