{"id":7924,"date":"2020-04-24T08:52:37","date_gmt":"2020-04-24T15:52:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/gaitensp\/?p=7924"},"modified":"2020-04-24T09:00:15","modified_gmt":"2020-04-24T16:00:15","slug":"were-only-particles-of-change-orbiting-around-the-sun","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/gaitensp\/2020\/04\/24\/were-only-particles-of-change-orbiting-around-the-sun\/","title":{"rendered":"We&#8217;re Only Particles of Change \/ Orbiting Around the Sun"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Morning.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7925\" src=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/gaitensp\/files\/2020\/04\/giphy-2-2.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"636\" height=\"356\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The dawn has risen on the final day of Joni-Fest.\u00a0 Prepare yourselves, young padawans, for all of your work has been building toward this moment&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><em>Vocab<\/em>:\u00a0 Hejira &#8211; &#8220;a journey, especially when undertaken to escape from a dangerous or undesirable situation&#8221; (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/hegira\">Merriam-Webster<\/a><\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>Hejira &#8211; &#8220;a flight or journey to a more desirable or congenial place,&#8221; or &#8220;escape with honor&#8221; (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/jonimitchell.com\/library\/view.cfm?id=3794\">Joni Mitchell<\/a><\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>Joni found the word &#8220;hejira&#8221; while reading the dictionary, and was drawn to the &#8220;dangling j, like in <strong><i><a title=\"Aja (album)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aja_(album)\">Aja<\/a><\/i><\/strong>&#8230; it&#8217;s leaving the dream, no blame.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Steps:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0<em> Outer Space<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>what do you need to do to prepare the space around you?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>2.\u00a0 <em>Inner Space<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>what do you need to do to prepare the space within you?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>3.\u00a0 This is an interpretive drawing.<\/p>\n<p>Think back to the art we created while listening to the &#8220;Prelude&#8221; and &#8220;Liebestod&#8221; from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=kzDXwDbUdtA\">Tristan und Isolde<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0 We&#8217;re going to do something similar here.<\/p>\n<p>Your job is to listen to the title track from Joni&#8217;s ground-breaking 1976 album <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hejira_(album)\">Hejira<\/a><\/strong> and to draw what you hear.<\/p>\n<p>There is no right or wrong: you can interpret the lyrics; you can interpret the music; you can draw what you see in the YouTube window, just images, images and words &#8211; totally up to you.<\/p>\n<p>Before you begin, though &#8211; have you <em>actually<\/em> done Steps 1 and 2 above?\u00a0 If not, please do so now.<\/p>\n<p>If you wish, you can read <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/jonimitchell.com\/music\/song.cfm?id=234\">the lyrics<\/a><\/strong> before you begin &#8211; this is not required.<\/p>\n<p>This album was mostly written during a road trip across the U.S. (disguised in a red wig and sunglasses and going by the aliases &#8220;Joan Black&#8221; and &#8220;Charlene Latimer&#8221;!) and is full of the kind of density of imagery and metaphor (and the layers of sound &#8211; &#8220;braided together . . . a sheet of sound,&#8221; as Joni said) that has made Mitchell famous &#8211; painting with words, as it were.\u00a0 It also is known for the deeply groovy bass-guitar work of Jaco Pastorius, who played a uniquely fretless bass.<\/p>\n<p>Deep breath.\u00a0 Do your best to allow what happens to happen.\u00a0 Go.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Joni Mitchell - Hejira\" width=\"584\" height=\"438\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5AfPR_B8s-A?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>4.\u00a0 Title: Joni Mitchell &#8211; &#8220;Hejira.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>5.\u00a0 Date it.<\/p>\n<p>6.
