“Oh Captain, my Captain” – the words of Walt Whitman delivered in Dead Poet’s Society sparked a fire in me that has never gone out. The idea that a teacher could be creative, compassionate, inspiring and kind all while maintaining a great sense of humour, changed everything for me. While obtaining degrees in both Education and Social Science through Simon Fraser University, I discovered that I learn best visually and experientially so those are my favourite ways to teach my students.
I have been the Program Teacher in K-Plus since 2018. Previous to K-Plus, I taught Humanities at Royal Oak Secondary Alternative Program for five years. Before Royal Oak, I worked with the Vancouver School District in a Special Remedial Classroom for students (grades 1-3) and in a Kindergarten class at a school on the DTES.
Before teaching I spent the better part of a decade working in Restorative Justice both in federal prisons and in the community. Restorative Justice is a philosophy about how people live together peacefully with mutual respect, dignity and care grounded in healthy ways to address conflict and repair harm. This philosophy is the foundation of my teaching.
The best part of K-Plus for me is being able to help my students learn to be kind, responsible and successful students while walking beside them on the first leg of their school journey.
Fun Facts About Me: I was born in South Africa and I have two furballs named Meatballs & Pancakes.
Hello K-Plus Families! My name is Ms. Tajiri and I have been a part of the Morley family since 2017. I am an Education Assistant (EA III) in the K-Plus Program.
