We have been learning all about plants!<\/strong>\u00a0 We planted three different types of beans – Runner Beans, Pole Beans and Bush Beans.<\/p>\n

We did an experiment to see how seeds grow into plants.\u00a0 We started by putting the bean seeds and a wet paper towel in a small zip-lock bag and hung it in the window<\/p>\n

Here’s what they looked like after three weeks.<\/strong><\/p>\n

We were surprised to see that roots of the seeds grew downward, no matter which way the seed was resting.<\/p>\n

We opened up a seed to see what was inside.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Can you see the baby plant?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Parts of the Seed:<\/p>\n

Seed Coat<\/strong> – The most outer part that protects the seed.\u00a0 It has special chemicals (or super powers) in it that tell the seed when it is time to start growing.<\/p>\n

Roots<\/strong> – They hold the plant in the ground and keep it upright. Roots always grow downward.\u00a0 They take water and food from the soil.<\/p>\n

Embryo<\/strong> – The baby plant.<\/p>\n

Food Storage or Endosperm<\/strong> – feeds the embryo and helps it grow.\u00a0 It’s like the baby plant has it own backpack filled with snacks.<\/p>\n

We also learned that the seed needs water, sun, air, soil and space to grow. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Until it gets those things, it is dormant<\/strong> which means it is resting.\u00a0 When the seed begins to grow, it is germinating.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Wow! Seeds are really smart.<\/p>\n
