October 2016 – Ms Gourlay's Class

Month: October 2016

pumpkin

Division 7 was surprised to find out how many seeds were in our pumpkin.   We put the seeds in groups of ten and then counted them.  There were 588 seeds.  We know that the size of the pumpkin doesn’t mean that there are more seeds.  We learned that a pumpkin has more seeds if it has a lot of ribs, and it is a darker orange.  That means that the pumpkin has been growing longer.

Ms. Gourlay roasted the seeds and we ate them!  Delicious!

Do you know what is great about pumpkins?  Everything!  Division 7 learned that pumpkins are not vegetables.  They are a kind of fruit called a gourd.  We named our class pumpkin Penelope.  We weighed it, measured its height and circumference, counted its ribs and seeds, and found out whether it would sink or float in water.  Here we are hard at work.[metaslider id=2776]

We found out that our pumpkin was four times bigger around than it is high.

The children have been learning about the structural features of plants.  We know that the many fruits and vegetables that are grown on the farm have a life cycle.  It is now harvest time on the farm and all the crops are ripe and ready to be pick.  We loved picking our pumpkins right from the field!
