Learning for the last two months………

These paintings were done after we read the book by Ted Harrison-The Northern Alphabet.

We made penguins in conjunction with our study of the Arctic and Antarctic.

These are the Northern Lights.

We read the story of the Cherry Tree.  The children did a wash, then drew the trunk and added the blossoms.  Later each child tried to sequence the story into three parts.–a very difficult task.

The following slides show liquid measuring.

The children were very interested in learning about different whales.  Later they wanted to draw them.  Here they are!!

For Literacy Week, we focused on the Piggy and Elephant stories.

Recent Activities

We read a true story about the artist Van Gogh.  The idea of the story was to be true to oneself.

We have done many activities with our Buddies.  Making drawings on the computer, computer games, Jenga, and here doing puzzles, have been some of the activities we have done

For Remembrance Day, each child was asked what does ‘peace’ mean to them. The poppies are in the style of Georgia O’Keefe.

We also discussed Diwali.  A festival of light and peace.

We read and discussed two books about trees.  Then children then chose material to put on their own cutout tree.  On the paper the children copied words to express ideas about fall.

Using yogurt lids, we made a tree.  Beneath the tree was a saying, “Nothing to give, nothing to buy, except love, friendship and peace.”

Using kava blocks, two children made a person.

Some Activities We have Recently done…..

We have been learning about money.  To have learning’s be somewhat more meaningful, we made a print of the nickel.

Using two dice, the children placed a square around the numbers rolled and then read the number.

We have been learning about plants.  Using these items the children sorted into seeds and non seeds.

Using loose parts, students made butterflies.

This project took 4 days.  First egg carton parts were painted.  On the second day, caterpillar features were added.  Thirdly, the paper chosen by the children was folded and then made in to a butterfly shape.  The last step was to add details to each side of the butterfly’s wings.

This was the final result.  Every child made a butterfly booklet outlining the process from an egg to a butterfly.  In journals, the Grade Ones wrote a detailed process of how an egg became a butterfly.

Activities for the last two weeks

We continued to do measuring.  This time the students had to connect a picture to show the weight.

The children did a picture related to this cheery blossom tree.  This week, they will listen to the famous story, The Cheery Tree.  From here they will be asked to sequence the story.  The Kindergarten students will draw events and dictate their ideas to me.  The grade ones will draw parts of the story but will write their own ideas.

We have been focusing our our Earth and how to protect it.  Birds are an important part of the eco-system.  We will view a video on this topic and then write about it.

In our discussions about earth, we read several books.  One was about recycling.  Here each child had a choice to use a cleaned but old nylon to freely paint on.  This was a very popular activity!

Activities in the last little while

This is our art work for our poem.

These shamrocks involved texture making using different materials.

We are measuring using various items and later different kinds of scales.

This book was used to make a class book whereby everyone wrote and drew an animal that comes from an egg.

In twos the children examined parts of an egg.
