{"id":2245,"date":"2017-05-07T11:29:30","date_gmt":"2017-05-07T18:29:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/fischerj\/?p=2245"},"modified":"2017-05-07T11:29:30","modified_gmt":"2017-05-07T18:29:30","slug":"growth-mindset-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/fischerj\/2017\/05\/07\/growth-mindset-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Growth Mindset 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<em>Gaining awareness of how we view ourselves and the process of learning and thinking can change how we react to new challenges and life&#8217;s inevitable setbacks<\/em>&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/Mindset-Learning-Teaching-Traits-Independent\/dp\/0325062889\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1494179738&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=a+mindset+for+learning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">A Mindset For Learning<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>With this in mind we have started&nbsp;to identify the traits of a learner with a growth mindset. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>According to Mraz &amp; Hertz (Authors of <em>A Mindset For Learning<\/em>) these traits are defined as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Persistence<\/strong> &#8220;<em>you try and try again even when it feels hard<\/em>&#8220;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Empathy<\/strong> &#8220;<em>when you feel someone&#8217;s feelings in your own heart<\/em>&#8220;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Optimism<\/strong> &#8220;<em>when you do something new, you think &#8216;I can try,&#8217; and give it your best shot because that&#8217;s how you grow<\/em>&#8220;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Resilience<\/strong>&nbsp;&#8220;<em>when you have trouble, you bounce back and try again<\/em>&#8220;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Flexibility<\/strong>&nbsp;&#8220;<em>when one thing doesn&#8217;t work, you can try a different way<\/em>&#8220;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We began with <strong>persistence<\/strong> (like Maru the cat trying to swing!). &nbsp;After a group discussion sharing our personal experiences with learning skills that were &#8216;hard&#8217; (required lots of practice), we engaged in a writing activity:&nbsp;<strong>Then and Now.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here are some samples.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sd41blogs.ca\/fischerj\/2017\/05\/07\/growth-mindset-2\/attachment\/20170428075950042\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2246\">Persistence Writing<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then&nbsp;our group created our <strong>persistence<\/strong> poster! &nbsp;They said&nbsp;<em><strong>&#8220;persistence means we keep trying. We don&#8217;t give up.&#8221;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>We looked at&nbsp;<strong>empathy <\/strong>by reading<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8JwWvABsnDk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&nbsp;Hey Little Ant<\/a>&nbsp;by Hannah Hoose. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Our next&nbsp;poster group said <strong>&#8220;Empathy means we know how&nbsp;other people feel&#8221;.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Finally, over the past few weeks, we have been reading the Frog &amp; Toad stories by Arnold Lobel. &nbsp;Anyone who has ever read these stories&nbsp;knows that Frog is very &#8216;<span style=\"color: #339966;\">optimistic<\/span>&#8216; while Toad is rather &#8216;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">pessimistic<\/span>&#8216;. &nbsp;After reading the last story, we did a character comparison of&nbsp;Frog and Toad. &nbsp;We all decided that we would rather have Frog&#8217;s attitude of <strong>optimism<\/strong>! &nbsp;Our group discussion came up with a lot of &#8220;Frog-isms&#8221; (I can do it) and &#8220;Toad-isms&#8221; (Blah, I&#8217;ll never get it). &nbsp;(So when you hear negative talk, you can remind your child to be more like Frog than Toad!!)<\/p>\n<p>Our last group said &#8220;<strong><em>optimism means we think positively&#8221;.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Thanks to all our poster creators so far&#8230;you can check them out on our classroom windows!<\/p>\n<p>Watch this week as we define <strong>resilience<\/strong> and <strong>flexibility<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;Gaining awareness of how we view ourselves and the process of learning and thinking can change how we react to new challenges and life&#8217;s inevitable setbacks&#8221; (A Mindset For Learning).
