We have begun the work of preparing items for our Annual Art Show<\/strong><\/a>!<\/span>\u00a0 (Taking place this spring\u2026)\u00a0We are working on creating landscapes<\/span> this year. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0“Landscapes are works of art that feature scenes of nature: mountains, lakes, gardens, rivers, etc.”<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

We have been looking at a variety of pieces of landscape art\u00a0from the Burnaby Art Gallery<\/a> (B.A.G. in a Box-My Place<\/em>). \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We have discussed the characteristics<\/strong> of a ‘landscape<\/span>‘–places but no ‘recognizable’\u00a0people. \u00a0We then discussed how the artists used a\u00a0‘foreground<\/strong>‘, a ‘background<\/strong>‘, and a ‘focal point<\/strong>‘ or ‘emphasis<\/strong>‘ to draw the viewer’s eye. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We practiced finding the ‘emphasis<\/strong>‘ on a number of pieces of art. \u00a0Next, we used a framer’s tool<\/em> (a teeny tiny\u00a0empty picture frame)\u00a0to find a picture within another picture (we used calendar photos). \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We learned that by bringing the tool closer to our eyes it makes a larger view, while moving away from us gives a more close up\u00a0view of our subject.<\/span><\/p>\n

Finally after all that practice, we got to use the messy charcoal! \u00a0\"charcoal\"<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

It is thin and delicate and so easy to sketch with. \u00a0We made some fabulous landscapes today\u2026and I’m thinking that we might even turn some of them into cards to sell at the Art Show! \u00a0Simple but beautiful!<\/span><\/p>\n
