Second Step is a program that teaches children skills for social and academic success.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Our topic is:\u00a0 <strong>Emotional Management.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">This weeks lesson:<b>\u00a0 Handling Waiting.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Lesson concepts:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li class=\"x_MsoListParagraphCxSpFirst\">Calming Down Steps can help you manage feeling excited or impatient while waiting<\/li>\n<li class=\"x_MsoListParagraphCxSpLast\">Finding quiet things to do that won\u2019t distract others also helps you wait<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><b>Here is a story about waiting:<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Piggy has a surprise for Gerald. Does Gerald need to calm down?<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><a href=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/gourlays\/files\/2020\/05\/Calm_Down_Poster.pdf\">Calm_Down_Poster<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Let\u2019s use the poster to help Gerald:<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><strong>First, put your hands on your tummy. Say \u201cStop! I am feeling excited.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Now practice the<strong> Calm-Down Steps.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Take some <strong>deep, slow breaths<\/strong> that make your belly move out.<\/li>\n<li class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><strong>Counting<\/strong> also helps you calm down.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s practice counting backward from 10.<\/li>\n<li class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><b><\/b>Use positive <strong>self-talk<\/strong> (\u201cI can be patient\u201d \u201cI can wait\u201d).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><b>Think, turn, tell:<\/b>\u00a0What is something quiet Gerald could do while he waits that would not distract others?<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Here are some ideas:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li class=\"x_MsoListParagraphCxSpFirst\">Make up a story in your head. Make sure you give lots of details about the main character.<\/li>\n<li class=\"x_MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle\">If you have paper and crayons, draw a picture for a friend.<\/li>\n<li class=\"x_MsoListParagraphCxSpLast\">Count and sort your toys.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">When you have to wait and you are excited or impatient, it can be very hard. What can help you wait? Calming down. Using self-talk. Think about something else. Or do something that will not distract others.
