Second Step is a program that teaches children skills for social and academic success.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Our topic is: Problem Solving<\/p>\n<p><strong>This weeks lesson:<\/strong>\u00a0 Inviting Others to Play<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Lesson Concepts:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li class=\"x_MsoListParagraphCxSpFirst\">When you see other kids being left out of play, it is important to notice and have empathy for them.<\/li>\n<li class=\"x_MsoListParagraphCxSpLast\">Inviting others to play is a caring thing to do.<\/li>\n<li>Playing with others is a way to get to know them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Today we are going to listen to a book called Strictly No Elephants.\u00a0 This is story about a little boy and his\u00a0 pet elephant who are being left out of the Pet Club.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Strictly No Elephants by Lisa Mantchev\" width=\"1400\" height=\"788\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/94aMwnfIQ0o?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>We are going to use the Problem-Solving Steps to see how the little boy solved his problem.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/gourlays\/files\/2020\/06\/poster.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6120\" src=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/gourlays\/files\/2020\/06\/poster-232x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"232\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/gourlays\/files\/2020\/06\/poster-232x300.jpg 232w, https:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/gourlays\/files\/2020\/06\/poster.jpg 371w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 232px) 100vw, 232px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Say the problem<\/strong>.\u00a0 The little boy was excluded from the Pet Club because no elephant are allowed.\u00a0 He sees a little girl with a pet skunk who wasn&#8217;t allowed in either.\u00a0 How do you think that they felt about being left out?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Think of solutions.<\/strong>\u00a0 The little boy invited the little girl to start their own Pet Club.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Explore consequences<\/strong>.\u00a0 What could happen if they started their own Pet Club where all were welcome?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pick the best solution.<\/strong>\u00a0 They made a lot of new friends.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Today you learned about noticing other children who are not playing with anyone.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You thought about how it feels to be left out. This is called having <strong>empathy.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>You considered inviting other children to play with you.<\/li>\n<li>You learned that when you play with people, you get to know them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What are some things you can say to invite others to join in your game?<\/strong>\u00a0 &#8220;Do you want to play?&#8221;\u00a0 &#8220;Come and play with us.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Next time you notice others being left out, invite them to play.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Every Friday Division 9 &amp; 10 get together to work on Second Step.
